Take a look at the ridiculously placed reverse gear on the shifter in the new Toyota 86. It it just asking to be mis-shifted in real life..

Do you mean how reverse is to the left of first? There's a gate preventing you from slamming it into reverse by mistake, so you'd have to lift the disc under the gear knob to open the gate so you can enable reverse.

Apologies for the image size.

^^gah! You beat me to it!

Yes, you have to push down to get into reverse gear. :D

Yeah, push down or lift up. Its confusing the first time you encounter it but then it makes you think why don't all cars have this feature? Saves your gearbox and your insurance premium.

erm yeah..... Such a stupid design that it has been used for god knows how many years now by just about every manufacturer in the world

I know at least one car (latest Toyota Celica) that doesn't have this gate type system, but does have an audible alarm when you select reverse. The alarm is tedious as hell, but I'm sure people would rather put up with it than slamming into the front of someone's car as they go to pull away from a junction ;)

So this is exactly like H shifter on G27, you have to press down the knob to get in the reverse gear.

Nothing weird. My old RL 350z had it a bit different too but it was next to 6th gear. Had to push down the shifter to engage reverse.

True story. When I first picked up my 350z the salesman parked it in a corner to leave it for me. So I took the keys etc and jumped in to take her home. I moved the lever over to reverse to back out the corner but it went forward. I was like oops...Tried it again because I thought I put it in 6th gear by mistake. Again it edged forward. I got confused and felt stupid lol. I tried it again and it edged forward again getting closer to the wall in front of me.

I ended up sitting in the car for like 15 minutes because I couldn't accept that I can't engage reverse. Started feeling real stupid:dopey:. Id been driving stick for years and never had this problem before...A light bulb went off in my head and I read the manual and found out you have to push down the shifter to select reverse lol. I think some BMW's are like that too.

I'm curious what you think of the dogleg gearbox as in the Euro BMW E30 M3 and many other sports cars of the time.

To get 6th gear in my car - move lever towards me and back
To get reverse - push lever down, then move it exactly the same way.

Welcome to the world of cars.

Also, locking as not GT5 related.
