I wouldn't be surprised if Bernie twisted the stewards' arms a bit to deny Manor the chance to start.
 
No need for Bernie, I'm afraid.

During Q1, any driver whose best qualifying lap exceeds 107% of the fastest time set during that session, or who fails to set a time, will not be allowed to take part in the race.
Under exceptional circumstances however, which may include setting a suitable lap time in a free practice session, the stewards may permit the car to start the race.

Hamilton’s 1’39.269 puts the cutoff at 1’46.217.

Stevens pulled a 1’45.704 in FP2, when Merhi overall best (FP3) was 1’46.647

Stevens could be ok, but saving Merhi will require pretty accommodating stewards.

Maybe Bernie will charge half the shipping fees this time...

I imagine Vettel must be happy with speed of Ferrari and also a bit annoyed losing out to Hamilton two years in a row by such a small margin of less than a tenth.

Rosberg, don't know what he was playing at there being in the same team. Seems he can't find the grip so resorted to slowing his team-mate down a bit.

I was quite impressed by the grip level in the wet, not much off the dry times by Manor.

Mercedes should be furious with him for that lousy move - and the stewards should be looking at it too.
 
Find the Rosberg question very odd as well, I mean he's been driving in f1 since what now 2006, so that's his 9th Malaysian GP, probably a couple of wet session and he still can't figure out where the grip is on wet ?

I mean I could understand if it's a track where it rain rarely but here, just weird.

Even giving him benefit of the doubt, seems a really risky thing to do as it could result in getting a penalty and I imagine he would have been aware there would be cars behind him on a fast lap. I wonder also if team told him about cars behind him.
 
Is there a way to explain Williams' tyre strategy during Q3? Only an out-lap with full wets, then inters, another set of inters after only a flying lap.
 
Now that they only used the wets/inters in Q3, which tyres are they supposed to start on? Or is it a free choice? Can someone explain it, please?

Top 10 will start on the tyres they posted their Q2 fastest lap, so it's softs for all inside top 10 ;)

If it's declared a Wet race (I know that isn't thought likely now) then do they have to use the wet/inter set they quali'd on?

As a related aside, was Q3 declared Wet? I noticed the cars didn't have the wet lights on, just the normal flash-on-recharge.

I hadn't realised that they had a "free" set of Q3-only options (with non-Q3 runners getting a free set for the race), is that new for 2015?

Thank you for the input. That should be interesting then, because the softs don't seem to last long. Someone has any information/guess how many laps the softs can take from the start of the race? I guess not so many... Räikkönen could have a good go on the hard compound.

Hamilton's fastest time is irrelevant.

As long as they set a time that's within 107% of the fastest time in that session then they should be OK, and I believe they have both done that.
 
@daan My understanding is that "that session" specifically refers to Q1, which would make Hamilton's time the standard for the 107%...guideline.

Stevens was within the measure in FP2, but Merhi never reached the cutoff in any session.

Anyway they'll be at the start tomorrow.:)
 
Good qualifying, fantastic job by Vettel and Ferrari and a good job by young Verstappen 👍

In Q2 they only had one clear lap because of rain and kimi was in traffic, nearly took down Hamilton with him.
