Ik but im getting tired of all the hype over him in tomorrow's race.

Sure he won the triple crown but for the love of god don't treat him he's the only important competidor there

What loss of power? They are turbos so unless they can't adjust boost to compensate they should have the same power but 20% less air to push through therefore more speed.

They boost is regulated though, 3.5 bar is what they run it may be lowered in a race for save fuel but the main talk of this gp from the paddock has been about power loss due to less/thinner air. I'm just questioning based on what the technical perspective from F1 have actually said.

How did they end up with a kink on the main straight? I thought it was, well, straight.

It was, but they had to put runoff on the exit of Nigel Mansell turn, and moved the pitlane and stuff 15 metres in. The end of the straight is still in the same place, so it leaves a kink in the middle that's only noticable with the camera angles.
 
That was some entertaining practice...lots of sliding around :). Rain or no rain, I hope the track stays nice and slippery all the way through Sunday.

The more I watch cars on the circuit, the more I like it. I think the overall atmosphere around the track is fantastic. From many of the camera angles, especially the front straight, I feel like I'm watching a race from the 80s or 90s...and I mean that in a good way.

The track does seem more narrow than I though it would be. Too early to say good or bad, but hopefully it doesn't limit overtaking. I think they would do well to widen the road through turns 1, 2, & 3. Same thing with the final stadium section. It looks really narrow in there.

I like the esses section, but I think they should have kept 1 or 2 more of the corners. It's over and done with so quickly. Overall it looks pretty good though.

The Mansel Curve is pretty awesome too. Looks awesome watching the drivers struggle to get the power down. That said, every time they show the sort of overhead view that leads on to the straight, a part of me can't help but think about how amazing the old Peraltada was. Maybe if they could find a way to round off T16 a little, to increase the apex speed, it would turn that whole final right hander into a Parabola-esque curve.

The crowd is pretty cool too. It's weird hearing the crowd over the cars...it's weird hearing the tires :lol: I can't wait to see the crowd on Sunday. I usually don't cheer for any driver in particular, but I don't think I've ever wanted to see someone on the podium more than I'd love to see Checo up there, just to see the crowd lose its bloody mind!

That's the best think about the current generation of engines - there's so much texture to the sound. I've got a review of the 2004 season on at the moment, and the sound is only really tolerable in short bursts. Now you can hear the tyres squeal and the turbo firing up and the cars hitting the rumble strips.

Mexico has the sane atmosphere as Melbourne did last year - when Ricciardo took provisional pole, the crowd went nuts, and you could hear it; and to me, that's what Formula One should be about: the atmosphere, not the sound.

I agree that the quieter sound of the new engines is a good thing.

I went to the race in Montreal in 2004. I can't lie, the cars sounded unbelievable! I'll never forget standing near the fence along the back straight, it shook every bone in your body as the cars went screaming past. The novelty wore off though. My seat was near the exit of the hairpin, and by the end of the weekend, I couldn't hear a damn thing. I even went and found some earplugs at one point.

The funny thing is, there was a historic GP as one of the support races. Most of those cars were parked and did their start up directly behind the grandstand I was in. Both during theirs start ups, and while on the track, I don't remember the old cars being as loud as the then current cars. The old ones sounded amazing, but they didn't have that ear piercing tone that the V10s did.

After watching the re-runs of FP1 and FP2, I have to say that the stadium could be better. I don't buy the argument that the hairpin is necessary because of the limited run-off; the approach is pretty quick and there isn't much run-off as is. Rather, it feels like it was designed to keep the cars in view for as long as possible, and the end result will likely be slow and single-file.

Fortunately, it shouldn't be hard to change. The entire baseball field has been paved over, and from the aerial shots, it doesn't appear to have been re-done for the sake of the new layout. It wouldn't be too hard to extend the straight on approach to Turn 12 by a few metres to tighten the corner a bit, then replace the stadium section with a sweeper. The apex of the corner leading into the Peraltada could probably be brought forward a bit if the bridge is removed to allow the drivers to carry a bit more speed into it, but it would mean shortening the pit entry.
 
Having tried the new track in rFactor today, and comparing it to the old one, I must say the changes to the esses are actually not that bad. It's a shame they reduced the number from 7 to 5 though.

The hairpin in the stadium as prisonermonkeys said is certainly the worst part. The initial right turn is quite fun, and the final right is very tricky, but the hairpin slows you down to a crawl. It reminds me a lot of Indy road course's old mickey mouse section. Certainly it's more for spectator rather than safety purposes.

IMO, the old triple 90 degree right-left-right is better. Even better still (I think someone suggested this earlier) just put a bus stop chicane before the Peraltada and keep the whole turn.

Kinda. No word on if the team will be renamed Aston Martin Racing yet, but there is an "engine partnership" there.

I think I'd rather see the team stay as Force India. Maybe adopt the Aston Martin name like Red Bull did with Infiniti, but not a complete re-branding. To my mind, Force India really embody the spirit of the privateer that we haven't really seen since Minardi. They're the ones who are most likely to try something different with their strategy, they're the ones who punch above their weight the most consistently, and of all the midfield teams, they seem to be the ones who put the most stock in driver ability. Compared to that, you've got Williams, who are pretty boring; Sauber, who have been mired in a messy history; Lotus, who have struggled with mismanagement, poor finances and the absurd and cynical marketing row over their name; and Red Bull and Toro Rosso, who are an extension of a global empire.

Aston Martin might be a nice name to have on the grid, but they aren't essential to the sport. It's not some great injustice that they are absent, and I would much prefer a revival of Minardi or Brabham. Their history is pretty limited, and I don't think that completely rebadging a team like Force India is really worth it. I would rather a team have their own name and their own history, rather than appropriate somebody else's for the sake of a marketing boost.

Also, a blue and gold livery? Come on, guys, show some originality - Red Bull, Toro Rosso and Sauber all have variations on that theme.

That was me. And there's not much space for it, and it would rob the spectators in the stadium. Besides, the Peraltada looks to be completely flat these days.

I think the point of the hairpins is to extend the time that the spectators in the stands can see the cars. I still don't really like it, but the kerbs they've got are cool. Nice rounded things that raise the cars or make them bottom out like Alonso did. There appears to be a nice line of skids on the exit kerb of turn 15 though.

But we should reserve proper judgement until after the race.
