No, what was the lollipop guy thinking? Sakon saw the lollipop go up and thought "that means go" and he went. Also, Alonso did a splendid out holding Button.
 
What will the stewards say about Hulkenberg juping the chicane three times?

When will Vettel pit?

The race is over. The home crowd is excited. Maybe that one guy a few pages back really is from the future!

I liked how as soon as Alonso got past Button right through to the end the BBC were saying Button's down on downforce 👎

Ferrari too good, easily won that race.
 
Vettel 4th? That can't be right? Surely he either must've made a stop right at the end or he will be penalized.
 
He pitted on the last lap, Bram. He still got out ahead of Robsberg and Webber.

Last I remembered he was over 2 seconds behind Webber, and Rosberg had quite a gap between himself and the Hulkenberg train. Either it's me, or Vettel found a new world of pace in those last laps :odd:
 
I'm just telling you what I saw live on TV. I saw him pit on the last lap and get out still in fourth.

Congratulations to Alonso, good on him :) He didn't back off from Button the whole race and his pit crew did a good job of getting him out faster too.

He was down from the start, so you can't really compare the laptimes as to whether it did make a difference. Ted Kravitz was just confirming information from Mclaren you silly fool, they only mentioned it that once. I don't think it will have gained him that much. Fernando damaged his own car slightly too, which meant more drag down the straights. I think Button taking a second longer in the pitlane than Alonso was the more a deciding factor. Once Alonso got ahead there was nothing Jenson could do, the race was Fernando's.

It may have been a different story if the Mclaren pit boys were a little faster, but all credit to Alonso for keeping the gap small so that when the pit stops came it allowed him to get ahead.

Good drive from Vettel too. He managed not to run anyone off the road too :eek:

Isn't it just amazing that Vettel's engine was fixed magically by Webber going past. It is impressive though to be able to go 52 laps on the soft tyre.

Good race from the front three. Alonso clearly was quicker than Button but I doubt he would have been able to pass had Button held on yo the lead during the pit stops.

I distinctly heard excuses from BBC once Alonso hit the lead. Button never had a chance.
 
Kudos to the Spaniard for bringing back a victory for Ferrari in their homeland, after 3 years!
 
Too bad Webber couldn't capitalise much from Hamilton's early retirement points wise - then again that was also down to his poor start. Surprised by Vettel's performance - it's also amazing that the soft tires lasted virtually the whole race distance!

No, Mclaren made the excuses and the BBC passed it on via Ted Kravitz. Alonso would still have jumped him in the pitstops because Alonso raced a perfect race apart from the start.

I do agree though, once Alonso got ahead it was game over for Button, he didn't have a chance of passing him.

But think about this:

Pit stop times:

Button: 22.955
Alonso: 22.154

They were wheel to wheel into turn 1. Are you telling me that the piece of diffuser that Button lost would not have gained him the 4-5 tenths (Over the course of 36 laps, which equates to around 0.014 seconds per lap :sly:) before the pit stops that would have enabled him to stay infront and likely go on to win the race?

The answer is, nobody knows. Alonso won, Button second. There was a reason that Alonso overtook Button; he drove faster. Lost downforce is a valid excuse for going slower, but it doesn't take anything away from Alonso's victory. Just like Vettel's engine problem doesn't take anything away from his victory at Bahrain, and how Massa's radio order didn't take anything away from his victory at Hockenheim (Oh wait... :p).

The driver's can't see what we see in those camera positions.
 
I was quite impressed at Vettel running 52 laps on options and doing the tyre equivalent of a splash'n'dash. They did well to rescue 4th and 6th from what didn't look like a great weekend for them.

I noticed the same thing and thought it was a bit tight, although DC or Brundle (can't remember who) commented briefly about Ratzenberger's death after the tape had finished.
 
Not too much to comment on in that race really. I knew Alonso would get past eventually because Button simply couldn't shake him. Pretty impressive drive from Vettel. Had he not had the engine trouble he could've been right with the top three after they pitted, but I think we know how that would've ended! It's good that Hamilton retired because the top five are right near each other again.

If you noticed, when he entered the pits there was a lot of smoke from the tyres.
