I'm sure race car drivers enjoy racing too. I'm sure there are plenty of people who for whatever reason (not enough talent, not enough money, too old, too disabled, or any combination of the previous, presumably) might also enjoy getting to be a race car driver. I guess we have to ban race car drivers now too :ouch::ouch:
Can you hold up a sign? Can you drive cars fast enough to compete in a professional racing event?

Anyway, I couldn't care less whether the grid girls were still there or not, I mean it's not like I watch racing solely because there are good looking women standing there with a sign, if I want to see good looking women I just click a couple of links on my computer and Google gives me what I wanted and a bit more. Of course it's nice to see them standing there, but having them there makes about as much difference as having a TV in your car, 99.9% of the time you won't even notice if they even show up.

Waiting to see the end of the abuse imposed to beautiful woman which is enforced to star adverts for shampoos, clothes, cars, watches...

That's me last September having a chat with the "grid girl" that was being kind enough to shield me from the sun while waiting in line to start a hill climb. We had a long chat because a competitor before me crashed and I had too wait there for a long time (vehicle removal, track cleaning underway)

I remember her perfectly, she was the same age as my oldest daughter, she was already in university and although she had no hopes in the modelling/fashion industry (not tall enough, according to what she told me) she was nevertheless invited for these (mostly amateur) motorsports events where she had great fun and made some litle money, always handy when you are young and try to finish your studies.

I think the WEC guys are slaves of the PC Police. And these are the same people that hold an yearly contest to elect a Miss Le Mans? Shouldn't they end this too? Oh and btw, make them stop with ALL ADVERTISING and billboards featuring beautiful women, doesn't matter if famous actresses or just beautiful models whose names only the modelling industry knows.

I hate the stupidity and self righteousness of these decisions.

Grid girls often do more than just stand there and hold a flag, some not much, some much more, but the fact is you couldn't expect a fan to complete that job as effectively as someone that looks the part and does it regularly. This idea that the back-patting purists have - that since it doesn't relate to the on track action, it means it's okay to use this as an opportunity to gain a few bonus points for appearing to be all modern and pro-equality - is pretty short-sighted. The original reason may well have been pretty valid, however it's easily solved without appealing to the "we must make everyone equal and offend nobody" brigade.

Making sure that they have adequate clothing for the situation is one thing, but this objectifying thing... it's utterly ridiculous and pales into insignificance next to some of the shocking and vile behaviour that much more prevalent sports <cough>football<cough> demonstrate and instil in kids of all ages. Fall over, cry like a baby, spit, bite, be racist, be offensive, nail strippers, get drunk, dodge taxes and buy your way out of convictions, and you can earn £100,000 a week! Appreciate a beautiful woman and everyone looses their minds. And this thing about how it might make younger girls feel.... because of grid girls?? Turn on the TV, watch the TV they watch and tell me Grid Girls are the problem!

There seems to be quite a lot of use of the word 'ban' in the last few pages. Could someone enlighten me as to what has been banned, please?

Genuine question: what else do they do, generally? Presumably even if they're not doing the standing-on-the-grid bit they won't be out of work?

Right so...what planet are you from Roger? Mars? Venus? Please save us the pain and just stop.

This takes "digging yourself into a hole" to a whole new level...

Stop...just....STOP.

Well, you sure told him.

WEC banned grid girls.

Roo
That's what I ment: are they actually banned, as in a sanction will be enforced if a team employs one, or have they just been dropped?

Dropped.

That's what I thought.

So nothing is being prevented. Going by what @MatskiMonk posted, no-one is going to be out of work. The only difference is that there will be two dozen or so less people on the grid before a race, and over the last few pages it's been responded to like finding a woman attractive is now punishable by death.

If you (the plural you - obviously not you personally, Furinkazen) want to see women not wearing much, well, you're on the Internet. The presence or absence of grid girls at race events makes absolutely no difference whatsoever.

It seems most would disagree and banning grid girls from one series is the end of seeing beautiful women. I have no objection to having them there, but nor do I have a rage of anger for them not being there on the grid. With or without the racing won't change

Only 6 days until the best racing series returns!

Are any of you guys getting to Silverstone or indeed any WEC race?

Lucky you if so. I've got no friends interested in endurance racing so MotorsTV is as close as I'll probably ever get. I'd love to do the whole camper van trip to Le Mans someday.

