The thing is, the STi isn't a stock econobox, and the only thing 'race inspired' is the lip.

Which is why I never called it rice 👍. Was just answering the question posted before me.

Also it's not a term I'd ever use.

I know, I was trying to reference it back to dsgerbc who was. 👍

Does the normal Impreza not count? It did for previous generations.

Ughhhhh that's my car.....in the small offset test. I always knew it was a safe car but this confirmation is just icing on the cake. Great car for sure. Bring on winter already! (j/k)

One thing I noticed from that video that really bothers me...

The gauge display.
I test drove the 2015 a week or two back and really didn't like the fact they went away from a central tachometer. In that video the guy tries to read his RPMs at certain speeds and it actually takes some real effort, he has to lean in and take a moment- that's not good. :(

He only has trouble seeing it at the start. He didn't move his head at all later on when launching at 4k/4.5k. My guess is that he's just trying to be really accurate to answer the questions he was asked.
The one thing I thought was odd is him shifting to 5th @35mph. 35mph in 5th is probably like ~1700.

I don't find that odd. My car has 100lbs*ft of torque and I often cruise at 35mph in 5th (top) gear.

It just makes no sense to me. You get worse fuel economy and are far from the powerband in case you need to get going, which would require a shift to 4th. 4th in the wrx is ~2100rpm at 35mph which is pretty low as well so why do 5th and not 4th?

I like variety.

Is there proof? I'm convinced that, at least for flat ground and downhill, 5th is always more fuel efficient than 4th

I suppose in lower gear you are causing more engine braking.

At low speed you don't need much power, but at high revs you need more fuel to maintain the revs (due to mechanical friction). At a higher gear the revs are lower so the engine braking is less you can basically just idle.

Depends on the gearing and engine. It's not at all rare for 4th to be more efficient than 5th in a turbocharged car.

Observations I've made on the 3 subarus I've driven extensively. 2000 2.5rs, 2011 WRX, and 2004 Fozzy XT. They lag below 2200-2500rpm, the cars felt like they were bogged down. I thought it was due to the turbo motors with the WRX and XT but having driven the 2.5rs recently, it was the worst. Under 2400 it was a awful. Once I changed my shift points and to keep rpm in a higher range, drivability was better and mpg was also improved.
I also noticed the same happen in a 1994 530i, 2010 honda fit, 2008 cooper s.
On cars like the 2003 cobra, various nissan maximas, or the g8 gxp, being down low wasn't an issue at all.

My '97 EJ22 only complains if you dip below 1500rpm. It's a pretty clear boundary. I can't say for sure about fuel economy but most of our driving out here is on 55mph roads.

What bothers me is that he has a brand new car and he still has to get a stupid looking aftermarket phone holder with a cable running across his dash ruining everything about his interior.

car makers should make a special place for wires to go. Wires from GPSs and other stuff are extremely annoying
