Annoyed that Button couldn't shoot ahead of Hamilton. He must have had a mistake. I don't know if anyone else caught it, but at one point in his final flying lap, he was 4 tenths up on Hamilton's lap.

Doesn't necessarily mean that Button made a mistake. Hamilton's lap was golden. His last sector must have been fantastic. But still, I don't think either of them will complain too much; they're both on the front row so both have a clear track ahead.

No he wasnt, was about a hundredth off at the second sector mark then lost a tenth during the final sector.

I don't remember at what point he was up on Hamilton, but it was the middle sector where Lewis hasn't been fastest. So, if it was at the end of sector two that Button was faster, the difference might have come from the final sector, as Lewis was fastest in sectors one and three, at least as of near the end of the day.

Regardless, I'm not surprised by Hamilton outqualifying Button. Lewis typically does. Looking at the qualifying spots from 2011:
Australia - Lewis 2, Jenson 4
Malaysia - Lewis 2, Jenson 4
China - Jenson 2, Lewis 3
Turkey - Lewis 4, Jenson 6
Spain - Lewis 3, Jenson 5
Monaco - Jenson 2, Lewis 9
Canada - Lewis 5, Jenson 7
Europe - Lewis 3, Jenson 6
Britain - Lewis 5, Jenson 10
Germany - Lewis 2, Jenson 7
Hungary - Lewis 2, Jenson 3
Belgium - Lewis 2, Jenson 13
Italy - Lewis 2, Jenson 3
Singapore - Jenson 3, Lewis 4
Japan - Jenson 2, Lewis 3
Korea - Lewis 1, Jenson 3
India - Lewis 2, Jenson 5
Abu Dhabi - Lewis 2, Jenson 3
Brazil - Jenson 3, Lewis 4

Lewis outqualified Jenson for fourteen out of nineteen races, or 74% of them. There's really not much supporting expectations of Button outqualifying Lewis on any given race weekend, at least statistically speaking.

I think I'm going to watch the BBC pre-shows and watch the races on sky, the qualifying preshow on sky wasn't well done, a bit disjointed and random (none of the awesome production quality the BBC had) and then its also broken up with fairly long ad breaks every 10-15mins or so which doesnt exactly help things.

I think its unlikely that we will get what we had the last 3 years in terms of production, regardless of where we watch it.

This year for me has been a massive ammount of excitement about the season (especially now with RB not being dominant), along with almost the same disapointment in losing what we had last year in terms of coverage.

I'm not surprised at all with Hamilton beating Button to the pole, nothing new there. Button has never been a pole position qualifier, he just makes up for it in the race, a bit like Schumacher in this career.

In the British Grand Prix, Jenson out-qualified Lewis, he was 5th while Lewis was 10th.

I may do the same, will make a decision depending on how the pre race build up is tomorrow and next week. I'm a big fan of Jake, DC and Eddie but for me an F1 race just isn't complete without Martin Brundle in the commentators box.

Heikki taking his new helmet far too seriously!

I felt the same but i have to say Ben Edwards was excellent on BTCC duties and he was just as good this morning on qualifying.
I like DC but my ideal commentator combo would be Ben Edwards & Martin Brundle.

I really don't see what's so great about Ben Edwards. Never, ever liked his commentary and he has soured my watching of the BTCC for a number of years.

I had Walker and Brundle when I first started watching Formula One and that's still my favourite commentary duo whom I actually listened to, beaten overall retrospectively by Walker and Hunt.

Croft and Brundle did alright together. Sounds promising.

Well if i could count Murray Walker i would but there's no way he's coming back now, didn't hear much of Walker and Hunt as lived in a different country at the time.

Seems Ben Edwards is hit and miss, people either love him or hate him, personally i like him and definally the right choice by the BBC ahead of james allan/legard etc.

Agree completely. After fully enjoying Sky's coverage, which is imo worth every penny, i thought i'd have a quick look at BBC's highlights. It was HIDEOUS! Pre show was too long for the overal length of the show, and pretty rubbish to be honest. Commentary was bad from Ben, usual stuff from DC mind which was good:) Also, i think the beeb forgot there was a red flag...

Brilliant from Grosjean, looks like a classic driver in the making. Good to see someone really enjoying himself.

