A bit disappointed in the BMW Vision Concept?

Actually, I was foolish enough to vote before driving the car (and voted No), and now knowing that the drives quite well (yes even on RH), and the power to weight is amazing, ect, I'm slightly disappointed by how pedestrian this car looks. It's almost a proof of concept to say 'well, do you like it? Let's put it into limited production then'. It seems that the company that made the i8, then simply put it that into production without many changes, could've made an amazingly beautiful car with interesting proportions... Instead it looks like a combination of all of the M cars on sale, and dare I say it, some of the X cars too.

The limit of grip was either 'wow, how is it still holding on?' then 'ok thats the limit' which was very frustrating the time inbetween was bonkers fast, slightly tarnished how fun it was to get gold.

Maybe Sports Soft would be a better choice than Racing Hard, but I again am commenting without trying what I'm suggesting, but hey the car looks good, drives reasonably well.

While your credentials of "have sat in a Mercedes and looked them up on the internet" are quite impressive (can I use "owns a Seville" as proof of what the future of Cadillac holds?), I'd hesitate to say practical car design is going to change that much in 6 years. Particularly when the SLS successor has already been announced and is going into production at the end of the year. I don't believe Michelin is working on the literal-rubber-band tires as we speak, for example; or that Mercedes would do too well on the market with a car with zero rear visibility yet at the same time about 2 feet of unnecessary rear overhang.

1. I have owned Mercedes cars myself, as have many members in my family. MB is my favorite car brand, so I either spend alot of time in RL or the Internet hunting for "Erlkönig" pictures, listening to rumour gossip about upcoming cars, watching design studies at dealerships or visiting the MB museum in Stuttgart. Sadly I won't be able to fullfill my dream of working for MB (I live to far away), but I still managed to find a working place at a competitor, so I can still hope tp get insider information about them.
I don't claim to be a expert and excuse myself If was trying to sound like one. I am just a die hard fan, who gets annoyed when people make statements as the one I quoted before, especially when those people seem to have little knowledge about MB.

2. The AMG GT is no SLS replacement, while it cerainly shares its platform, it is a new car. Also, I was talking about the generation of cars following the current one, coming in near future (2020 onwards), not about cars launching in 12 months. Look at how differnent the new C Class looks from the one 10 years ago. I can definitely imagine a MB GT car having a slight resamblance with the VGT.

3. It would not be the first MB with zero rear rear visibility!

4. Its just a design study... I doubt we are ever going to see the VGT going into mass production. But I can totally see them using design features as the headlights, new grill or basic body porpotions one day.

I like the car. It looks good and drives well but, that sound! Really? A racing spec machine that sounds like that? It takes away the fun of driving it for me.

So regarding the interior argument: Well after doing a few shots in photo mode, it turns out that both the Mercedes and BMW actually have interiors. The reason they aren't visable is because the interior has not been rendered to reflect the light going into the cars, effectively "masking" them if you will. I studied them on tracks with good lighting and on the BMW, I can definately see a racing seat and a steering wheel that looks a lot like the steering wheel from their DTM car and a complete dash.

I'm not disappointed. I love the car. At the same time, though, it's just not quite what I was expecting. It seems a little too close to what they have produced already. The car doesn't have that "out of this world" kind'a look to it.

I think that initial Stingray Concept you showed (the silver one) is plain ugly.
I love the down-to-earth styling of the VGT BMW. I feel like they could actually produce it and not get laughed at.

I'm still kinda bummed that the car we got wasn't the M1's spiritual successor, but instead is the new 2 series thats cosplaying an E9 3.0L CSL.

Still sexy though.

To me Bmw Vision GT doesn't fell alot like a concept car but looks like a car they can make in real life unlike the merecedes benz AMG vision GT which looks very futures.

I quite like the fact the BMW is pretty down to earth and plausible, I love the original Citroen GT, the Merc VGT was okay - I hated the front and the wheels/tyres/wheel gap was/were silly, but I don't think we've seen anything truly 'out-there' yet.

The MASSIVE missed opportunity for me is not having multiple liveries and it's own championship in the game for the BMW VGT. Imagine they had done 8 liveries themed along (but not necessarily with the proper sponsors) the current DTM liveries... that would be awesome, and the BMW VGT is a Race Car from the word go, it would just have made sooo much sense.

BMW VGT will get interior, how soon don't know, but it will get it.

Other "standard" black silhouette cockpits have big speedometer and rpm clock on cockpit view, BMW VGT has gauges positioned same way as premium cockpit has, no big gauges just small gauge bar on bottom.

You might want to check old Mercedes race/concept/record cars before making that statement.