Just realised this post sounds like a lonely hearts advertisement!

Come down. I'll be there, and buy you a drink for a such a long journey!

I wouldn't want to generalise to the extent that I'd say all of them would have a lot else to do - it would appear to vary by person, team and series. Some just get the call, stand there for a little while, earn a bit of money and go. I've seen lots double up as promo/leaflet girls for sponsors about the circuit, some getting involved with the smiley smiley, laugh and nod side of hospitality (only had hospitality twice). The only time other than when they line up on the grid, that most people will really get to see them is the pit walk or autograph sessions, where again some will just stand there smiling, others will get more involved in managing the crowd and drivers in what can be a chaotic situation....

None of this is something that has to be done a pretty girl in lycra, but they are there and you know as well as I do, a lot of camera's get pointed their way* so it's a great opportunity to get sponsor/team logos in the media... I think it depends on who organises the girls as to what else they do, to be fair in events like this (WEC/LMS), the only other thing I've seen them do is promoting sponsors and hang around smiling at VIP's, in series like WTCC and DTM I didn't see them do much more at all. but either way they'd be a truck load better than some fan-zone random pick autograph hunting weirdo (which is what some people are suggesting).

Well, I understand how you see it that way, but I disagree, for me it's all part of the visual tapestry of a race weekend, not just an opportunity to see women not wearing much. I took 1480-ish photo's at Brands this weekend, about 28 were of grid girls... if I just wanted to see naked chicks I could just use the internet, but personally I like to have something other than cars to point the camera at.

<snip>
I typed out a really long rant here, but was getting so far off-topic....

*... and that's really what it comes down to, getting attention. It's simply advertising, marketing, and branding. Grid girls are not even a secondary ripple of the drop in the ocean of women being portrayed, and portraying themselves, in a risque fashion to further either their, or their employers, bank balance.

I'm there Saturday and Sunday, I live nearby so I won't bother camping. I've also got Le Mans all booked :)

Go on your own then. I am, but then I'm a boring bastard. I'll be there all weekend, from Friday afternoon onwards. With regards to Le Mans - there's at least a dozen GTPers going, although not all together, so whilst you might end up camping by yourself you could always spend most of your weekend with some of us.

That's pretty much what bothers me most - the whole monkeys-in-shoes thing. It just seems so... stupid.

Gee now you tell us we could have had a big massive gtp sleep over and @Roo could have brought his fluffy onesie.

Any more talk like that, my boy, and we'll be playing Buckaroo on you whilst you sleep. Again.

(You promised you wouldn't tell!)

Only if I can have the bunny ears.

Yup, I'm doing 16 events this year (1 down, 15 to go) on my own, including 4 in foreign euro land :D.... but then I'm a reeeeeally boring bastard :D

Most of my rant was about that. I agree to a point, but experience has taught me that it's effective, and also, not at all only something that men fall for. We've put women in hotpants to get traffic at really boring totally unrelated trade shows, and it works... and we've held focus groups for young mums to figure out how to pitch to them and most, if not all, voted for the shirt off/6-pack guy concept. Like it or not, it's an easy option to exploit peoples basic wants. I'll end my off-topicness with the most degrading embarrassing picture I took of a gird girl that I could find... all the fun ones are in the BTCC, and although I didn't catch most of the space hopper race, I still think this one would have won anyway...

I'll be at COTA again this year.

I'll be there from mid-Friday morning, fancy a brew?

I've also just spoken to the Editor from Daily Sportscars who has just informed me that I have been selected to attend the Nissan NISMO Fan Forum that is taking place on Friday evening at the Wing Pitlane.

Interesting development, good luck for the Fan Forum. What will happen during said forum, may I ask?

Won't be going to Silverstone LMS/ILMC/WEC for the first time since 2008 :(

Thank you. Essentially it's where a dozen-or-so people are selected to go into the Nissan hospitality, listen to a presentation about the team with media present and then ask questions regarding the project.

Ah, I see, so in essence it is a media presentation followed by a Q&A session with Nissan representatives. Well, it'll be a curious experience for sure, make sure to ask interesting questions about that insane LMP car of theirs. Just don't get too risky with them, though. :sly:

Sure. Have you still got my number from Le Mans last year? Let me know if you can't find it.
