I had the most fun with GTA3.

For me that game had the highest replay value, but times have changed a lot. I probably enjoyed GTA3 more because I was younger and had the time for it. As far as game quality goes, San Andreas beats the pants off the competition.

I'm judging on what the games meant to me :

GTA3
GTA1
GTA San Andreas
GTA Vice City
GTA1 London
(didn't play GTA2)

I've decided, now that I've played each game adequately, that Vice City is my favourite of the GTA's. The main character is better, the whole Druglord/Kingpin storyline appeals to me personally, the missions and different people in the city are fun, the things you can do, the mansion ... it's a very good game. The smaller map actually doesn't let it down. Playing lots of San Andreas, I actually consider the Vice City map to be somewhat of a relief.

1. Vice City
2. GTA 3 and San Andreas (Tie)
4. GTA 2
5. GTA 1
6. GTA: London 1969

I haven't played GTA:SA ...

However, of the rest, I'd choose Vice City ... But that's because GTA:3 had major issues on PC :p

another change to my vote

i ave played sa to death now. i have bugs everywhere on it and its just so boring now.... but i never get bored on gta3 its just so good...... ok sa has almost everything that i wanted it to have but it just has not got gta3...... if that makes sense....

be careful what you wish for, you just might get it...

SA takes so long to finish, I've only played through once which has kept me from starting a new game.

Besides the glitches (which don't really bother me)-- the only one that affects gameplay is the gym glitch and I never go to the Gym anyway-- who needs muscles when you have a good weapon.

I still must rank the stories-- III, VC, & SA (in that order)-- VC is still my favorite of the games-- it has the HUnter and PCJ and because they did such a good job of capturing 1986-- time is frozen in that game-- it always feels like the 80s in that game.

SA's music didn't do anything for me-- there are some good songs but it doesn't "feel" like 92 to me unless you hear some more of the famous bands back then-- Nirvana, Metalica, B-52s (how can you not have "Love Shack" in 1992), etc..

But that is just my opinion.....

yeah true vc does deffinatly feel in the 80s where as if you put sa infront of some old person who doesnt know when it was set he probly couldnt tell you.... wierd expanation

San Andreas in every way. Story is better than any other, characters are better, the world you play in is better, gameplay feels better... everything. Can't wait for GTA4.

Other than the music, San Andreas in every way. I like the music in Vice city more.

Storywise, all games have their high's and low's. I think I prefer playing through GTA 3 better, it's a massive nostalgia trip playing it, seeing as Blake and I fell in love with GTA 3 the moment it hit our PS2's. GTA 3 was the game of games when it came out, I think I got more in-game time in that than any other of the games. Vice City kept the GTA feel really well, and was another massive success. San Andreas just lost the GTA feel when it changed the gameplay and story-type.

I'm not prejudice, but San Andreas shouldn't have incorporated the whole black gangster theme. The GTA feel is more mafia-related than anything else really. Don't get me wrong, San Andreas was a good, enjoyable game, but it didn't feel like the other GTA's.

Anyway, I have a sudden urge to get back my copy of GTA 3 and play that through again.

For me it would be:
Gta:Sa just because there was so much to do
Gta:Vc because i loved the vibrance of the game and vice city for me is pretty close to san andreas, The missions for this one were so much fun and i think Vercetti was a much better character than Carl.
Gta3: only im ranking it higher than the other playstation gtas is because ive never played any other gta s, but i didnt like this game.

I disagree with you about the black gangster theme. In GTA they never really had a focus on any gang, as a matter of fact in the original GTA you were just a loner working for different gangs at a time. This meant russians, yakuza, mafia and many others. In GTA2 you could even work for a hare krishna gang, haha.

In GTA3 the focus wasn't really on mafia either except for in the beginning, 2 gangs were similar to the mafia for all I can remember (its a while ago that I played it). VC was obviously pretty much influenced by the movies Scarface (the Pacino one) and Carlito's way (also Pacino)... which weren't mafia movies either. Now in GTA:SA you play as a person in a black gang, which is a first time indeed, but all other, different type of gangs are still there. You still have mafiosi, yakuza, latino gangs... and more.

The only game I played so far with a real mafia feeling was... Mafia.... yeah and Gangsters: Organized Crime, but that game blows.

By the way I rank em like this:

1. San Andreas, the very best for obvious reasons. I didn't mind the music either, since I like hiphop (though I'm not really into westcoast gangsta rap).

2. Vice City, this feels like an enormous improvement over GTA3, the city looks so much better and it has more of a story to it. The city feels smaller than the one in GTA3 though.

