Something you won't mind crashing for when you do and which doesn't have enough power to kill you.

Avoid the things teenagers usually drive as teenagers usually crash and these cars are a higher insurance risk as a result (regardless of the insurance group or engine size). Pick something your gran would drive - it's even easier to not mind crashing something you really dislike.

Or a "classic" (something twice your age and crap). Same reasons.

Since you live in the UK, the usual suspects (to semi-counter Famine's suggestion, though the Yaris and Micra are suitably granny-ish): Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa (if you must), Renault Clio, Peugeot 206, Chicken Paxo/C2, Toyota Yaris, Nissan Micra, etc etc etc.

Something with a tiny engine that's not too horrific to insure, and not too cool that you'll be taxiing your mates around all the time, acting like dicks and distracting you from the business of driving safely.

That's both the boring answer and the good answer, since it's your first car anyway and whatever you get, no matter how rubbish, is still better than no car at all 👍

Vauxhall Vectra? It's a little bigger than what's been suggested so far - don't know too much about Vauxhalls but a plain 'ole sedan would do the trick nicely for a first car.

Not under any circumstances. Also, spot the lie in the advert:

modified ... cheap on insurance

Never buy a car someone else has modified unless you understand what the modifications are and how to do them yourself - and if it has a modification you understand and could do but wouldn't, run a mile.

That notwithstanding, no-one's suggested a 106 for very, very good reasons.

Yep. It's a strokeface Fiesta. Completely unremarkable motoring - which has a great deal to recommend it, particularly for new drivers.

I concur. Excellent first car says I, since I had one for the first 6.5 years of my motoring life. And honestly, it's the second best car I've owned. Utterly reliable, fun to drive, not too fast and simple and cheap to fix. If the OP finds a non-rusty one it's a great choice.

Interestingly, I know the owner of that blue Mini in Kent, so I can at least confirm that it's a genuine sale and a well looked-after car.

Got a quote for insurance,3908pound

That's a lot of money! How much would it take to insure one of the 1275 Minis? I personally dream about owning an original Mini. it would probably be a great first car for a petrolhead.

Try looking for a 1.3 8v or the 1.25 16v - they're lower insurance groups. Mine was a 1.3. Yeah, it's not quick, but it'll do mid-40s to the gallon, cost less to insure, and still handles as well as the 1.4 to most intents and purposes.

Edit: also, if you're getting quotes that high, I'd seriously suggest going for something with a 1.0 engine. VW Lupo, Nissan Micra, Daihatsu Cuore etc.

I got my eye on these sexy Mini's now.:)

Fiesta is a great choice.

I'll put my two cents in. This will be much like anything else you can read here.

Your first car isn't about getting something fast, pretty, or historic. It's about the new freedoms and responsibilities.

The best first car is one that will allow you to learn about the freedoms and responsibilities with the least risk to yourself, others, and your (or your parent's) wallet.

Driving pleasure and learning about driving dynamics can wait.

A old Volvo. I got a 1986 Volvo 240 dl for my first car and still drive it. Really buy any Volvo before Ford took over. They are safe and extremely reliable.

Oh, we can do better than that. Try things kids don't drive that have already hit their depreciation cap and have significant platform and parts sharing (to make repairs cheap).

Like these. You'll get ten times as much car for half as much money and the insurance shouldn't be silly (though insurance is often a die roll anyway).

Or this.

The further outside the box you can think, the more likely you are to get a bargain that's not as heavy on insurance. Even try a reasonably-priced car...

Christ on a bike. I know insurance is expensive but those seem ridiculous.

Provided quotes for the stuff Famine mentioned come out cheaper, I'd look down those alleys as far as cars go. Liana is good thinking-outside-the-box, also try Daewoos, Kias, Hyundais, Skoda Fabias/Felicias, Suzukis, and so-on. Something that old biddies would drive.

You can't often tell what cars will generate what premiums. Except that modified hatchbacks will cost you ten times their value (and then some). But your giant FIAT estate full of toys has attracted a quote similar to a Daismegginghatsu Cusmeggingore - in no way should they be comparable cars!

That aside, with quotes like that do you actually live inside a prison in a nuclear power station on an Indian burial ground, or in an area known for being on fire during biological warfare?

This. Old 340 or 360 should be plenty of fun, yet safe and relatively fuel-saving motoring.

It's Huddersfield, so all of the above.

Lol its a mixed scene really, you got the quite twisty country roads that go for miles but then theres the centre, dont get me started on how busy that is.