I am 100% sure I spend more time of my life inside Mercedes cars or reading/researching about them as you do and the AMG VGT looks how I imagine a next generation (+2020) SL/SLS/SLR to look like. A Vision Gran Turismo.

While I like BMWs effort, I can't see anything futuristic about its design, it could just be a M235 special edition coming out tommorow. Infact, the i8 looks alot more futuristic to me.

Like you said about BMWs and their famous sporty saloons, Mercedes has also a very rich history to choose from. If we talk about sport/race cars they have a far richer history.

Edit: I might add that the ever increasing AMG influence bothers me. The AMG GT is not even called "Benz" anymore...

SLS and SLR yes, SL, I fail to see it.

You point out yourself that MB has a rich history. So why not dig into it and produce something that they haven't done 100 times already, i.e. "reinvent the SL"? There is so much stuff in there, no doubt about it.
I still believe that it would have been better to turn the S-class into a VGT, because that is what MB is to me. They had the coupé concept ready anyway. That is also the one type of car they do better than anyone else,even I won't argue that the 7 is better (BMW fan here, heart and soul,for every MB you have driven, I have probably driven a BMW).
I also believe that a VGT does not need to be "futuristic", I want to see what the brand believes is a great concept. Just my opinion anyway.
That the BMW VGT looks so much like the 2er shows what a great job they did in recreating the 2002. It's an even further evolution.
One criticism I would have is that it's a racing car, I'd have preferred a road car first.

But hey, BMW racing cars rule anyway, ask Bruno Spengler ;-)

No, it's not exactly the same shape as the initial sketches, but it still got many of the key features. Long, sleek body with bulging wheels, very low roof, etc. Most of the extremes are still present. The BMW lost it's dramatic spoiler, thin mirrors, the hood became very basic, the whole thing became less "spiky". It really looks more like a modern road car, rather than a futuristic design, at least to me, anyways.

In no way do I think it's a bad car… It's just not as exciting to look at as I had hoped.

I've already completely fallen for it. I used my first one for 600PP racing, and I bought a second one and changed the oil for BMW VGT spec racing.
Now I bought a Mercedes VGT Racing to see if I can get those two cars to square off with even times.

Look at how differnent the new C Class looks from the one 10 years ago. I can definitely imagine a MB GT car having a slight resamblance with the VGT.

The one that just went on sale is very wild in comparison; mostly because it no longer has to act as the entry level model, and the trend for premium brands has been swoopy styling ever since the CLS made Mercedes piles of money.


On the other hand, the W204 that just went out of production, which didn't have the luxury of the CLA-series being the buffer, deliberately looked like the one from ten years prior (since the W203 became so quickly dated looking, though at the same time sharing many details with its predecessor); and the W202 looked almost exactly like the W201 (also of ten years earlier) with more modern detailing. Between now and 2020 I have no doubt that Mercedes will have created a concept car which will shape their design language for the next decade, as the Vision SLR, Vision CLS and F800 all did for the last 15 years, far more than a car whose entire relevance so far has started and stopped with its relationship to a game of questionable influence itself.

Well, i haven't driven it yet due to lack of internet connection, but from what i've seen, i'm impressed. I'll explain why...

The VGT cars we've seen so far have been pretty wild, and yet i've always hoped they 'might' make one of them for real life. BMW has come closest with this. To put it simply, we play GT6 because we like to 'drive' cars which we will probably never own. The Toyota supercar is also pretty close and I could see this being the next 'Supra' but for me, this could be the new M2...

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

The fact that they have only "reinvented" the 300SL one time in the last 50 years makes your argument invalide. The SLR had its roots in the 300SLR, which is a race car with no ties to the old SL at all. The SLS is a 300SL successor.

@Tornado As you see in your picture, 10 years changed alot. The only C classes which fall into that time frame are the 202-205. The w204 facelift was already a bold design.
You can argue how much influence any VGT car makes. I think Manufacturers use them as marketing tools and as a way to sensitize the public for new desging routes they take, as they have always done with concept cars. Look at the F125 f.e., the S Class "of the future" and the current S Class.

Looking at the porpotions of the car, the grill or headlights, i see a alot similarities.

Hopefully the VW will get everyone excited again- the previews make it look pretty radical. I personally like the way the BMW VGT looks, yes the drawing is perhaps better, but in the video they said they were going for a look that was similar to their other production models, not something completely unrealistic and unfamiliar. I think it looks quite nice.

Couldn't agree more. They're falling into the Bangle era over-styling mess that BMW went through, but they've also got the huge corporare face which is ruining so many car brands at the minute.
