If the medical helicopter was unable to fly, absolutely. But otherwise it isn't comparable unless there's tractors on the circuit.

Speaking of tractors reminds me of how lucky everyone was in the 2007 European Grand Prix...

Why? Because you're afraid of melting? F1 learned from Suzuka. These guys can race in the rain. They made a good call by holding qualifying off.
 
Things can really only get better from here. The torrential conditions are a by-product of Hurricane Patricia, which made landfall late yesterday, and I believe that the eye has already started to break up. The circuit is right on the periphery of Patricia's influence, so things should dissipate and rapidly improve.

And, of course, the WEC cars have headlights.
 
If cars are going to be crawling around and aquaplaning into a spin at every turn, why would you even want to watch it? Undriveable rain is undriveable rain, be it single seaters, touring cars, GT cars or prototypes. Even the course cars were squirming around.

Reminds me of what happen to the pace car during last year's Toronto Indycar event.



Proves the point of racing in a heavy downpour is asking for trouble.
 
Even more pointless comparing normal rain events to those brought on by a hurricane. Add to that, COTA sits next to a flood plain and the lowest portions of the track will be rivers because of it. What I saw in FP3 would have made for awful racing. Cars aquaplaning at extremely low speeds.

McLaren have put some red flowvis paint on Button's front wing endplate, and it actually looks cool. Can McLaren paint they're endplates red for the rest of the season/

To be honest, I've felt all season that the Mclaren livery is the most interesting and coolest looking one, even though the team has been doing terrible. I always have a mini moral dilemma when attempting to root for them...


Also, if you compare this to the MotoGP race this year, there should be nothing to question or complain about. Granted, they were right on the verge of being able to run slicks, but because of that pesky portion where there was a track bridge or whatever they are called, water didn't dry up in the area beneath it! So, they postponed until the track dryer truck sorted it out. You could argue this was silly and that they could have just put inters on and raced, but I personally felt the call was definitely good.

Just saying though, at least the rain tires allow any running at all. Plus, I've only seen 2-3 wet COTA races, so all the more I'm excited more than disappointed!
 
The MP4-30 is easily one of the prettiest cars on the grid. Just a shame it doesn't have the pace to match the looks. I also like how the honda engine has a distinct burble to it.
 
Normally pretty bullish on driving in the wet but that was the right call

Considering the puddles those workers were trying to drain all afternoon long were deep enough to drown small children and animals, that was the correct call.

Racing in the rain is fun. Racing in a flood definitely isn't.
 
FWIW the NWS station at the Austin-Bergstrom airport recorded 4.8 inches of rain today on top of the 1.75" of rain on Friday with another .5" of rain forecast to fall tonight. Sunday's forecast looks like there is a good chance the race will be dry,highs in the mid 60's, and winds 20-25 mph.
 
Watching qualifying for the Gold Coast 600, and here's something Formula 1 needs to do: show highlights of the pole-sitters's lap. How many times have we seen the camera pick up the first guy out of the pits on the final run, follow his flying lap, and have him finish eighth while the only thing that we see of the actual pole-sitters's lap is the exit of the final corner? I remember it at Sepang a few years ago - the camera followed Massa for an entire lap while Vettel, Alonso and Hamilton were neck-and-neck over the lap and we didn't see a thing of it.

Or, better yet, have two qualifying sessions. At the end of Saturday, the provisional grid is set. On Sunday morning, the top ten return for a one-lap shootout.
 
Why are we comparing WEC to F1? There's no relation whatsoever...

I think it is. If the tractor wasn't there, there wouldn'tve been a horrific crash and we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Also even LMP1 cars are 150kg heavier than F1. Weight makes a big difference in the rain.
 
How hard is the rain? Is it better than yesterday?
