I thought that as well, but yesterday one of the commentators said that the Monaco Grand Prix usually coincides with a bank holiday, which is on the Friday each year. Besides, they can't open up the streets while the GP2 cars are running around!
I was thinking more in the days of Hill and Rindt and Brabham and Stewart ... you know, when there was no GP2. Or, at the very least, when all the cars raced together. Or the lesser formulae were run on the Thursday or Saturday after the practice sessions. Either way, I'm guessing the Firday GP2 race is only a recent thing; the tradition came before the race.

Back in the day I think the lack of Friday running was so that the Prince could enjoy Friday Lunch in peace. I suppose it's simply tradition now though.

Monaco, a personal favourite of mine, it has the most beautiful surroundings and the biggest challenge of the year. Let's hope it doesn't rain.

To be honest, i'm not looking forward to this race...

Huh? What happened in the 15 minutes between those 2 posts...

On topic: Is there anywhere on the track that KERS could actually be used? I can see long lines of traffic forming behind the McLarens now...

There is only 1-2 places where KERS could be used, the best would probably be coming out of Sainte Devot. But I highly doubt KERS will actually help Ferrari and McLaren make any passes.

If I had to hazard a guess, it's either a typo or the realisation that Ferrari aren't assued victory.

The tunnel, maybe. I think the Start/Finish straight is perhaps a little too short - I certainly can't see it being used off the line because by the time you get up to 100km/h, you're in the braking zone for Ste. Devote and there's nowhere to go around the others - and the run up Beau Rivage is perhaps too narrow. There's been some talk that people would use it to get out of slow corners faster, but we haven't seen that at all this year and I think it might generate too much wheelspin. KERS doesn't come with traction control, after all.

I've been watching the BBC highlights and the Renault Turbo of Alain Prost managed to overtake normally aspirated cars in the 1982 Monaco Grand Prix on the run up to Ste. Devote using whatever power advantage the Renault Turbo had over the Cosworth DFV and Alfa engine by that time to go from 4th to 2nd in the opening laps of the race. I don't think he had as big advantage as the 80 BHP KERS give at the moment.

Note the term "this" race. Any other time would be better, but i don't want to see my boys in red lose again to the boys in white and yellow. But then again, KERS will help with fast corner exit which would be the saviour at Monaco, so go Massa go!!!

Holy GOD the sound of that Brabham on the final straight

KERS isn't of much use, but a short second of boost out of key corners, and squeezing some 3-4s of boost out of St. Devote, is quite useful.

As for the turbo boost compared to KERS... I recently watched the 1982 South African GP - top stuff, with Prost falling a lap back after shredding a punctured tyre, then fighting back to win the race - and they explained that due to the height of the circuit (low air-pressure), the turbo cars have around 580HP (normal power-levels) and the regular cars 430 (about 70HP less than usual). No wonder Niki Lauda, driving a DFV-powered McLaren, said "I'm hoping to be 7th on the grid, fastest of our class".

It was "fit of pique". . Now I know what it means. :D

It's what the Renault guys call the bulged veins on Flavio's forehead every time Nelson does a Nelson. :D

I believe it's the opposite really, they can't have the city center closed three consecutive days.

The track takes two weeks to assemble. It's still blocked off on the Fridays.

 👍

Are you sure about this? I thought they would open the roads outside of the scheduled events (having a few "gates" to open in several places).

Something similar to Le Mans, where the practise and quali happen until thursday, public roads get open for regular traffic during friday and are closed again for the race (starting saturday).

The city is opened up on Friday night still, after the GP2, etc races have finished. At least this is what was said on BBC commentary for free practice.

Apparently, the Friday was normally a day of feasting and is usually a bank holiday but nowadays its just around for tradition (and for extra partying ;) )

especially for Raikkonen to drink away so he sucks the next day!!!

Hamilton has crashed out of Q1 after setting the fastest first sector time. Session red flagged and Hamilton will not be allowed to continue in qualifying (He's not hurt)

Qualifying is underway. Barrichello-Button-Vettel, but with eight minutes on the clock the session has been red-flagged because Hamilton just went arse-first into the wall at Mirabeau; apparently the suspension is damaged and the car has ben extracted via crane. He's currently seventh, with the likes of Kovalainen, Rosberg, Massa, Webber, Trulli and Glock all within half a second behind him, so this could go very badly for him.

Session due to restart soon.

right down to Buemi they are within a second of his time, and nobody has ran on the soft option yet, he will most likely drop a long way down the order.

edit - oops double. Times are dropping already further in Q1 , 1:15.0xx by Rosberg.

Both Toyotas dead last in Q1... What the heck?

Oh and both Force Indias got through! Screw Toyota, FI FTW!

fast and tight at the top, 5 guys in to the 1:14.xxx . The sector times make interesting reading too, quite a few of the top runners making their time at different places on the track.

I wish Legard would stop going on about Button. He's starting to sound like James Allen without the Senna comparisons.

Ferrari and McLaren really made great improvements, at least with low fuel. P1 and P2 is impressive!

EDIT: Hamilton's off reminded me James Hunt's.

Nothing like the "robots" we have today as F1 drivers. Then again, if something like this happened today he would get a fine equal to his year's salary

Another pole for Button despite appearing way off the pace for most of the session. Raikkonen P2, Barrichello third. Vettel breaks up the order with fourth, but Massa is right there in fifth. Then it goes Rosberg, Kovalainen, Webber, Alonso and Nakajima rounding out the top ten.

Toyota can build decent cars, but never versatile ones. They always have an Achilles Heel that sends them to the back at certain types of tracks - which ones precisely changes from year to year.

So much for loyalty, eh? :p

Yeah, he's so annoying. Him, and DC's ramblings on how KERS caused the Massa and Hamilton mistakes - Hamilton was way off line anyway, and Massa lost it before the braking zone...

And Button does it again! 👍

He came out of bloody nowhere. Faster in Q3 than in Q2, so god knows how many laps he's got to build a lead...
