I've been to 3 of the last 5 IndyCar races at Sonoma, and I plan to go this year. It's very spectator friendly. And you'll get the best fan experience in all of racing if you get yourself a garage/pit pass. Your best chance of meeting the drivers will be at Saturday autograph session. The time is coming, and I still haven't decided if I want to pull the trigger on Sonoma tickets... I could easily make the trip there and back to my hometown in a day, but having been there for an SCCA event, it didn't look spectator-friendly like Mazda Raceway was...
The only bad thing about Sonoma Raceway is leaving the track after the IndyCar race. You may be sitting in traffic for 2 hours.
