Beater or Sleeper? GT6 Car of the Week Thread

An update on the Formula E ESL event.

The event will be streamed on Twitch on ESL_Event.

The stream should be going live at 12AM GMT time, I'll be running at Long Beach East which is the 4th race on the card.

No pressure, just the ESL community watching and possibly racing against genuine Formula E drivers, no pressure at all.

Come on Vic, fighter spirit! It's one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, testing your mettle against proper racing drivers as well as your closest friends and fellow virtual racers... Welcome that pressure, and turn it into tenacity. Do your best! :)👍

As for me, I think I'll sit tonight's racing session out; I haven't had much practice with the Streamliner, but the very little I had with it hasn't filled me with confidence. So, I shall act as a spectator and watch all the madness unfold during the Twitch stream instead. It should be interesting to see what it's like being Brad "Oklahoma's Asphalt Slicker" McClaren...

So in the end, our team Apex Racing finished 2nd with me coming 3rd in my race at Long Beach. :D

We were up against some incredibly quick stock car racers ( Sound Familiar? :sly:) and we held on strong.

Was I nervous? I was starting to shake as soon as I was invited to the lobby for the race, but I didn't buckle and keep my foot to the floor. :)

Looking forward to relaxing tonight with you guys and the Streamliner.

It's a bit complex, but here:

  1. With your PS3 off, hold down the power button so it turns on and off again.
  2. Hold the power button down again. You will hear two single beeps and a double beep. Let go of the power button after the double beep.
  3. In the menu that comes up, choose Rebuild Database. It takes time but it sorts the files and cleans up stray folders.
  4. Repeat once every two months.

Thanks for this, it didn't take all that long for mine (less than 10 minutes) so I assume my PS3 wasn't too badly fragged. Thanks again!

Cheers

A remedy, eh? Hmm... You're picking the car?

Congratulations McClarenDesign!

Yeah, sorry about that. I hadn't intended on it until I realized it'd probably be too late to get a reply. That being said, I think this week's selection has a little bit of something for everyone.

It's the 1969 Isuzu Bellett GT-R!

Kids-These-Days
It's Godzilla!

No, it isn't. But it isn't far off. It just needs a little radiation and a two-hour long fight with Mothra.

And once again, @Vic Reign93 is on top of the weekly leaderboards, disposing of Spa in only 2:09.406, or roughly 25 seconds faster than me. This week's "Playing With TTs!" event is at Virginia International Raceway, though sadly without the iconic Oak Tree, courtesy of GTP_GTRacer22, a.k.a. @GTRacer22 .

Oh, almost forgot...

Where's the fun in that? I pride myself on the torture these people endure. It's a gift.

Well, considering that you allowed Vic to torture us with the Auto Union, I'd say that you still got the gift of punishment.

Fortunately, this week should be a very nice, calm venture through another simple but spunky JDM gem. Not quite a Skyline, but the Bellett does have the cool factor on its side... Even if Isuzu has long since given up on road cars.

Wow, thanks! :D Although, it's quite bumpy if I recall correctly. I could re-upload it without the bumps if you would like. :)

If we were running the previous pick which was the Auto Union Streamliner, I'd probably ask for the smooth version, But I think we'll manage with a few bumps in the Isuzu.

Well to be fair, I was the one who REALLY cranked up the levels of torture last week. :mischievous:

But enough about me being ever so slightly sadist, it's time for another 2 car review. :)

(PT) Criusing for an (AU) bruising.

Let's throw ourselves into the deep world of car culture, we see many forms of car culture everyday, from the plain jane runabouts, to high end automotive pornography, to sleepers of the streets, to loud as hell eye sores. :P

And then we get to THAT corner of the culture, the oddballs.

Many cars from different countries, different eras have ended up here for being one of few things

Too far ahead of its time.
Too different to the status quo of its time.
Too dangerous.
Too ugly.
Too uncool.

And in this group we find our first car for today, the 00' Chrysler PT Criuser.

Now incase you're not up to speed as to why lots of people don't like the PT Criuser let me break it down.

Back in the early 2000's, Chrysler was going through a Retro phase with both the PT Criuser and Prowler and unlike the retro styled Ford Mustang that debuted a few years later, the PT didn't do a brilliant job in the looks department.

So it's not a looker and the convertible versions isn't much better either, so is it quick?

The one we have is the non turbo 2.4 litre 4 cylinder that makes around 150hp ( fun fact: The Chrysler Neon never came equipped with this engine in non turbo form.) and that engine sends the power to the front via a 5 speed manual gearbox (there was a 4 speed auto option so we got lucky here. :scared:).

