I would like you race occasionally, but I would like to know what car to start with. I have no idea what the best car to tune to 450pp is. Thanks!

Get as many as you can modded to 450PP and drive a different one each race.

Thanks guys!

Cars that come with sport tires stock are typically better on sports tires than cars that come with comfort tires stock.

I will be on in a little bit. Anyone up for hot hatch racing?

Anyone know a good ballpark for 450 CS at Trial Mountain? I've got a miata built that I thin will fly.

anyone know how much bandwidth gt5 (gaming in general) consumes?

i am moving to the country. while I will retain high speed interwebs, there will be a (serious) bandwidth cap. high speed internet in rural areas is seriously lacking up here.

i'll have to see if i can continue hosting wednesdays.

I don't imagine that bandwidth is as big a problem as latency. I don't imagine the game is transmitting a lot of data (vector data, but no graphics), it just needs the data to arrive for processing rather quickly.

what type of latency numbers are required? from what i've been reading i should expect 75-150ms. i know on cable (what I am on now) it's in the 20-50 range.

hopefully my gt5 online gaming days are not numbered.

Last night was a bit ho hum. hot hatch turned FF run what ya brung. Unfortunately with variety comes separation and finding a race with more than three cars together aside from rome was impossible

There's plenty of Euro's we've raced with that don't seem to lag and I can't imagine them having better latency than that. I assume you're going to be running DSL? Generally, latency isn't as much an issue with DSL as it is as close to a dedicated line as you can get whereas cable can be saturated with neighbors traffic as well.

Nope, wireless 3G. DSL would be a treat in rural areas. I did a ping test to google.ca on the wknd when I was looking at it, 80ms. I understand it can flunctuate with 3G and gets worse depending on traffic at the local tower. Fortunately I play in off-hours.

The other option is satellite but latency is the huge issue there as well as high startup costs and some unfavourable reviews of the provider (xplornet).

Try running some of these tests from DSLreports.com, first starting with a line quality test. A couple of them you may have to register to run. I would try to get a baseline during peak and off-peak hours.

There was one pubber who was fast in everything he drove. Although most of his cars weren't street cars, he knew how to drive them and they served as bench mark. However, after some comments were made about his driving I payed closer attention. At Tsukuba, he divebombed me...so the next lap I did the same to show my distaste. He did it again the next lap but then went wide on the next turn. I followed my line and went track out, completely nudging him into the grass with my rear quarter as I passed by. That was the end of his race. He never made back the time lost. Not sure if he understood what I was doing...but I'll likely boot him the next time he comes in. I'm not a fan of that driving style, as you know. There are plenty of other opportunities to pass in this game without leaning on someone mid corner.

I had fun racing with Nic most of the night. Our cars were pretty close in performance. However I was having major tire wear issues. Even with 0 camber I could only make it 3 laps. After that my braking points and lines needed to be adjusted and I lost any competitive edge I may have had.

The game is beginning to bug me lately. This the break down of what seems to be required to win...

60% - pick the right car
20% - drive the car without crashing
10% - balance power reduction and ballast
10% - tune the suspension/LSD for max grip

I usually just haphazardly pick a car and then spend the rest of the evening working on the 10% which is tuning it right. But it simply cannot overcome the fact that other cars are just better. I look at the competition and when I see a Ford Focus I pretty much know I will lose to it unless the driver sucks.

When I switch to what I feel is a fast car, I usually qualify well and stay out front the entire race. What's the fun in that?

Maybe we should try a few power/weight restriction nights. I don't know if it will help but at least it will mix up the tuning strategies a bit. I just wish there was a way to limit how much engine reduction can be used.

+ 10% gearing

Doh, i knew something didn't add up. but it wasn't gearing I needed to add, it was ballast and power reduction. I suppose they could be considered tuning but its more about getting the ratio of power and weight correct so you can actually pass cars.

Gearing plays an important role on certain tracks, but if you are getting beat down a straight by another car, more often than not it has nothing to do with your gears, it is your power/weight ratio.

Tracks where you can get beat by gearing are usually tracks where you spend little to no time in 1st or 2nd gear. On these tracks you want close ratios, but you want to start at a higher ratio for the first or 2nd gear. For example, you may want to tune the top gear for draft passing at Indy or Daytona and use the next gear down tuned specifically for top speed out of the draft.

I did some laps.(miata online 450pp cs)my best time is 1'42.171 ...but if you tune specifically for CS you can go in the 1'41.xxx , most of my laps were in the 1'42.420-575 range.

Public lobby are made of 80% tuner/race car/111r,nsx... that's boring...at least some of us had a good race mid pack with normal cars. 👍

Any theme for tonight ?

I'd like to start thinking about what cheater cars to line up.

It's been a while since we did vintage cars. How about the following...

400pp
Pre-1975
CS tires

I got a non-HD USB recorder. The plan is to record my parents old home videos for a christmas present...but I figured I would test it out on some races.

I went too aggressive on the compression for this one, but its still a good watch. Nic and I had a great battle at Indy last night and it ended with him draft passing me and placing 0.018 seconds ahead.

When did you guys make the jump to CS tires? I have always wanted to participate in the races and am a big fan of the 450pp format, but I am never home in time. I believe most of you are on the East coast?

It's ok to show up late. The room is usually alive and hopping until 12:00EST, sometimes later.

We mix things up with tires. Most nights are still Sport Soft tires but occasionally I like to see people slide around on comfort tires. It increases the skill requirement and weakens the dominance of certain vehicles. It also poses new tuning challenges.

Video from Nurb night last week. The only race where I had a competitive car. I got punted at the beginning but it didn't take long to work my way back.

Hot hatch night. Some aggressive driving with pubbers puts everyone on edge. Once again, I got punted on the first turn and lost a few places. It took a while to get to the front because my car didn't have much passing power.

I tried to join last night, but apparently I was lagging really bad. I haven't had that happen before. Any tricks if it happens again? Does leaving and joining again usually fix it? Something I should change in my setup?

Yeah, your lag was crazy. I tried to follow you but you were jumping all over the track.

I'd suggest leaving and joining again. Only other thing to do is check your internet connection and make sure your wife/kids aren't watching Netflix or downloading porn.

Are we running vintage tonight? Just want to confirm so I can get some cars ready.

What I usually do is:
Leave the porn/torrent/email machine off. Clear GT5 cache. Possibly rebuild PS3 database. Sprinkle holy water around PS3. Sacrifice chicken. Then rejoin room.

The core group has a lemons series race tonight. Someone else not part of that is welcome to host.

I love comfort soft nights! Great fun in the Stratos last night
