Auto or Manual?

Are you talking about real life or in Gran Turismo 3?

I don't have my license yet, so I have never drifted in real life. In Gran Turismo 3 though, I use automatic. Could someone drift with an automatic in real life?

Oh, and welcome to GTPlanet.net Forums :)

Either, matters on the track, some require some downshifting sometimes. Complex string through the noguls, other than that auto works fine most of the time.

And WELCOME ABOARD!!!!!

i use manual in GT3 and real life
drifting auto in real life is quite possible but not as fun

Personally, I like using auto in GT2 coz I can concentrate on feinting and controlling my drift angle rather than worry about downshifting.

After all, there is no clutch, you can't really do an authentic 'shift lock' or clutch-kick anyway...so it doesn't really matter whether u use auto or manual. That's my opinion at least

Some purists may differ, though :D

i hate driving automatic cars in real life, but i use auto on GT3 :D (both my cars are 5-speed man..)

Manual. I love to be able to control everything about my drift, and I like shifting for some reason. For real life, I'll be in an automatic because the area i live in has many hills.

im slowly switching over to manual, but i perform some of my best drifts using automatic...and yes, people can drift auto in real life. at a drift competition in hawaii an automatic camaro took first place :O

to do real drifts you need a car that can lay the power down right when you need it and power to come off instantly. an automatic dosen't really do that so well. you can do big power slides if you have an automatic car that has enough tourque but it isn't practical, and its nearly impossible to be precise. my rx7 is a manual, thats the only way to go man. and if you thgink drifting in gt3 is a rush, **** son! you have to do it for real

As for me, I drift in an automatic. The game + drift is new to me.

INTRO
A retired gamer I am my friend lent me his GT3 urging me to learn how to play and become good to compete with him since he needs a challenger. Now here i am, struggling to earn the licenses!! I want to get gold medals but it's so hard. It's time for a break from that. I wanna learn how to drift.

My first drift-tuned car(from gamefaqs.com) was a Nissan 1800KK. Whoa! the car spins out too much and i can't control it. Than i discovered this forum where I looked up Sheron's drift-setting cars. I chose Sheron's Nissan Silvia15 setting and gave it a try. Reason why i chose the car is cuzz i like the way it looks:). How was it? It was much easier than the other car i had, I can't really drift though. It's so hard but i'm still gonna put more time into it. It's fun.

So my question to you guys now, how long did it take you guys to learn how to drift well+? Are licenses required to learn how to drift( i'm gussin no but could be wrong )?

I did all the license tests when I first got the game so I was already done with that when I started drifting. I think it would probably help to go through the license tests though because it'll help you learn which lines to take etc. It took me a while to get to the point where I could drift consistently...I still mess up and end up spinning out sometimes, but I've been getting a lot better lately. Stick with it..you'll get it.:)

I drift in gt3 w/ an automatic. Honestly I don't see the point in drifting w/ manual unless u could use a clutch and even if u did have a clutch in gt3 its still not realistic enough because it wouldn't have a release point.

Looks like quite a number of pple on this forum feel the same way...

BTW, have any of u played Sierra's Viper Racing before? I'm not sure about the physics modelling, but it sure as h3ll is one of the best sims for the PC, it even has a clutch modelled and possibly one of the best replay telemetry in 1998...notwithstanding GT2 being run on connectix VGS :D

For me i grip race strictly with manual transmissions but when it comes to drift for the gutless slow underpowered heaps of junk like the shingo edition trueno i use manual , but when i jump into a high horepower torque monster i still prefer the good ol automatic its lazy and easy nuff said

R34, i'm telling you, they never will, because for 1, if there was a clutch involved they have to make a clutch foot peddle for the steering wheels, and I don't know if you've been to an arcade latley, but games like Ferrari Challenge and such, usually have broken clutch pedles because a video game one isn't designed to take the stress of a REAL one.

i agree if they make wheels with clutches, they will be very expensive because they would have to make them extra strong.

the clutch would be getting constantly mashed

Maybe the real racing organisations (ala the F1 organisers) will lose all their income if a really realistic racing sim was created, complete with a race clutch and all the other driving goodies...

Maybe people will realize how boring F1 and Nascar are and stop watching THOSE ones. As for rallying, drifting, etc, there's nothing like the smell of burning kevlar & rubber, the sport will always live on! =)

It took me six months of playing gT3 with a manual before i could do a perfect drift. It was well worth the time. Drifting with manuals makes it more exciting (And I swear I go faster)

yeah manual will make you go alot faster... a couple of seconds in most cases... bu there are people out there who are dam fast on auto...