3. GTA2.... though the graphics were dated, the missions were probably the most crazy ones of any GTA game ever. It was very hard to stay alive towards the end too...

4. GTA3... great game, but I liked the world in GTA2 better. Of course we all waited for GTA in 3D, but it took me a while to actually like the game other than just messing around.

5. The game was controversial and had a great sense of freedom when compared to other games back then. Though the gameplay had yet to be fine-tuned. Dying after 1 bullet without being able to save in the middle of a game (PS1 version) was frustrating to me. Screwing around slaughtering random people was probably the most fun I got out of this game.

Never played GTA: London, but it's probably on par with GTA1.

Is that Mafia any good for ps2 ? i played it for pc and i didn't like it much.

The PC version is a lot better than the PS2 game. How long did you play it? The first couple of missions weren't that much fun, but once you got into the game it was really a great game. I felt much more involved with the story in Mafia than with any GTA game before San Andreas came out. I'd definitely have to advise you to give Mafia another try if you only did a couple of missions in that game before giving up on it.

Mafia's a good game, but sometime's the gameplay gets irritating. Not as irritating as The Getaway, though.

In reply to smellysocks12: First of all, I'm obviously talking about GTA 3 onwards. Secondly, I wasn't saying that GTA 3 and Vice City were focused on the Mafia, I said that they both had a mafia-orientated feel and approach. This does not mean that the games revolved around the Mafia.

GTA 3 was all about the New York/New Jersey underground, organised-crime world. This underground and the feel of it was very much established by the Italian-American Mafia. Yes, in GTA you were able to work for a number of gangs, but the underworld feel was there, and this underworld was generally established by the Mafia.

Vice City was a completely different setting. It was the 80's, and I realised it was barely Mafia-orientated at all, but the underground crimeworld scene was very predominant and present in Vice City. You work your way through a bunch of Cocaine Kingpins until you hit the jackpot and take over Vice City.

The world I should have used was Underground, rather than Mafia, but I was using that term loosely.

San Andreas didn't have the same underground feel as the previous two games. It was more of a gang-banger than anything else. Yes, you do get through working with the Triads, etc, but the OGF are predominant and Los Santos, and even parts of San Fierro, are filled with Latino or African-American gangbangers. The feel wasn't there.

San Andreas was a very enjoyable game, and I still play it now, but I can't connect it to the previous two GTA's very well, because I believe it was much less like the others.

I hope you understand what I'm trying to say now.

u know what i hate about gta. The fact that its so fast you can get anywhere really fast. See now when i play other games and i can't run as fast as carl or i can't drive cars or they go to slow i just get irritated and give up on the game. Seeing the guy im playing lightly joggin instead of sprinting his ass off just makes me want to scream my ass off and kick the ps2.

I think i have a problem, i think that's why i didn't like mafia that much i played for a while and the fatass italian was running like he finished off 3 bottles of red wine.:ouch:

The only thing that annoys me in Mafia is the speed limit, it's realistic, but man.... the cops in the game are even more picky than the ones in real life.

Now about San Andreas I do get your point about the gangbang orientated feel, but in what way is that different than the gameplay in GTA3? GTA3 wasn't as afro-american orientated as San Andreas, but the gameplay still was more that gangbang type. Massive shootouts in the streets, no mafia hit type of attacks.

The only point I get out of your post, Jimmy, is that you don't like the setting of the game. Which is understandable, but gameplay-wise San Andreas is superior to any previous GTA game. We're all entitled to our own opinions though, so I'm with you that I do hope GTA4 will be less "gangsta" and more "gangster", but I like how they tried new settings with vice city and san andreas.

Which fool voted for GTA London..... looks up. oh sorry knowone has, and it better stay like that GTA london was a CRAP game, it could of been the KO punch for the GTA series.

i gotta agree with that.. ive never played it, but ive seen people play it and i didnt want to play it cus it was so crap, and i didnt want to ruin my dreams of gta... ever since that day i have cowerd whenever someone mentions gta london. :scared:

I've come to the conclusion lately that for me, GTA III, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas are all as good as one another. I think I've enjoyed each one of them equally, and I can't really break them apart.

San Andreas hands down. 👍
I have to agree. San Andreas is the best because it has the most freedom and things to do. Skydiving, car mods, girlfriends, food, working casinos, etc.

I loved the 80's atmosphere in Vice City (Countach and Testarossa, woot!)

The earlier GTA's get a special award for having multiplayer.

GTA 2 was weird.
