Burst fracture sounds nasty, although I guess that's the opposite of a compression fracture.

And good to see that the user on reddit who claimed to know things was wrong.

When they say L1 Vertebrae, where exactly would that be? As much as I try to keep up with medical terms, I still get tripped up on some.

L1 is near the bottom of the spine.

So Tony basically broke his ass?

My guess is after looking up on it he'll be back between Easter-late April
L1 is the start of the lumbar region. It's more that he can't bend over very well and leg movements will be very restricted.

Which would, predictably, make driving very difficult.
For some reason I wonder if Tony would have left NASCAR after 2012 if he knew he had to go through all of this.

Probably not. He loves racing too much.

Injury in 2013, fatal accident in 2014, very subpar 2015, injury in 2016. It seems like he doesn't have the same reflexes he used to have.

L1 is the vertebrae just below the ribcage, right in the middle of the back. It also happens to be one of, if not the smallest, vertebrae

I'm thinking he had curled forward and a part of the flip threw him back against the seat and caused the damage.

I just looked up vertebral burst fracture. :scared:

He's pretty lucky to not have worse damage from it. Fragmenting vertebra and stuff like that.

Had to look up what a burst fracture was. Apparently there's 2 kinds, stable and not stable. Stable doesn't usually require surgery and he could be back in a month or so from what I read.

He had surgery yesterday.

Unstable could require spinal fusion, which would mean about June before he came back

And for the 3rd in the last 4 years, it's time for #SmokeWillRise

Moving away from the joke, I feel bad for Tony. I really wish he could race in 2016 fighting for wins, contending up top but it doesn't seem like it's happening. :(

This is exactly how i feel :(, but if he can win hopefully in his final year, that alone will make me very happy; but we'll have to wait and see
