Analog stick or pad to steer

Analog stick. More range of subtle movements.

Moving right on the analog will let you give a certain amount of "turn right", whereas using the d-pad right, would just say "FULL RIGHT."

I guess there is a certain range of movement in the d-pad's buttons, but there's not much between barely pressing the d-pad button and fully pressing the d-pad button.

Of course I might be wrong.

When I used a pad once upon a time it was stick or nothing :)
The pad controls are horrendous and I'm shocked anybody would even contemplate using them o.o

I remember years ago using gamepads that didn't have the analog sticks at all, so you got used to it... but now it's pretty much a give-in to use the stick to steer. I'm not sure if the latest pads are even as pressure sensitive as they once were in the PSX days.

Have a good one

I know what you mean about 'full on or off'. But after 1.5yrs i've gotten fairly effective with the pad and don't know if i could make that kind of change to my driving style.

Heck, it wasn't until recently did i realize that there was an intermediate position with the 'X' (accelerator button), not totally released but not fully pressed either, kind of a high idle i guess.

Couldn't imagine using the D-Pad and face buttons for driving nowadays, it has to be stick and triggers.

I use the D-Pad because I'm used to Xbox controllers. It feels awkward to place my thumb in that spot...oh well. That's what Xbox replica controllers are for! :D

I use Triggers for (L2)brake and (R2)acc. , X for handbrake, Square and Circle for shifting. Triangle for reverse.

Analog stick, as mentioned above there's more "control" in the steering than when using the d-pad, or at least in my experience.

I use D-Pads all the way unless playing a Nascar game. Not too tough to make a gradual left hand turn with the stick!lol Worst case for me is still using the "X" for gas restricting me to an automatic transmission.

I use a wheel, but I have a couple of online friends that still use the DS3, one with pad and one with analog, and are as fast as me, sometimes faster in the TT's. We're talking top 200 in the Corvette/Nurb TT, so you can be fast with the pad and the sticks:idea:

Analog stick. With some practice (and some grip pads on the sticks), it is really amazing how precise the sticks can be for steering (left stick) and accel/brake (right stick). This setup works awesome for me.

What do you use for steering?

Left Analog stick always. Sometimes I even use the Right Analog Stick to Accelerate and Brake. It let's you be so precise with the throttle. :)

Same here 👍 ( Although I might try the trigger setup for braking and accelerating once, just to see if there's a big difference )

I use the left analog stick for steering and triggers for brake and gas. It gives you the perfect amount of control.

I steered with a wheel, but if I would play with a normal controller I would only use the stick. D-Pad steering is so... Super Nintendo.

Why don't you just reassign the buttons in the options menu? It would make it easier

I use stick for steering, L1/2 for acceleration and brake and triangle/square for gear up/down

Analog stick for steering, circle for gas, triangle for brake, L1/R1 for shifting, L2 for left foot brake ( very useful ). I can use the Dpad for steering but rarely use it nowadays, it does have pressure sensitive input but still not good enough IMO, maybe I'll try to play with sensitivity in GT5 :D

Analog stick, you can choose the steering angle using it, unlike the buttons, which you can only choose to steer at the widest angle or not to steer at all.

Some of you say that there is a difference between completely pressing the buttons and half-pressing them, I forgot if there's such difference though.

Analog. Seems like whenever I try to use the D-Pad it tells the car to swerve and take a 90 degree turn.

I've played since the PS1 days and gotten accustomed to steering with the D Pad. I tried switching to the Analog Sticks once but I couldn't get used to it, what with the sticks being so high up in the air in comparison. Not to mention, switching from left to right steering happens a LOT quicker on the D Pad than the Analog Stick. I'd probably be a faster driver with the Analog Sticks, but I've been preoccupied with other things in the game like learnign to drive with no aids, and learning about suspension and LSD settings I haven't gotten around to getting used to driving with the Analog Stick.

When I'm being lazy and using the DS3, I use the joysticks. I had used the D-pad with previous games using the tap method, but as soon as I tried the sticks with the PS3 I never went back.

I used the pad for a véry long time, changed to the left stick for steering only 1 year ago. I don't want to say one is better than the other (especially since I used the pad so long myself, and if I say so myself, wasn't bad), although I must admit my driving has improved with the sticks. You can make smoother turns.

In the end, I don't think it matters if you use the pad or stick, it's all up the person and how much he is used to it.

I race with a guy that uses the d-pad. ..we try to stay away from him

:D:tup:

Stick & buttons, have played that way since I started and am just used to it now. Did try using the triggers for braking & accelerating but it didn't feel right for me.
