Wow, cool stuff. That Oreo was the best one, I think. Who knew they would make that much smoke?

That it will melt a golf ball sorta indicates that it does indeed get slightly hot ;)

CAMAROBOY69
That looks similar to the one they made in MythBusters.
Cool stuff, errr I mean hot stuff. :dunce:
The one they build in MB was f'ing HUGE !... Too bad they didn't have the time to align the mirrors properly...

It stated that it could get to 500-700 degrees. I wonder how long it would take to cook a steak on that thing? I guess somebody should suggest it?

Marshmellow Peep?

Can of hairspray?

Lighter fluid?

A phonebook?

Tube of toothpaste?

Bottle of catsup?

A small pillow?

Raw cookie dough?

Wig?

A flame-proof child's Halloween costume?

Someone you hate?

I have an 8" lens out of a theatrical spot light. It's totally flat on one side and about 2" thick in the middle. On a bright sunny day it will start some serious fires in grass or leaves. Ants don't even squirm - they just explode in a puff of smoke.

[edit] This is totally the best.

I wan't one NOW! If only it was sunny enough in Britain... :(

My Dad used to fry ants with a magnifying glass. Bet they stunk.

Killer death ray! I'd like to see them melt some metal either that or one of these $150 economics texts I have to buy but never use.

I heard the Atlanteans invented mirror towers, which were much hotter than the ones in Syracuse. :)

That Hootie tape went up like their credibility as artists. Although I do enjoy Darius as a cowboy in the Burger King ads.

You know, I wasn't that amazed with the design of this.

So, earlier this week when I remembered that, being a school science technician, I was aware of some items we no longer require, a plan formed...

Each of these mirror tiles is 3" square, but essentially reflective plastic. They are surplus to requirements, so are being used to test the principle. If successful, they will be replaced with glass mirrors.

Then there just happened to be a totally useless parabola on the wall of one lab. 1 metre across, 20cm deep...

1+1=2... :D

I just need a sunny day to test it now...

(if anyone wonders, there are six holes already drilled into the plastic of the parabola. I'll be inserting metal rods into them to form tripods, peaking at the focal point of the parabola so that I can mount things upon them)

I'm just testing the principle right now. Currently the tiles are stuck on with masking tape.

Assuming it works I'm going to tile the entire inside with no gaps between mirror tiles. Then burn things...

I would suggest putting.......how do you say that:irked:......not a microscope but a smaller version, just like they use in a classic detective story.......ahg I can't get the name........anyway if you know what I mean, place that "microscope" just in front, it works with me:D I use one you can just hold in your hand and then take a piece of black paper and some grass and you've got fire if your patient enough, I wonder how strong a MEGA-MICROSCOPE is:crazy: I think that'll burn much TOO:idea:

Magnifying glass.

A solar furnace like the one I'm making can reach temperatures around 1000 degrees Farenheit.

Famine, you've just become even cooler! 👍

You've gotta post pics of the destruction when it happens. But, knowing English weather, a clear, sunny day could take a while to come around...

Actually with global warming continuing at the current rate, we shoudl have Barbados competing sunlight in just 6 months!!!

Nice one Famine, See if you can do some welding with it!...........Eventually.

Wow, a more deadly Amazing Killer Solar Death Ray Gun built by Famine. This is going to be interesting.

Famine, you've just become even cooler! 👍

What you call "cool" eh:sly::crazy: Show a picture of it Famine please? I sometimes wonder how many things you build at once? You know and build practically EVERYTHING!!!!!!!

Edit: Ow man I'm dumb:dunce: The pictures are shown like 5 posts up:dunce:

Well, the prototype, which has 55 3" plastic mirrors in ropey condition, managed just over 95 degrees Celsius, as opposed to an outside temperature of 22 degrees, with half of the mirrors covered by shadow and me manually aiming it through double glazed windows.

Not half bad... Can't wait to get some proper mirrors on there and FILL the thing :D