We struggled to get past 120mph due to the not so great aerodynamics and the engine would be running out of power quite abit before redline.

So with all that considered you'd be forgiven for thinking that the handling wasn't much cop either.

Here's where the PT surprised me, it's actually not terrible at handling, courtesy of a curbweight of 1,270kg and a 57-43 weight distribution making the PT surprisingly responsive. :odd:

The gearbox is also quite short too so you can use them all to the fullest.

As crazy as it might sound, if you can live with the fact that the PT is ugly as sin, it's a relatively inexpensive choice to start early on with and can do quite well.

Shame we didn't get the Turbo'd GT Criuser to work with.

Verdict: Sleeper ;)👍

And now we wind the clocks back almost 80 years to our next car, The 1937 Audi Auto Union Type C Streamliner.

The Type C like its predecessors, the Type A and Type B ran supercharged V16 engines from as low as 4.4 litres in the Type A all the way up to 6 litres with boost pressure going up too in the Type C.

The Streamliner version was originally built for the AVUS race track in Germany which used the Autobahn and a heavily banked turn at one end of the track.

How heavy? Try 43 degrees, no wonder it was nicknamed "The wall of death".:eek:

For context, Daytona's banking is around 31 degrees and Indianapolis has around 11 degrees of banking.

Back to the Streamliner, like its Grand Prix counterparts, they were tricky to drive, but quick, Drivers inducing wheelspin at over 100mph wasn't uncommon.

Long before his tragic speed attempt, Rosemeyer drove a near 550hp version around the Nurburgring in a single gear to prove the engines flexibility and low down torque. 👍

The car we have is also very tricky to drive fast and it will fight you all the way and if it wins at the wrong time, you could end up like this...

But if you can tame this monster, it will reward you with monstrous speed as it'll nearly hit 200mph at Spa.

Now the verdict in this case will vary depending on the drivers ability to tame it, So for me it's a Sleeper. ;)👍

Well he'll do well to imitate me on picking a sadistic choice for us. :mischievous:

I still think I did too good of a job in my case. :D

No, the Bellett is an enjoyable car at all speeds. The Auto Union, on the other hand, is scary even in first gear, like a distant and grumpy German relative of the TVR Cerbera Speed 12. And the Speed 12 can turn better than the AU does, which is shocking to say the least...

The most annoying thing I may find in the Bellett is a rather tame engine response, but there is only so much you can do with roughly 120 horsepower...

The Izuzu Bellett 1600 GT-R is quite speedy when tuned to 490 PP I set a time of 2:48.780 on Circuito di Roma on a rolling start it also sticks to the road in corners I liked driving it :)

I Also filmed on potato cam of me racing the Izuzu against 500-600 PP AI cars on Matterhorn Rotenboden
edit: I did mess up a couple times and sorry Dodge Challenger for cutting that corner to get past you :D

106 mph down the front straight. Couldn't crack the 1:36 barrier, but I'm sure someone here could :D

Cars within 0.500 seconds:

1:36.549 - 364 - Daihatsu Storia X4 '00
1:36.627 - 339 - Nissan Exa Canopy L.A.Version Type S '88
1:36.652 - 349 - Fiat Punto HGT Abarth '00
1:36.668 - 338 - Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale '63
1:36.669 - 348 - Peugeot 106 Rallye '03
1:36.723 - 342 - Isuzu 117Coupé '68
1:36.839 - 349 - Isuzu Piazza XE '81
1:36.842 - 348 - Toyota Celica 1600GT (TA22) '70
1:36.918 - 343 - Mini Cooper '02
1:36.918 - 344 - Renault R8 Gordini '66
1:37.019 - 347 - Isuzu Bellett 1600 GT-R '69
1:37.168 - 352 - Peugeot 307 CC Premium AVN '04
1:37.215 - 351 - Mitsubishi Galant GTO MR '70
1:37.284 - 342 - Toyota Vitz RS 1.5 '00
1:37.452 - 334 - Opel Tigra 1.6i '99

It seems the little Isuzu is quicker around this track than the Mitsubishi Galant GTO MR '70, but slightly slower than the Renault R8 Gordini '66 and Toyota Celica 1600GT (TA22) '70. And wait. What's that? Another Isuzu? Wait. TWO Isuzu's?! That's right. Both the Piazza XE '81 and 117Coupé '68 are faster than this weeks' car, although barely.

It's been about 9 months since I've driven this car, maybe I'll give it another go sometime this week and go for 1:36.xxx
