If you still have dialup you should commit suicide.

If you think a larger filesize would make that much of a difference in bandwidth go look at the galleries.

I'm not for larger dimensions, just a larger filesize. 25k is just stupid.

Wow, someone minus repped me for my rant on the "preferred" way to say no.

Yeah, because that wasn't over the top... It's his website, you know.

Seriously weak. These are the times where the anonymity of the rep system is a curse. :guilty:

Well, it wasn't me this time, I swear

In all fairness, I think this is a good reason why the rep system is anonymous...

I take offense at that, what about those people (like me) who live in areas where broadband is either not available, or prohibitively expensive? ($80/month for 128kbps :ouch:) In my area, and quite a large amount of Oz, we need to apply for a grant from good old Johnnie Howard to cover the cost of installing satellite broadband (which I am currently going through the motions of right now) otherwise it is about $300 setup and $80.month for 128k ISDN, or about $2500 setup and $40/month for 512k satellite, with 500mb downloads per month, with excess data charged at 8c/mb. So how about you just think before you say that sort of thing.

Having said that however, a larger filesize would be nice, but if Jordan says no, then I guess we have to live with that. :grumpy:

A bigger avatar would mess up the page and make everything look bad, almost as bad as the home page when Ramesis Niblick III Kerplunk Kerplunk whoops where's my thribble's the last poster in a thread. :scared: :nervous:

...how, exactly? That badge below your name is larger than 120px wide, you know.

25.01KB is greater than 25.0KB while being listed as 25.0KB to one decimal place.

It's a 105x105 three slide gif.

:irked:

It was 31kb in 120x120 form, which I wanted to use.

You're right on the money man.

Pun intended, If you know what I'm talking about....

OK. Honestly, a 130-140 X 130-140 avatar increase would be nice. But if that's definitely out of the question, then a file size increase would be as nice as well.
But....are we asking for too much?

Would the file size increase really mess up the pages or cause too many problems?

Is it wrong that we ask for a better explanation?......or maybe you were in a rush yesterday and didn't have time to fully explain why. It happens.

When your mom says "Because I'm the mom. That's why!" do you demand a better explanation?

Well, you can, but it won't get you anywhere.

Leave him alone and move on.

Do you pay money to your mom? and really, making such examples as this one will only build poor arguments. This is a whole different system; if it wasn't for us too, this web-site wouldn't be what it is now.

When I lived in her house, yes I did. Now that I'm married, my wife gets all my money. But my point still stands. If Jordan doesn't want larger avatars, I don't think he needs to explain why.

This has the makings of another Quality Badge thread. Page after page of nonsense over something trivial that eventually gets locked.

While I agree with you Ozzy, it's not going to matter whether you know why or not we can't have larger filesizes. Either way, you still can't have them.

Maybe I'll wait to read what Jordan has to say about this before I reply to both of the posts above...

You're not in a very friendly mood today... so I'll keep this one straight to the point. I just asked if it was possible or not to have a bigger avatar size/space allowance, that's all. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone when I think that Jordan's answer was a tad superficial, since I'd like a better explanation for the reason other than what he gave.

If you go to a bar and order a drink and said drink isn't good (too much ice, too much water, spiked, luke-warm, whatever), you have the right to ask for another one and if the barman/owner says no, the least you'd want to know is the reason why, don'tcha think?

and thanks for the minus rep
I didn't negative rep you. Someone explaining how they feel about something doesn't deserve negative rep. Someone telling someone else to go **** themselves, yes. Stating an opinion, no.

sorry, my bad... edited now :)

A bigger file size would use more bandwidth and make GTP slower than it already is. :scared: And it would be a waste because it would make little or no difference. Also, it will make loading times slower for the poor dialup and slow internet users.
To expand on what MistaX said...

Assuming the file size limit for premo members and mods were raised from 25k to 50k, and that every single moderator and premo member uses ALL of that limit, that would consume a whopping 3 megabytes. Assuming we expand the limit for normal members from 20k to 40k, and 500 members use ALL of that limit, that would consume 10 megabytes. Now, I don't precisely know how much bandwidth that'd take up, but I doubt it'd crash the servers like a hammer on a nail.

That said, Jordan may have GTP9 near completion, and he just wants to save up some extra features for the release of it.

My 2¢.

OK, allow me to elaborate. The only possible reason anyone would need more than 25KB for a 120x120 image is for animation. Personally, with a few exceptions, I find animations distracting and generally tacky. 120x120 images are already large by most quality forum standards, and I believe they allow for quite a bit of tasteful creativity and quick image recognition without overpowering the rest of the content on the page.

Everyone will always want larger avatars and larger file sizes, for the same reason they want ultimate control over the format of their signatures. It's only human to want one's posts to "jump out" and say "Look at me, read this, this is important!" I want to encourage users to grab attention with the quality of their posts, not their flashy avatar or lengthy signature.

Well said Jordan. I'm convinced. 👍

But without a flashy avatar, I'm nothing...

Oh well, fair enough.

We tryed, we failed, Jordan has his reasons. Not like we thought It would happen did we?

Erm...I agree that animations are generally distracing and tacky, but if that's the case then why are there so many animated default avatars?

(That's not a piss-take or anything, I would genuinely like to know because I haven't been here long)

As Jordan said "Generally tacky". Some animated 'tars can be unobtrusive and non-disracting. Ones such as mine and Dukes are subtle and add a small bit of flair. Rumple's Blinking alien, was one such 'tar.

There are ways you can make an animated avatar, and still abide by Jordans requirements.

I am guessing that it's because that's what most people want so they stand out so Jordan gave it to them. Having longer more distracting gif's, however, is even more distracting and cluttered.

Edit: George, George, George of the jungle. Watch out for that... too late.

The default avatar collections were generously donated to GTPlanet by a few of our members years ago, and some include animations that I find perfectly acceptable. I never said that all animations are bad or "not allowed" here, I simply do not want to encourage anything larger or more elaborate than what is possible with our existing limitations.

OUCH....:ouch: (from the creator of the last Quality Badge thread) Soon with this kind of attitude nobody with bother speaking outloud with an idea to make GTP a better place. Where's the visionary spirit? Why do some think that all good ideas that been already put on the table? What would our forefathers thought of this pimp slapping of ideas. Now I better see how the great Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Graham Bell must have felt! I say that we here in the world of GTP must strive to be innovative and pioneering. We must stand for all that is good and fight for all that can be great!

My comment was about the back and forth some of us were having that was getting us nowhere, not about the thread itself.

Ah, ok. Thanks guys! 👍
