I like it.
Sure, the bodywork does not look as tautly packaged as the other WRXs. The flow of the contours is similar to that of many regular, generic mid-size sedans of today. It's kinda a bit more dynamic-looking and coupé-ish; yes, I'd say that the boxiness was part of previous WRXs' appeal - they shouldn't really look so curvaceous. Compared with the older WRXs, this one would be my least favorite. And I can't imagine this as a car being thrashed on a dirt rally course. It doesn't look like it's a suitable background environment, even in photos.
So yes, a lot felt lost.
But it's not boring. Staid, maybe. But not boring. Yes, its face does not have the pugnacious, intimidating feel apparent on previous models. Yet, it still has the big hood scoop, slightly flared wheel arches, and partially protruding sections on the bumpers and side skirts. It's still something that stands out for me, and not in an overly garish way. There's still a hint of that "boyracer" vibe. (sorry, it's just for my lack of a better word, I don't mean that the car looks like a ricer though) It has character similar to that of the previous models, only toned down a bit. It's not so mad and bonkers, but that's fine.
In fact, I like it much more than the WRX Concept. The lines of that concept looked too coupé-ish to be a proper WRX, I'd say. And there's too much sci-fi feel. (or maybe that's just because of the strong lighting during the presentation?)
Still, we don't know how it drives, though. But even if it's just as good as the previous WRX and not particularly better, it's still something I'd consider a bargain if you can get it under US$30,000.
