Very, very impressive times by Hamilton and Grosjean.

I'm very surprised that Schumacher is ahead of Rosberg. Shame that he lost three tenths to Hamilton in the last sector. In first and middle sector, he was only one and a half tenth behind.

EDIT: However, Hamilton's pole time is almost one and a half seconds behind Vettel's pole lap in 2011 and Vettel didn't even have KERS.

However, I'm not surprised that Vettel is "slow" this year. He was the one that took most advantage of EBD last year.

Holy crap, that was a great session! One of the best in the last few years, for sure! Let's hope the rest of the season can be this exciting! Great job to Hamilton for getting pole just ahead of his team mate. Fantastic effort for Grosjean too! It's a bit odd not to see the Red Bull cars right up the front there but it certainly is refreshing.

Very impressive.

Wonder if Mark has a proper head on his shoulders again.

I guess this will be a good opportunity for the man accused of being unable to overtake, to make a fist of it in what is not the car that is class of the field...

He has had his two minutes of fame, time to move aside.

/sarcasm.

Why Nico...why. I make you my underdog to do well since you joined Merc GP and you let me down with you're overdoing it.

Vettel's going to have to show us some mid field driving now. Interesting.

Well I think I can let Hamilton off the hook for his watch advert now.

Here's hoping we see an 8 lap Vettel/Raikonnen duel.

"Fernando, did you expect to have this pace in qualifying in the Ferrari"
"I'm 1 sec quicker then Felipe, I can say that that is something I am happy with".

This is it! Delighted for Schumi and whole Mercedes team. Excellent job guys. Superb Hamilton.

Red Bull? Yeah, of course, it's a good drink muahaha, no engine mapping, no exhaust blowing diff.

Ferrari? Ok Alonso was the only one trying I guess. Massa? No comment for that sucker. I recon this is the last season for this poor fella.

As we just saw, the McLaren boys are plotting to foil Grosjean's time in the sun. *shaking my head* he just doesn't know it yet, so sad.

Race 1 pecking order: Mclaren, Mercedes, Redbull. That's not a position Redbull have been used to for at least two years.

Lewis Hamilton is the man. McLaren seems to have really built a fighter this year.

Props to Grosjean for making it to 3rd on the grid.

Also- Lotus(Renault) and Merc look like they'll be giving Vettel a run for his money. Happy to see a change at the front of the field!

I figure I'll just keep watching Sky sports on the live stream since I never get any British television in the states (except for BBC America, of course)

That was the most exciting qualifying session I've ever watched, glad to see Mclaren have built a good car. But left with a bittersweet taste after JB failed to get pole.

If Webber had no KERS, and Vettel did, what does that tell us (Vettel's slower then Webber :))

The question is: will Lotus keep this up? Last year they started with a bang but then sloooooowly and painfully fell down.

Don't think so.

edit: Just checked and it's going to be sunny and dry.

This is Melbourne we're talking about, it's unofficial motto (at least for New South Welshmen) is "Four seasons in one day", so you can never really know what the weather's going to be like :D

No it's not. :sly:

That's an opinion! Off to the Opinions forum with it!

I think the heroes of this session are Button and Webber, for coming close to their team-mates (and, in Webber's case, doing better), Schumacher, for keeping his cool, Alonso for managing to make a pig fly while Massa was floundering, and... who's this Romain guy? Never heard of him. :sly: Great return for Grosjean!

Of course... the other man of the hour... Lewis Hamilton. Vindication. Domination. Could this season be the long awaited second championship for him?

Given that McLaren have consistently shown the ability to stay ahead of the curve in race-to-race development... I wouldn't bet against it. Red Bull have a hell of a lot of work to do if they're going to catch up by the next race.

EDIT: If KERS was out... then... could RBR actually be on pace? (Hopefully) I hope they sort it out.

I was thinking the same thing, but Grosjean looks suprisingly good.

Vettel in SIXTH!!! haha!

last year renault fell down becuase they were not making any drastical changes (dont forget they had front exhaust exit which was disaster)

of course good one from grosjean, shame for kimi but I think he'll make it better tomorrow

No KERS for Red Bull then... wonder if they'll have it functional tomorrow? This is looking great, competitive among a number of drivers at the top. McLaren looks strong though.
