Do they have to change tires in sets?

Since it was pretty much a lap they could have just replaced the bad one with no ill effects.

Regarding wheel nuts.

Do the FIA rules say the wheels have to be fixed with a wheel nut?

The Cars could use magnets to hold the wheels.
 
A 10 second stop-go won't do much to further ruin his race as it stands. Very poor end to the race for Ric.
 
And now a 10 second penalty.

They should have just parked him after the goof up in the pits.

10 second stop/go pen for Ric, unsafe release, it never rains but it pours....

I wouldn't bet on that, the teams will always put the minimum fuel they can in, and ask the drivers to save a bit :(

Are you new to F1? They weren't lifting and coasting from lap 1 in the past. These new fuel limits are too much IMO. Last year it was all about tyres, this year and beyond it's all about fuel. I'm positive the BTCC races will be much better entertainment later on.

The wheels are heavy, they'd need a lot of magnets to hold one on. Magnets aren't light either.

Still, at least they didn't hurt anyone this time...
 
And magnets wouldn't be guaranteed to hold the tires through the G-force loads.
 
I don't know much about current magnet technology but could they really hold 1000lbs of car at 4Gs?

If a driver can't score any points for the race, why even finish? Why don't they just save the engine?

Been watching it for years, it is more this season because the new fuel regulations but in the middle part of the race the only time they wern't lifting and coasting was when they were allowed to refuel and had indestructible tyres and were only stopping to change tyre because they had to :lol:
 
Hulkenberg/Force India are one mistake by Mercedes/Red Bull away from a podium, and the Caterhams are in 13th and 14th, which would be their best result at this track.

I think it's in the rules that unless a failure in the engine etc you have to stay out. Otherwise any of the top runners below 10th in that race would just stop and we'd finish with like 14 runners every race.

I don't think it is to do with regulations, more to do with sponsor money :D
 
If the results stay like this Hamilton will move up to 2nd in the standings despite not scoring in Australia 18 points behind his teammate.
