the only real way to separate the girls from women is to separate my favorites into two categories: artists who write their own songs, and artists who don't.

my Favorites from the Former:
Katy Perry
Sara Barrilles
Amy Winehouse
Lily Allen
Brandi Carlile
Leona Lewis
Ingrid Michaelson
Amy McDonald
Amy Lee
Brett Anderson (Lead Singer For The Donnas)
Brody Dalle (Lead Singer For The Distillers)
Ann Wilson
Pink
Mariah Carey
Anna Nalick

and for the Latter:
Jessica Simpson
Celine Dion
Janis Joplin> (two of the greatest female rock singers of all time, and they
Grace Slick> both were in their prime at the SAME TIME!)
Christina Aguilara

I think that's it.:)

Amy Lee?? Soul? Mehhh. Now I love powerful female-fronted rock/metal, but Evanesence is a complete joke. Tarja is better, Cristina Scabbia is better, Sharon den Adel is better, the list goes on.

If anyone is like Janis Joplin, it's Joss Stone.

Im gonna go for a completely different set (just to be different):
1. Lata Mangeshkar --over 6o years of indian playback and still voice of an angel.
2. Asha Bhosle young sister of the above, ditto
3. Madonna --reinvents herself time and again, what a powerful performer

If you are not familiar with the first two then I suggest doing a goole search or better still search Youtube.

So many great female bands out there, my top three favorite are:

1. Kim Wilde - (Cambodia, Kids in America)
2. Cindy Lauper - (Girls Just Want to Have Fun, She Bop)
3. Blondie - (Heart of Glass, Rapture)

I also like Donna Matthews from the band Elastica.

Man... Tough question... Me in rock and roll Stevie Nicks, the B52's female combo, and Amy Lee.... J pop and Rock.. Aya Hirano, Yui Horie, and Asami Sanada... I'm not a huge Rhianna or Beyonce fan......

Nicks has such a beautiful voice after all these years... B52s female duo is still great and entertaining... Amy Lee.. such a strong voice and is great to sit back and listen by her own or with Evanesence. The three Seiyus are something else.. Hirano is a young jpop/jrock talent that has a very distinctive voice... Yui Horie is so freaking cute when singing that its totally awesome.. and Sanada with her singing voice is great too.. she's the oldest out of the three. --- Randy

Can I add a mexican new one that's been sounding quite good lately? It may not be the best there is but heck, most of them girls have already been mentioned.

Ximena Sariñana:

Also, Hem's Sally Ellison's voice might very well be the most angelical voice I've ever heard.

As to obscure japanese dream pop, Spangle Call Lilli Line's Kana Otsubo is way, way good.

also, amazed that no one has mentioned them already (or so I think), but Goldfrapp anyone? how about some Moloko? Hooverphonic? or even Mai Yamane? They are way good in ther raspy, alcoholic voice tone.

also, cute that someone mentioned Metric's Emily Haynes...

Got one to add in the same vein as Susan Tedeschi.
Google up a young lady named Ana Popovic. She's been on the blues scene for a long while now.
The girl can burn down a guitar!
And she has this "voice". I now know why Ulysses was drawn to the sirens...

Honorable Mentions: Sarah Brightman, つじあやの, 吉田美和(Dreams Come True), Sheryl Crow, Aimee Mann, Alison Krauss, Avril Lavigne(if she really writes), Chrissie Hynde(Pretenders), Emily Haines(Metric), Lauryn Hill(Fugees), Mariah Carey, Tammi Terrell, Whitney Houston, KT Tunstall(really wanna see her show), Natalie Merchant(10,000 Maniacs).

My All-Time Pics: Heart, Karen Carpenter, Tiffany.

More recently, I have liked Pink. I also enjoy Black Eyed Peas, Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Plenty of good mentions in this thread. Billie Holiday though, I can not stand hear voice. Also plenty of names I didn't list, because they are out of "my" style at this time. Gloria Estefan, Diana Krall, Dixie Chicks, etc. Some just didn't have the consistency like Jewel, Liz Phair, Suzanne Vega, etc. Damn shame.

Artist? as in best voice? best singer/song writer?

PJ Harvey
Beth Orton
Sharon O
Amanda Palmer
Kim Deal

Karen-O from the Yeah Yeah Yeah's has a brilliant voice and is very passionate about music.

Maps is easily their most powerful track.

Oh post once in a not car related thread:

Tend to listen a lot to:
Ani Difranco (e.g. untouchable face, back back back, Freak show, etc...)
PJ Harvey
Suzanne Vega
Sarah Vaughan
....
But also like more recent women, but only know them from their hit singles:
Katie Perry, Colbie Caillat, Lady Linn, Amy MacDonald

In groups: Skunk Anansie, The Breathers, Feist, Throwing Muses...

There are a lot of good female artists out there IMHO.
