Finally, a Uruguayan with some integrity...

Uruguay legend Ghiggia has criticized Suarez for his behaviour. Meanwhile the Uruguayan president thinks that allowing players to be sanctioned using TV footage as evidence is not right, while in the same breath saying that he didn't see Suarez bite anyone. No matter that the FIFA regulations clearly state that players can be sanctioned if evidence of a serious infraction comes to light after initially escaping the attention of the match officials.

When the flippin' president can't even show some respect for the rules of the game, you know there's a serious problem. I find the whole 'closing ranks' around Suarez absolutely despicable. All the more reason then to applaud Ghiggia for his comments this evening.

And I think he is the only one...

I can't believe that some people are elevating Suárez to a martyr status... (and when I say people, I mean almost all Uruguay)...

You CAN'T defend nor ignore what he did. Doing that is just plain stupidity. Period.

And meanwhile, Mertens misses the sitter of the tournament thus far.

Even my mate Malc could have scored that. And that's really saying something. Three years of 5-a-side and he never scored a single goal in the opponent's net. To this day, his tally remains an incredible -2  (Two OGs, no other goals). There can't be many people who have ever played the game that have a record like that!

Got in from work from another late shift (been doing all lates last two weeks so I have missed a bit of the football), Ghana lost just as I predicted, haven't seen the games but it seems it wasn't good enough by Portugal this year...

Belgium's Defour gets a straight red for a reckless stamp/studs up challenge, South Korea 0-0 Belgium and Algeria 0-1 Russia at the break..

Anyone??

Akinfeev, WAT ARE U DOIN??????

Akinfeev... STAHP !!!!

I told you.
Belgium only play for the last 20 minutes of a match.
So, for you Americans out there, imagine Tim Tebow circa 2011 and you're there.

Well, Divock Origi I think plays the role of Tebow at any rate. He's superb once he comes on for those last minutes.
And Belgium are the Broncos in this case. Which means they'll be up there with the best in a few years.
But unlike the Broncos, I don't particularly support them. Just Januzaj. (He's like football's Jameis Winston.)

A better way to visualize it is to watch the match.

Why watch the Belgium match when Algeria - Russia is the one that matters?

Me and my dad are not gambling men, but during the WC we have been partaking in small bets as it is a big competition.

So today, we put 2 accumulators on without knowing what each other had, we checked against each other's bets:

Me - Portugal Him - Portugal
Me - Germany Him - Germany
Me - Belgium Him - Belgium
Me - Algeria Him - Russia

All correct of course except the last one where both of us lost.

That is why we are not betting people.

Belgium won?
To be fair, they have pulled off a minor miracle by getting 9 points the way they did.
They'll probably repeat the trick against Usa. But Argentina will not come so easily...

They are just overrated, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't go through. They have some real talent there but it's just that, cocky players "we're the youngest and the best here! Kiss my behind!"

But they won 1-0 right?

Look at their group. Even before the WC everyone knew Belgium would ace this without problems. They however did not live up to the expectations. I give the USA a good chance against them.

Not in terms of the group. In terms of how they played.

Such an ignorant post. People saying Belgium is overrated are the same people who think that individual talent is guaranteed a talent as a team. Please show me where they ever went to Brazil with the mindset that they "are the best".

They went to Brazil with the goal to advance from the groupstage. Anything better than that would be a bonus. They've achieved their goal, so I don't see why you keep trashtalking them? I would've hoped Portugal to advance and lose to Belgium, just to pass you the can of salt.

Well written, I smelled some Portuguese jealousy a few replies back.

Again they pulled it off in the last 10 minutes, with one man down (correct red card) the game agaist USA will be interesting.

Who got the red card?

Defour. And rightly so. Only God knows what the hell he was thinking.

It was for a studs up challenge that turned into a stamp....

...Well done to Algeria, looked so happy at full time, delighted for them 👍

No football tomorrow, last 16 starts Saturday, here is the Schedule for it...

Saturday
Brazil v Chile
Colombia v Uruguay

Sunday
Holland v Mexico
Costa Rica v Greece

Monday
France v Nigeria
Germany v Algeria

Tuesday
Argentina v Switzerland
Belgium v USA

Quarter finals start July 4th..

I officially have a Weekend.

Well, I've taken a bet with a mate that the Argies wont make the final and a second one that Germany will win the tourny.

I like my odds.

Out of that list, I'd say Colombia v Uruguay is the hardest nut to crack.

I can't call Brazil v Chile.

These memes haven't gotten old yet, right?

I reckon the group winners should all take victories, but this is the 2014 World Cup so who knows.
One thing though, I am scared for the Netherlands-Mexico game. I really want the Dutch to go far and the Mexicans are their biggest obstacle yet...

I said that because they only played ten minutes of every single game. They were strugling to get results and in the last ten minutes of every single they had to fasten their pace to get somewhere. If Algeria mounted an offensive team like they did against Russia or Korea I couldn't see Belgium win. Don't get me wrong I had huge hopes for Belgium and they were one of my favourites teams there, but I saw one qualifying game they played so badly that started to have my doubts. And guess what they continued playing the same way. I didn't see this last game, but the others were both, bad decisicons by the coach or players that weren't giving the game what they were supposed to. And yes, I think great players should give a great team, apparently I'm wrong, so there is no point of having teams like Real Madrid or Barcelona and so forth.

Of every reason this isn't jelously whatsoever. I knew Portugal wouldn't go through in the first place. I never hoped them to play against Belgium and I would have hoped that Portugal lost because, I think, of all the teams, the cockiest is indeed Portugal.

I compliment teams when I have to and trashtalk teams when I have to. But this time Belgium didn't live up with peoples' expectations and playind ten or twenty or whatever minutes of every game to win, just doesn't make sense. If a team wants to win they just have to run more than the opponent. Belgium never did that, but they would always get away with small margin results. (Algeria result aside because they turned around the result, but then in the last 25 minutes of the game). Sorry, if I offended you but that's how see Belgium right now. And if USA keeps playing the way they are, I belive your Belgium to be defeated unless they play the full 90 minutes.

Well, I missed the last two days due to GWFOS, but it seems I've got 26 results right (54%), but only half the 2nd round teams. Looks like I shall have to recalculate the knockout phase predictions then.

Also a-hahahaha at Suarez's penalty and sponsors starting to drop him - though as @Touring Mars says, with the fact he's done this twice already, it's looking like it's not really sufficient enough.

Did anyone see the laser pointer put into Akinfeev's eyes right before Algeria scored their goal?

Aren't those green ones powerful enough to damage eyes?

Either an Algerian supporter was playing silly buggers, or an undergraduate was giving a presentation in a nearby university.
