Someone should say Kyiat that Ferrari car is not Crimea!

One a more serious note I think it's just a race accident. Alonso was on cold tyres, Kiyat a little bit too agressive on these conditions but crash happens in F1. They didn't do on purpose, no one should be penalized.

I could almost understand it if it had a direct influence on what happened to Ricciardos qualifying but it didn't.

Also that. I guess he's sick of it happening and figured going to the stewards (assuming it was his final call) may be the best way to stop it.

I blame Ricciardo himself, why can't he just back off and find himself a space, and the penalty is unnecessary too..

Ricciardo's learning to cry pretty quickly overthere.
I don't think it's that. I think he's genuinely annoyed with Bottas. It would appear there is a history of this between them. That said, I'm not sure how well founded his quarrel with Bottas is, since Bottas' move to F1 is the first I've seen of him and I'm not aware of anyone else saying anything about him blocking other drivers. I haven't seen him frequently or noticeably blocking anyone and I really don't think he was to blame for anything on this occasion.

I thought Ricciardo was the one to blame here.

So pretty much everyone was playing drama queen around the whole "RBR-lack-of-pace" thing during the winter. I'm seeing both Red Bulls up where they should be. Only Mercedes really is looking incredibly strong. It'll be interesting to see if they can keep up this pace throughout the whole season or whether they will be their old self and gradually lose pace to the others as the seasons progresses.

I recorded the quali, but since the delay was SO long NBC had to run wayyy over and obviously I didn't get to see Q2 or Q3 :( .

I usually take stuff like this in to consideration so I never have it end the recording right at the scheduled time, but this one really slip by me. Guess I gotta extend that buffer for now on so I can avoid stuff like this.

their race pace (RBR) is still yet to be proven to be fast. (In the dry atleast)

I think RBR will have a great chance if it's just as wet tomorrow. For starters, they probably won't use their fuel so quickly. :sly:

Enjoyed quali, looking forward to getting up to watch the race....at least its a bit later than Australia!

What's the weather like for the race?

Odd. Mine recorded for like 2.5 hours.

It pretty much rains without fail at the same time every day the whole last week, late afternoon, right around the time both quali and the race starts. So yeah, it's very likely to start wet or get a downpour in the first hour of the race.

My Fantasy is built around a rain race

My Fantasy is built around a rain race

Rain races are good but the problem with Malaysia is that when it rains, it really rains, as seen yesterday. It dried out quickly but there is no way F1 cars could race in the conditions the first safety car lap did, with the huge rivers across the road. Just like 2009, and the drivers all agreed back then as well.

So if it does rain, we have to hope somehow it's not too heavy. Otherwise we'll just have red flags again.

Also @GTPorsche how in the name of all that's holy would Vettel be able to get a Caterham (or one of the other back markers, Marussia perhaps) to the front row if he couldn't even take pole in his Red Bull?!? Use common sense please.
Lol... ok.

Let's just pretend that the STR from 2008 wasn't a backmarker, and they had the perfect setup for the predicted weather when the other teams didn't. Take Vettel out of that car, and it's backmarker at best. Vettel was getting top 10s while Bourdais was barely getting to 15th.

Here's some stats for you @GTPorsche, over the 2008 season Vettel's average finishing position was 7th.
Even if you look at Bourdais who as we know didn't really cut the mustard in a Formula 1 car, his average result was 12th. So even in the hands of a sub-par driver it was in the mid pack.

There were 20 drivers on the grid in 2008, Bourdais as I said averaged 12th over the season. You do the math. I'm really mystified as to what you would class a back marker. The numbers don't lie

Also Bourdais finished below 15th four times in FOURTEEN races, so I don't know where you got that from. His results were 7th, 15th, 13th, 17th, 11th, 12th, 18th, 10th, 7th, 18th, 12th, 10th, 13th, and 14th in the races he finished.

Even if you ignore the above answer me this. Do you truly believe Vettel would have taken the Caterham, the very definition of a back marker, to the front row in todays conditions when he couldn't even get his Red Bull on Pole?

I'm surprised Vettel didn't have more to say about Rosberg at the end of Q3. But I think he knew he would have a hard time proving he was blocked, given that he clearly chose to back out further after he was passed. Which was a strange move, because it would have limited his top speed on the straight and compromised his lap time.

Red Flags 👎

It's easy to see why they're up there, and it has nothing to do with people misjudging their winter woes. The car still has issues with the power unit and though they are fixing them quite fast, the car still had the best down force package next to MGP it was power that they couldn't get. In these conditions you don't need that much power to be quick and when you have a ton of downforce epecially better than most rival teams, your bound to shine and grab places you wouldn't in dry conditions. Williams are as strong if not stronger than RBR, Ferrari were second fastest during the dry with McLaren right there and Williams not to far back. So it's no surprise they get beat by RBR when the rain hits.

Next week, RBR wont have such weather issues to cling to, unless a witch doctor is on their team payroll and specializes in conjuring up instant rain storms.

The facts don't lie, RBR are still way down on straight line performance and that shows in Malaysia, quick in the middle sector with the downforce dependent corners, slow on the first and last sector which is mostly about straight line power. It's only Newey's once again excellent downforce package getting them up there and in race format they're going to get mugged on the straights, in a dry situation.

The car was good, everyone knew that, the power unit and related technology was the issue. They still have a lot of work to do, or rather Renault do.

Renault have been down on top end power and still they use the same amount of fuel. Hmmm. Mapping has a lot to do with it I guess.
Yet Newey and co are able to give the drivers a package that gets in and out of the corners well enough to keep the rest at bay.
There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Same here, we have BBC iplayer as a backup but I prefer to record live TV at high bitrate.

iplayer was pretty slow though today, quali took around 12 hours to appear. Usually it's up there after a few hours. I couldn't avoid seeing Hamilton news for that long so BBC slackness spolled quali for me.

I hope adding two extra hours recording will get all the race.

Interesting to see Red Bull up there. I was skeptical about all the disarray news although we still need to see a dry weekend. Newey was talking in the delay, saying how its now an engine formula.
