Did you mean; change gear right before you're executing a driving maneuver causing you to loose control of the car and crash, or causing a need to hit the brakes and loose all excitement from the driving experience?

In the real world the differences between automatic and manual are becoming blurred. The Porsche PDK is an automatic, double clutch transmission which can shift faster than a human and is a true double clutch transmission not a torque converter. One clutch handles 1,3,5, and 7 and the other 2,4, and 6. The car can shift up or down almost instantly because the alternate gears are already engaged.
The driver can select between sequential manual shifting using paddles or an automatic with different levels of aggressiveness in the shift points.
The fully automatic mode is faster from 0 to 100kmh because it incorporates a launch control mechanism which both applies power more smoothly and hits the shift point accurately in the low gears. In high powered cars it is very difficult to hit the shift from 1st to 2nd accurately off the line.
It is my understanding the the paddle controlled PDK transmissions produces lower lap times at Nurburgring than the manual transmission on a Turbo.
Personally I find auto better than manual because you won't lose precious seconds mistakenly changing gear and you get maximum output
Unless you have aids all off and you don't have a 4wd car auto is the way to go

When using the DS3, I employ X for upshifts and square for downshifts. I think it's more ergonomical than using square/circle buttons.Nonsense, why would auto be better with ds3?
Put throttle and brake on L2 and R2. Throttle and brake with your index fingers. Use your thumb to shift up with circle and shift down with square.
That's it. It's so simple..
And surely you're faster with manual with a DS3
Race cars are never, ever automatic. I think most automatic cars also have a power restrictor on them. Plus auto doesn't work in real life like it does in the game, in real life you shift way before the redline.
