The Clio V6 and base Impreza's are rivals perforamcne wise, the Clio V6 isn't a rival the Evo at all since the base Evo is close to the top spec Impreza.

The clio V6 is undoubtedly the coolest hot hatch ever. It looks stunning.

TVRKing - Never said that tehy were rivals I was talking about the impreza and evo being rivals. The reason for me mentioning that was to show that they werent necessarily biased towards the Clio V6.

Didn't the first Clio V6 have a turning circle of an oil tanker and the Mk2 the turning circle of a small cruise ship?

[EDIT] Not that it affected high speed handling.

3 point turns would be 5 point turns in the Clio V6, yes that's true and not a good thing, but while you were moving, they handled well and gave incredible feedback to the driver.

I suppose the Clio V6 is not only the coolest hot hatch, it's also the most impractical. But that makes it even cooler, cause it couldn't be turned into a softie even if you tried to. :D

Yep and also a very cheap interior (basicaly the same as a standard Clio with a few more chrome bits) and while in trainspotter mode. Did you now that only one of the air intakes behind the doors was functional, the right hand side intake (UK drivers side) was a dummy, as a result the car (in the UK) actualy sounds a lot better from the passenger seat than the drivers seat.

Practicalaty was also not a strong point, the luggage space under the bonnet (hood for all in the US) was suitable for a small squashy bag, and the only other luggage space was a net behind the seats, anything here had a tendancy to get a bit cooked.

You guys may like these, they were used for dealer training at the launch of the MK1, I've put them up on yousendit - so first ten get them (quicktime required). As far as I know these have never been used outside of Renault, so enjoy.

I've also just dug out a CD-ROM of all the technical details of the V6 Cup race car, that unfortunatly is too big for yousendit.

@TVRKing: Anything that can cover ground that quickly and which costs less than the arm and leg Porsches cost is a WRX / Evo rival... like others have said, it's not in the numbers... :)

@Scaff: Isn't lift-off oversteer (Porsche-style) scary in something with a wheelbase and weight distribution like that? I imagine it's nice and darty at 6/10ths or 7/10ths, but I've seen at least one review that said that the MkII was a handful at the limit.

Sorry but this based on your experience driving how many of these?

Do I need to apologize for being a 19-year-old american who will likely never get a chance to drive a Clio V6?

I don't pull this stuff out of my *censored*, you know. If I haven't read a review about how a car handles, I don't make any judgements on it -- I might make predictions on how it'll handle, but I won't judge it unless an article I've read has already done so.

Anyway, don't ask me for a link to the article, because I read it quite a long time ago, but apparently you and the author disagree. :indiff:

Yes without a doubt it can be scarey, the Mk2 is a much more friendly car to drive in relation to the Mk1. The original was very, very scarey on the limit and unpredicatable to say the least, as you quite rightly say the short wheelbase and weight distribution do make it a challenge. However in reality all mid-engined cars can be like this, a sudden throttle lift in any mid or rear engined car is not a good idea (also not smart in some front wheel drive cars - step forward the Pug 205 GTi).

I didn't say you pulled it out of any place, calm down it was said in jest, if it did not come across that way I apologise.

However yes I would disagree with the author of that particular piece (as would the authors of a lot of other pieces on the car), its not an easy car to drive on the limit at all, however the Mk2 was certainly far from neutered.

IIRC when it was last included in a large group test in Evo it came third.

Answering - but not on behold of Scaff or Niky -

Isn't "scary" a good thing ?... If I had a performance car like the Clio V6 (or a Porsche for that matter), I'd want it to be scary. Like Tiff said about the GT when he drove it, he felt like it was too nice, too soft and too "usable". He was looking for a bit more edge overall.. (Which is exactly why I prefer older 911s to newer ones...)

like the one guy said, there's no way in hell an american will EVER see the likes of a Clio over here. we got sent the 9 and 19, americanized...they flopped.

i was a little kid when the non german European descent autos wer killed off in the US, and the Japanese were coming in in droves. the first foreign car dealership I ever saw was at something like age 4 or 5...and that was the Topyota dealership, and I remember thinking "Hey, we got a new kinda car". I didn't know that the Rabbit Westmmoreland, toyotas, and the b2000 that my dad bought were foreign for YEARS.

argue all you like about it's virtues, but even CEO Carlos Goshen is only just thinking about trying to re-eneter the american market. I'd rather have a 206 or 306/7 over here, personally, but it looked to me, back when I bought GT2 (which is the ONLY way I'll ever drive anything other than a US midsized front drive sedan), that renault had got it's act together.

have fun with your Clios in other markets. the US car market, even for our own products, is dead except for muscle cars.
