I don't know if I figured something out or have just confused myself more after about 20 mins of research as far the PSN and what NAT Type 2 and 3 do and mean to players connecting to other players.
My connection to cenk's room was essentially refused, or so I thought, for most of the night. I didn't think it was my issue until I decided to throw my ps3 in what most home routers/firewalls call a DMZ, which just allows unfiltered access to a LAN IP from the internet. A DMZ in an enterprise is used more as a buffer between the outside and the LAN to restrict access, mostly for web and/or remote access services. Generally, using the DMZ on a home router is only good for testing purposes.
So I am NAT 2, and I am to assume that cenk or someone else in the room that needed to connect to me to complete the mesh was NAT 3. Either way, I checked my firewall logs and there were 2 connections getting filtered up until the time I started using the DMZ:
Code:
Aug 12 23:56:50 ROUTER1 user.warn kernel: DROP IN=vlan1 OUT= MAC=00:21:29:cd:50:a2:00:90:1a:a3:63:9c:08:00:45:20:00:7a SRC=67.xxx.xxx.xxx DST=108.xxx.xxx.xxx LEN=122 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x20 TTL=253 ID=21958 PROTO=UDP SPT=3729 DPT=63906 LEN=102
Aug 12 23:56:50 ROUTER1 user.warn kernel: DROP IN=vlan1 OUT= MAC=00:21:29:cd:50:a2:00:90:1a:a3:63:9c:08:00:45:00:00:7a SRC=70.xxx.xxx.xxx DST=108.xxx.xxx.xxx LEN=122 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=250 ID=21856 PROTO=UDP SPT=61070 DPT=63906 LEN=102
Those 2 IP's were residential from San Diego and Jacksonville, FL. I did a search on the ports the PSN needs forwarded and 3729 and 61070 were not on that list, unless the docs were old. I'm also not quite sure why I haven't had this issue before.
One scenerio that I can think of as to why this happens is that if UPnP isn't working properly for NAT Type 2 users, which according to the connection self-test the ps3 does was the case for me, and if another user is NAT Type 3, the Type 3 player forces Type 2 to allow the incoming connection, which my firewall was blocking for some reason. I think Type 2 means that UPnP is working and you can accept connections from the outside and Type 3 means UPnP is disabled or not functioning and you must connect to someone else. It could also be based on available bandwidth. Can't find the link to the scant documentation Sony provides I read last night.
Anyway, long and not all too informative, but I remember when BTK had an issue connecting to chuyler's lounge after getting a new router, and grenade thought chuyler was the one that needed to put his ps3 in the DMZ. It was BTK that probably did as his firewall was most likely filtering packets from someone in the room that needed to connect to him for the topology to work right.
