CCYoshi's 'Uncreative Title' Montreal Race Report:
GTPF1 S7 Grand Prix of Montreal Champion: Not Blake!
GTPF1 S7 Grand Prix of Montreal Champion: Mason, BMW
BMW's back, baby! After a ridiculous pile of DNFs by both Mason and Domingues the BMW Sauber hits its stride with a brilliant 1-3 finish. Both drivers led and Mason made a great charge from midfield and a brilliant pass (again) to win the race!
Silver Medal: Bruce McLaren, McLaren
Led for forever, but two crucial mistakes prevented him from taking home the trophy. He encountered gearbox issues coming into the pits that bogged down the car for a couple seconds. These seconds allowed Mason to get closer to him, until he was passed in the waning laps of the race, denying McLaren a win. Still, his 3rd podium of the year!
Bronze Medal: Domingues, BMW
Started in the points and stayed there most of the race in a relatively error-free race. The mechanics hampered him again with an extremely hilarious, and slow, pitstop that might have meant the difference between 10 points and 6. Still, getting to the finish is quite the accomplishment this season...
On the Board:
4th: Horton, McLaren (Finished where he started. Gains points in the chase for the championship.
5th: Haswell, Renault (Had a poor stop, but otherwise a slow race up the field from 13th. Passed Kawasie on the last lap, setting the fast lap.)
6th: Kawasie, Super Aguri (Made a slight mistake in the closing stages and lost precious seconds. Yet another would've, could've, should've, but still picked up 3 points more than his total from the last 5 races)
7th: Smith, Midland (The underdog driver clawed his way back into the points after a poor stop, until a truly nightmare pitstop dropped him a few ranks.)
8th: Orchard, Red Bull (Rookie adds a point to his total of 5.)
Long Walks Back to the Garage:
Rather clean race this time.
Dubois (Lap 31): Front wing flew off and cut a tire, sending the Aguri spearing off into a wall. Ties Domingues with 5 DNFs.
Hutchinson (Lap 36): Distracted by the rabid fans in the crowd and went for a nature hike off the road and eventually back to the pits ('cept, y'know, on foot).
'Unintentional Comedy' Award: The mechanics!
It was a fine day for pitstops - let's look at the numbers:
*Toro Rosso pulled Paajanen in completely off strategy out of boredom - why else would he pit on lap 1.
*Midland called both it's cars in on lap 16 - luckily they were far enough apart, although the drivers were certainly sweating for a bit!
*Lap 18 saw the Red Bull and Honda crews working it out with double pit stops, barely getting the box clear before the next driver pulled in.
*Ferrari started us off with an 18 second pit stop on lap 23 on Beyens (who was leading!).
*Toro Rosso continues the 'Hey, let's see if we can get driver 1 out before 2 comes in' trend of pitting on the same lap.
*Davidson misses the pit box and contributes to a 14+ second stop on lap 32, adding to a dismal race.
*Midland realizes that it copied Smith's race plan over Keller's by accident, which is why they both pit together AGAIN on lap 34.
*Championship leader Haswell is sorely dissapointed by the Renault's crew setting of a new pit record for the race, knocking off Beyens's stop by 1/12th of a second.
*Domingues pulls into the pits from the lead and the mechanics, having failed to make his car fail, complete a lightning quick 21-second stop! Smith comes in right after he leaves, and Midland is happy to one-up the BMW crew with a 21 and 1/3 second stop, culminating in Smith stalling and adding on 3 seconds.
*Paajanen's tire a splode on lap 59 also.
Defining Moment: "The Pass II", Lap 67/70
"McLaren (P1) is half asleep and realises too late that Mason is overtaking!"
Never let your guard down...
