Any tips for getting golds in the AMG driving school?

I agree. I found the first test to be quite passable but all the others to be borderline impossible to gold. While silver is downright easy. Although i chalk up my difficulties to using the gamepad as i've found using a wheel i'm generally quicker. Sadly.... i don't have a wheel to use with GT5 yet. [goes back to his dual shock 3] :guilty:

I use the G27 with clutch and got silver on all the beginner AMG tests...I don't see myself getting gold on them ever. Unless I practice each one for a week straight, maybe a month. I don't have the motivation for that.

You see that's what's bugging me. I went from a gold to being way off the pace across the board.

I gained a gold in the first test but every other test was a silver and quite a bit off the gold time. Any tips?

Listen to the videos and voice overs. They help out a lot.

Those tests - both beginning but especially intermediate - made me wonder just how much testing they put into determining those bronze, silver and gold time requirements, and whether there's a very narrow gap within players of different skill levels very often fall?

There's an extremely generous difference between the times required for bronze and silver on those Nordschleife times, and in all but one of the intermediate ones (and if I recall correctly it was very similar in the beginner test) I was within one or two seconds of getting silver (in the last case I got a silver with around one second to spare).
It almost made me feel like they had somehow known and magically set those silver times right in front of my nose to taunt me :p.

Those were all first attempts though, so I'm sure I can get silver on all of them with a few more tries.
Gold however is another matter entirely - gaining 6-8(?) seconds on each of those sectors might very well prove nigh impossible for me if my ~8 years of sim racing are anything to go by (I'm a consistent but unfortunately pretty slow driver, and that's something I've never managed to change by more than a small factor no matter how many laps I've put into various racing games and sims, on PC and consoles, with wheel or gamepad).

Yea, I was surprised with those times. I silver-ed all of them using a controller, and on the last one, went off the track once, and spun once too. Still got silver with 2-3 seconds to spare.

Practice!

The track and the game's physics are different from what we are used to, so more practice is what's needed.

After a number of attempts, I'm now at Gold for all three track sections at the Beginner level. It just takes some time to get used to the car and the track again.

One thing that I have noticed is a dead spot (no torque) in the AMG's engine in the middle of 3rd gear. Maybe its my imagination? So I'm downshifting into second gear in some of the tight turns to accelerate out of them a little quicker.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I found the tests with the SLS being quite easy, there's a large margin for mistakes and still get the gold. The challenges with the SL300 though are very tough indeed. You need to be extremely precise and run the track several dozens of time to determine the optimal gear/line for each turn.

So basically: practice, practice and practice.

see i actually resorted to using AT in the game as i could not get the dang thing to shift one gear at a time using the triggers. it would always jump from like 1st to 4th. since this is the default layout you can color me unimpressed with that kind of problem.... no there is no problem with my dualshock.

I mention this because i DID notice how sluggish the SL300 felt coming out of many of the corners. I just had no control over that as I was running the AT. I guess i'll need to remap the button config and give it another go.

Seeing as both of my real life cars have MT, a 5 speed Saturn SC2 and a 6 speed 2000 SLP Firehawk (yes it's seen track time), I would prefer to use MT in the game as well.

Turn your traction control off to bend into the corners quicker - and use paddle shifters - it will save you that .1 of a second which is very precious.

I prefer L1 and R1 for down/upshifting, with L2 and R2 for braking/accelerating. I never have any trouble that way selecting the proper gears. 👍

I use my sixAxis controller, I got silver on all, very easily, almost gold on two of them (0.3seconds off).

I find that because I've driven hundreds (literally, maybe even thousands) of miles on this track since GT4, I know the braking zones... My advice, practice it a few times, then just go for it!

i just spent 35 mins trying to improve to gold on the 2nd test! I find its hard to know how much you can push through the corners. I always seem to carry too much speed and run wide or to little and lose time.
i'm going to have take a takuma sato approach instead now and see how that works.

I have all golds in the 300SL and the SLS AMG events. The SLS reward is worth the time.

These were annoying, but practice an memorizing the line helped me get all golds for the first 3 tiers.

