Could be Tristan Vautier driving in place of Hinch. He qualified for James Davison, who was driving the PWC races at Mosport this past weekend and is planning drive in the 500.

From the IndyStar.

No changes regarding the cars that I know of.

ESPN reported at the end of Sports Center that Hinchcliffe needed to have surgery as a piece of car pierced his leg. :odd: :scared:  WHAT?!

Now its just inexcusable. They need to slow these things down. To the people who will tell me that its a ballsy race series, Im well aware. But come on. Even if it were NASCAR, I'd rather them only hit 130MPH Than having body parts skewer them. Slow the cars DOWN!

EDIT: BBC Confirms:

The sport is not for everybody. I love how people are freaking out now there's always been crashes at IMS in a indycar for 100 years now and People love the speed and Indycar's goal for next year is to break the 236 mph speed record

Slowing them down wont help, the design of the DW12 is flawed. The only way to be safe is call the race off.

Debri entering the cockpit of the DW12 is not new, happened to justin Wilson at Fontana 2013 and other drivers.

Im really starting to hate the DW12. Its ugly, unsafe, just a garbage car.

You must not have read that article since it says nothing about his leg being pierced by some mystery piece of metal.

The more likely reason for the leg injury is he was hard on the brakes when the contact happened.Left foot braking.

I'm confused...some say something stabbed his leg...some say nothing...just when reporting was getting consistent...

Anybody stating the speed of the cars is the issue is a ninny. These basically the speeds we've been doing the past couple of years. And besides, only three flipped unassisted. The others were other factors.

I've watched Indy 500s. I know bad crashes happen. But is it not at all alarming that aero kits have flipped 3 cars, (not counting Hinch) and Put one in surgery?

Um...bro...THE COCKPIT IS STOCK DALLARA! That's another issue ENTIRELY. Besides, I wouldn't blame the Honda kit for what appeared to be driver error.

I was confirming he was in surgery. I didn't say anything about his leg other than taking ESPNs word, which knowing ESPN is probably wrong.

Didn't something penetrate the cockpit in Wheldon's crash as well? I remember hearing about that, of course it didn't have any affect on the outcome of the accident.

Guys...the cockpit is stock Dallara...REMEMBER?!

Probably right but I've tried to wipe that whole accident from my mind. :nervous:

Perhaps so has INDY. I know they made safety improvements, but why not just run the 2014 spec? It's a hell of a lot better than this, which if it stays as is, can very well produce another crash we want to forget.

Do I have to nail it into you skull...that this was driver error and not the aerokit? That the cockpit cell thing is FROM DALLARA... Did his car go backwards and reveal the DALLARA GROUND EFFECTS and fly? NO...it hit the wall...on a race track...going slower than last year.

If you look at the side pods of these cars, theres nothing there for protection. The wheels suspension takes all the force and is forced back into the cockpit.

Fernando Alonso said openwheel cars have poor side impact safety, the dallaras triangled shape makes it worse

In an effort to stop the wheel climbing they exposed the cockpit...Dallara could you do this for us basically?

Look. I'm not trying to start a war. I'm entitled to my opinion as much as you are so don't get sweary. I truly hope that I'm wrong. But look at the facts. Driver error or not, cars are getting airborne. All 1 car crashes. What's going to happen when someone spins in front of the field? Odds are, someone's going to hit them. Death is part of Motorsports, I know. But is that really a valid excuse? "It happens? " I feel not. I feel like INDY is making an attempt to fix it, but there's not a whole lot more that can be done. They can reduce speeds and remove the Shotty aero. It's not a fun solution but, safety first.