A nice surprise is all I can say. 👍 Grosjean's smile can't get any bigger!

I have to echo the comments that the BBC highlights seemed too disjointed and there was too much time spent on meaningless chatter. Get rid of Jake Humphrey and just have DC, EJ and Gary Anderson do the talking. I don't care for rubbish interviews with Button. If we're going to waste valuable highlights time, at least use it explaining the new cars or something actually interesting and insightful.
But, Ben Edwards and DC seemed to gel pretty well in commentary and I've always been a Ben Edwards fan - so I'm looking forward to when the BBC show something live.

But I think I will attempt to wake up early and watch the race through other means tomorrow rather than rely on this dodgy edited highlights.

Shame the HRT's couldn't make the race, hopefully they sort things out for Malaysia.

Don't feel like recording this, I have a feeling it's going to be a good one. I'm getting up early on a sunday!

Very exciting qualification session!

F1 stock watch.

"going up":

- Grosjean - what a result with great driving, shame the tv coverage here didn't show much of his final lap
- Maldonaldo - very nice showing , if Hugo Chavez had twitter I bet he would write "I happy #petrodollarsinf1"
- Hulkenberg - spanking Di Resta in his first GP quali? impressive.
- Torro Rosso Kids - Sebastien , Jaime Who?

"going down":

- Kimi - spinning in your 2nd debut? it's no WRC Iceman!
- Ferrari and especially Massa - Massa's performance doesn't surprise me because he is Massa but Ferrari overall looks like a car very difficult to drive and even more difficult to look at.
- Caterham - getting closer to mid pack doesn't look so good now and I think we're few weeks away from Mike Gascoyne CV popping out on linkedin.com

Jury is out on Mercedes due to their hocus pocus with DRS.

It looks like we'll have a very interesting first GP of 2012 season tomorrow.

What I can see so far is:
-Schuamcher is back to his 2006 form
-McLaren are back to their 2007 form
-Hamilton is back to his 2008 form
-Ferrari are even worse than their 2009 form
-Webber, Caterham, Lotus and Williams are back to their 2010 form
-HRT are back to their 2011 form

What a start to the year!

It's one qualifying session. I wouldn't go making assumptions like that about Schumacher and Webber.

We will see at about 8AM GMT tomorrow who is where. :D

My alarm is set for tomorrow, another early morning. *sigh* At least the race should be good. Now we can see if Vettel can put in a good drive in a sub-par car. Anyone can be good in a great car, but great drivers are often determined by their performance in a bad car...

Lets see if my (and a lot of other peoples) theory that Vettel isn't really that great comes into effect.

I find it funny how everyone says Hamilton is moody and stuff. Hamilton has had poor (ish) cars for 3 years now, and Vettel has a bad car for one afternoon and he has a bigger bottom lip than a toddler who has just had his blanket taken away.

Too late for that, he's now no longer really anything to do with the F1 team and has other duties on the car manufacture and consultancy side of things.

Watched only the last 20 minutes of qualifying on Sky, but I noticed 2 things.

David Croft gets very excited.
Damon Hill talks with his hands, a lot, even above shoulder height.

I like Damon Hill just for the entertainment value. Standing there looking vacant, looking left and right, looking up to the sky, anywhere except the camera, while trying to think of something to say.

If anyone thinks the BBC highlights were bad, Sky Go qualifying highlights are a massive 9 mins long. They highlighted the red flag though.

Yeah I notice that a lot too, but didn't realise the hand talking till he was nearly hitting himself in the head with his mic.

He doesn't seem too bad, Damon. He was always reasonably interesting on the mic as a driver.

4/1 for button to win, nice price, and 9/4 for red bull in the constructors. Heard they had a problem with their kers. Is it just an overreaction to their poor qualifying today. What happened? Missed it myself but with adrian newey in their team I would never rule them out.

This.

"And we can see Button is out and he is slow, that's right, much slower in sector two! Could this be Hamilton's day! Or is it because he is on his outlap!?"

David Croft probably gets excited because he did radio commentary before now. It was down to him to make it sound interesting.

Brundle is as solid as ever.

At least Croft made a better move to TV than Leggard. That guy was awful.
