Would Road America work if they installed safer barriers where concrete is and put tec pros in the runoff areas?
It would need more than that.
-runoff at T1 would need to be expanded, not too difficult though.
-the whole T3 area would need to be opened up. Forrest pushed back near the entry
-in a F1 car, T5 would be very quick as well, and would need a much bigger run off.
-run off at Canada Corner would need to be pushed way back, which means moving a hillside.
I think the biggest and maybe only problem would be The Kink and if the FIA really would have a problem with it they could just install a chicane right in front of it to slow the cars down. Just like they did it with the Tamburello corner at San Marino.
There already is a chicane before the kink, off to the left hand side of the track.
The "problems" with the Kink are:
-curb left of the entry is quite agressive. Would need to be flattened out, probably paved behind it.
-apex curb is aggressive, and has a massive ditch behind it from years of people dropping tires. Would need to be paved and curb lowered.
-the wall behind the apex is very close, it would need to be pushed back, which involves moving a lot of dirt.
-and then there's the exit. Again, aggressive curb with an even bigger ditch, and a concrete wall 15ft away. You would have to push the wall waaaay back, which involves removing a huge chunk of forest (which may or may not be an issue)
-lastly is the isolation of the corner. It's pretty remote back there, with not much in terms of response facilities. That could be fixed without changing the track though.
I think for it to work, The Kink would basically have to look like a mirror image of 130R at Suzuka...which actually isn't that terrible of an idea.
Now, I don't think RA necessarily needs all of those changes, and it would be a shame to drastically change the track for F1...but those are the minimum changes the FIA would want, plus massive upgrades to pit and spectator facilities.
