I have a weird issue with MB, BMW and Audi, and also Porsche, so I guess all the main German marques. I know many of them are awesome cars, and I have many favourites, though most of these are historic models. The issue I have nowadays, and I admit it must be just me, is that I find it so hard to tell the models apart, with one or two notable exceptions.
Look at any other car maker and each model *usually* has quite distinct styling, but I find with German makers so many models look very very similar, just longer, shorter, 4 doors, 2 doors, and so many iterations of what seems to essentially be the same car. Then every year or two they change them. Very slightly. So you have endless revisions of a lot of very similar looking models.
There's a very cool thread in these forums called "What did you see today" where people post pics of cool cars they saw recently. I spent some time working though that (some of the older pics are inevitably expired now) but each time I came to Mercedes CL-something or BMW M-something else, I just kinda switched off. I just don't get it, and I think a lot of them are stylistically very dry and boring too.
I'm not bashing German car makers, far from it, like I said, show me a Porsche 959 or a Mercedes 300SL, or a Z8 or an 82 Sport Quattro and i'll giggle like a schoolgirl, they are incredible, awe-inspiring cars. I guess I am an aesthete though, and get far more from the looks and presence of a car leaping out at me and slapping me around the face than I do from a bunch of numbers. Names for cars are nice sometimes too.
And yet anyone who looked at you drive down the road would think you were an ordinary guy with an Audi estate car.
