Hey, I'm only going by the Autosport article. I guess Heidfeld and Kubica - both of whom were summoned - were cleared.

Five Formula 1 drivers were given penalties for not lifting off during a yellow-flag period in qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Championship leader Jenson Button, team-mate Rubens Barrichello, Renault driver Fernando Alonso, Force India's Adrian Sutil and Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi were given five-place grid penalties after the session.

The race stewards deemed the first four drivers had not lifted off sufficiently at the end of Q2, when Buemi had crashed, leaving debris on track.

Brawn team boss Ross Brawn said his drivers, who had not set a time until then, had not lifted at all.

"No, they swerved to avoid the problem. But they didn't lift off, no," said Brawn.

Swiss driver Buemi was also reprimanded by the stewards for driving back to the pits with a damaged car and impeding other drivers.

Button had qualified in seventh, Barrichello in fifth, Alonso in 12th, Sutil in fourth and Buemi in 10th.

I think it was pretty obvious. They'd have to have admitted it because the telemetry data would have shown them up.

It's a shame... It was a heroic effort to make it into Q3... gone to waste.

Okay... maybe slightly open... Vettel has to win all further races and hope Button doesn't finish higher than 9th... but this is good news for him.

WHOW!!! What a qualifying session it was!!! I am very surprised that most drivers crashed there... Unbelievable.. Anyway, that was exciting as hell!!!

I am curious that some drivers before the end of Q2, the yellow that was, 6 or 7 drivers didn't slow down for the yellow but obviously the one that I saw speeding there was Button on TV... Glock has a left leg injury and might not be able to race tomorrow... Congrats to Vettel for his pole... I'd say, after all the dissapointment for BMW this weekend, I think they have a good chance For tomorrow!!! This is going to be a hack of a race to date with yet!!!

What did surprise me whas the Glock crash were it happend...there is no reason at all to understeer off there in the dry...especially with the power the cars have today compaired to several years ago were the cars exited the chicane with much higher speed and much less downforce than today...seems like he lost his concentration there...perhaps because he has been very ill the last 2 days...!!


Very exiting quali to watch...and as been said here before,i also couldn't believe what Buemi did after he crashed,this could have resulted in a major accident and they where lucky it all went well...👎👎👎
A shame though,because Buemi whas doing so well....


Can't wait for tomorrows race,hopefully it will be a close fight...as this often doesn't happen at Suzuka because of the layout of the track...

I totally agree with you on this mate 👍

Basically, the cause of the crash was in fact due to the lack of experience for some drivers and lack of practice time as the second Friday practice session was a wet one for them...

It's a shame for Buemi and Toro Rosso to be honest... But I saw him impeded Heidfeld but that's owkey... Glock's crash simply because of misjudge of the edge of the track I believe. Or perhaps he got some other reason that we don't know... What ever happened, thankfully he's owkey and just a cut on his leg... Kovalainen crash is just like Buemi's first crash, driver's error...

I enjoy this track sooo much in GT4 and yet more interesting to watch F1 here!!! Bet this is going to be the GP of the year!!!

Yes and no.

Brawn did not have a time, but if they had left it be, they would have been 12th and 13th. Both Glock and Alguersuari failed to set a Q2 time as well, and as Button and Barrichello had both been faster than them in Q1, they would have been placed before them. If they had backed off and the other three got penalties, they'd have been best-off.

Well obviously Kovalainen has to change his gearbox because of that previous heavy rear-end shunt...

I heard that Kobayashi will stand by for the race... But as you guys may know that they can't change driver after the Saturday practice session but Toyota seems to be trying hard dealing with FIA to get Kobayashi into the seat for the race...

Glad that they've decided this all today - rather than waiting to find this out tomorrow morning (in Japan)

So - if Button and Barrichello had eased off - they would've been 12/13

The others would've dropped their 5 places and they would now be promoted 4 places - upto 8/9.

So - Button lost 3 places and Rubens didn't lose any (Going by the times - Button was quicker than Rubens in Q1&2 but not 3)

There's a few more hours til the race of course - time for more penalties!?

From my view, the car did turn right a bit and he didn't turn the wheel 90 degrees instead some like 45 degrees or so... That's from the onboard video... By looking from the camera on the straight, the car is pointing straight into the gravel and onto the wall... How can his steering column break???

From what I saw on the on-board camera it looked like he'd phased out a bit, maybe his illness caused a quick lapse of consciousness or concentration, and it was enough to slam him into the tire wall (which didn't look like it did it's job that well either)

Maybe... The tire wall didn't do it's job neatly because the wall is just too thin!! They need at least 2-3 layers of tire more...

Just watched it again... he didn't turn to 90 degrees until he was skipping across gravel and grass... by which time it was too late.

As stated - it looks like he lost concentration and didn't turn enough.

I was following the session on F1 Fanatic's live blog and someone suggested that Glock sneezed at the wrong moment. As insane as it sounds, it may just be right. He as sick yesterday and while he spiked a fever, it died down ... but colds like that don't come and go that quickly.
