Now that's better. Hate to sound to capricious but this will be a day one purchase for me.

Don't like it. Just not aggressive enough, the new Impreza body just doesn't do it any favors.

I see the new Volvo S40 is out. Does it come with a T4? :D

Too bad it's "not an Impreza"... those rear haunches and that new front end would certainly dress up the rather drab sedan quite nicely.

There we go. That's exactly how I would have expected the STI to look. I like how the rear wing actually curves with the bodyline instead of being straight across. Swap out the gold wheels for some black wheels and this will look even better. I will be taking one of these for a test drive the first chance I get. It will be out of my price range but will still be fun to take for a ride.

I like the wheels. However, they make the car about 50% more EVO-ish looking. Doesn't matter though, I'm not into sedans.

Which won't be happening at least for a year from now. Expect the first several months worth of arrivals to be sold-orders.

The general form looks more like the Evo X than ever before. Still prefer this, though.

Sad that there's no hatch (I actually preferred it last gen), and that the engine is largely a carryover. Any word on weight?

I have always preferred the look of the evo. So that is what makes this STI/WRX even more attractive. Its a perfect combination IMO. I am most excited that the WRX finally has a 6 speed. Really wish my 04 WRX had a 6 speed. Needs it bad. Especially since our speed limit here is 70mph. If I get anything around 70mph the engine is revving much higher that I like. The 6 speed puts the engine revving right where it should be IMO. The 6 speed will also help with gas mileage.

I sure hope they don't stick a damn CVT in it as well. I am however curious about what type of engine the STi will have. The performance numbers for WRX (last gen) was on par with the Sti in terms of acceleration (due to gearing), handling on the other hand was the biggest difference. Having driven both, the Sti has much more torque and the suspension is much stiffer (handles awesome though) I hope the performance gap between the WRX and STi justifies the price increase, especially if they have a 2.5 direct injected twin scroll turbo with the adjustable diff in the STi.

Having said that, the new Sti looks awesome. I was almost going to get a 4 series until I saw these pictures this morning..

Not much surprise after seeing the new WRX, but I can imagine how sweet it would look with the wing removed as I would do, especially in that shot from the rear. 👍

You'd think a company the size of Subaru would pay for proper in motion photos instead of Photoshop motion blur  Looking at the article, some of the shots have actual motion blur, so I'm guessing some just weren't "fast" enough for the desired blur, but the reflections kind of give it away :p

Also, Subaru EVO X, amirite?

Well, it's an STi. It's pretty much exactly what one would expect given it's predecessor. Either way, it doesn't look bad, and I'm interested to hear what kind of numbers it ends up putting down.

Good lord, Ford. Get around to giving us an AWD version of the ST, please.

I sure hope they don't stick a damn CVT in it as well.

The Forester XT with the CVT may be quick on paper, but it's actually kind of meh.

Either give the STI's CVT a locking converter, or go for a good six-speed automatic, as Mazda uses on the Mazda3. Tune it for snappy torque converter locking and aggressive downshifting as Mazda does, and I will be very, very happy.

Did you even drive it?
No, it's actually quite quick.
Maybe not off the line, but from a roll it's very responsive, jumps to proper RPMs very quickly and hold's em there.
I drove it back-to-back after Caddy ATS 3.6 and Infinity Q50S. Both of these have 300+ HP, but the XT felt quicker when floored.

Once on the dragstrip and handling pad, and a second time where I had to deliver it to a photoshoot... the photoshoot venue was in a secluded, hilly area where we could really give it the beans.

Of course it's quick. It's very quick. But the transmission is still "meh." It takes a dog's age to rev up to the torque peak or horsepower peak (depending on what drive mode you're in) to start accelerating, the motor feels like it lacks torque compared to the old 2.5, and the transmission lacks locking behaviour... it feels like there's a lot of slur built into it. It's also indecisive on shifts, and the paddle-shifting mode isn't nearly as satisfying as in some other cars.

Sports+ certainly helps. And it's very frantic off the line or from a roll in Sports+, but the same slurring behaviour and indecisiveness remains. When you're bombing out of a second/first gear corner and you're stuck at mid-range rpms instead of at the top of the range where you want to be, that's kind of disappointing. The CX-5 we had at the time, which was a 2.0, even, had a much better transmission and corner-exit response, even if the Fozzie would leave it for dead on any straight longer than nine yards.

I know Subaru uses the same JATCO boxes as Nissan does, but in both manufacturers, the transmissions actually feel much better mated to lower-powered engines than higher-powered ones... where it feels like there's some safety factor programmed in to lower torque and protect the transmission in full-throttle driving. I drove the Forester 2.0i for a week, and I absolutely loved it, despite the CVT. Despite the lack of power. The 2.0XT felt like it could use a bit more development.

Don't get me wrong... it's a much better transmission, overall, than the old four-speed. (Hell, old Subaru automatics were absolutely terrible) But Subaru could do a whole lot better.

All Impreza STi's have always looked mean (Especially the 22b), this one is no exception.

And Subaru found more gold paint for the wheels, the world is right again!

Someday, I will get to hoon an Impreza STi.

I like it but I have thought for the past 4years anything over 35 grand for a Sti is too much without a significant performance boost that goes the same hear. Give me the current wrx gen hatch or 2015wrx sedan. Those at this point are the better bargain. Or maybe the focus st or used evo x. Used nismo z or heck new mustang.gonna be car shopping maybe late next year so starting to look.

In the 90's I grew to like the ugliness. This one is too pretty. Somebody smash the front end into a wall a few times and we'll have a proper WRX.

The EJ25 is a huge disappointment for me, mostly because of fuel efficiency. Other than that, I love it. If only Best Motoring could test it.

Also, damn you Subaru for making the WR blue a limited edition colour.

Showed my mom the STi. First things she says, "And you can hang your underwear on that wing."

I'm sure Best Motor TV will test the new STI, it just might be a little while since they are so new and BMTV doesn't seem to be doing a whole lot of work atm.

You'd think BMTV would know to **** or get off the pot...