After I missed gold by .003 I took a break from the AMG Academy for a while X(

I've been 3-4 seconds short of gold on beginner sector 2, with a G27, but can't get any closer. I beat mission 34 on GT4, so the 'ring isn't new to me, but I've decided to gold all the licenses instead, then I'll go back, but now I'm stuck on IC-10 XP.

I've been waiting for someone to make this thread for a while, so thanks OP.

Turn on the racing line, I try to always keep it off but I cannot memorize the whole ring. I think it's because the scenery all looks the same. Mission 34 is the only thing keeping me from 100% on GT4.

I got golds all the way through without much trouble. You have to know the track very well to get gold, thats really important. Know your breaking points and your lines and you'll find your getting 2-5 seconds faster than gold.

Even pro drivers say you have to do well over 100 laps before you really know the track.

I beat the Gold times by seconds and on my first trys. So i found it very easy! The cars where very easy to drive. A tip is to turn off the TCS and have ABS off or lvl 1. That would help alot.

And like he said above, practice the track. The last mission with the whole lap was extremely easy, i was crashing into every car in front of me but still i managed to pull of a laptime 15 sec faster than gold time. 👍

Good luck :)

I have gold in sector 1, 2 and 3 of beginner but for the love of all I can't get gold in sector 4! 👎

Its driving me mad! I play on G25, esp for this even I use paddle shifts and no clutch, but still after lots of tries i'm about 0.2s off the pace

I think I watched the example clip like 20 times.

I just want Nordschleife in my Practice Mode!!!!!!!!!!!

i found this AMG driving school to be really fun, and in all but 1 i managed to get silver in both cars - then moved onto the next test. i reckon with a few shots at each sector i could get gold, im probably 1-3 secs off in each sectore roughly. im using the G27.

for those who are trying to make it as challenging as possible by using gear stick and clutch on the g27, perhaps use the paddle shifter, im sure you could save 1 second over a sector just on the quicker gear change the paddle's give you.

Just got gold in sector 2 in beginner, and I still don't know what I did to get faster. I saved the replay though to look at later and see. I'll try sectors 3 and 4 tomorrow.

Since the track is too long and you can't dissect the whole thing into corners, it's hard to give pointers properly. The one thing I would suggest is to know when to follow the driving line and when not to follow the driving line. It comes with practice. Think about whether a straight is coming up or a chain of corners and set up for slow in fast out or late braking. Once you start grasping where you can speed up, you'll get gold in no time. I didn't bother with the beginner AMG, but got Gold on Section 1 & 2 on Intermediate within 10 tries. It's all about smoothness and adjusting to the bumps on the track.

As others have said before me, the two best things you can do to improve your lap times are:
A) Use a racing wheel
B) Practice

When I first was exposed to the Green Hell in PGR2, I thought to myself "I will never be able to memorize braking points, entry speeds, etc. for the whole track." But after many hours on GT4, with a DualShock 2 never the less, I got a hang of it.

Now on GT5, with a wheel it is awe inspiring how much detail and feel there is of the road surface in my G25, and those many hours practicing the Ring are truly paying off.

I won't the first to say this but... it's hard to get Gold on these AMG challenges, but many of us on this forum will a test that its not impossible. It took me roughly one whole day to do the Beginner. Still working on Intermediate.

Be patient with it, experiment with different driving lines (turn off the aid), and above all else... practice.

I've Golded every Intermediate AMG challenge bar the full lap. It's gonna take a while... :(

I've got all gold on intermediate took me sometime too

Havent tried the next level

I use driving force GT with steering simulation setting and max force feed back (10) so I did turn off the traction control because my wheel had a mannetino in it (can set or unset aids in game) when the tests started.

Paddle shifters obviously will make you a lot quicker in long tracks.

You need to have high force feed back if not your reaction times are lower and that will cost you either your test or your lap time

If you are really good at countersteering turn off traction control when the test starts this only applies to wheels with mannetino's

You will get more out of the car without traction control

You need to attack the apex more for gold but you still need to get through cleanly

The final part in the intermediate level is the really really hard one

You'll see just keep aiming for gold!

Good luck
