That thing sure is fugly and completely pointless in their lineup, just like a lot of the vehicles they make!

So they didn't learn their lesson with the 318ti?

And that hatch is slick indeed - but my money says that the lower part gets opened about 1.5% of the time and the other 98.5% you just open the big hatch and have done with it.

[EDIT] And that color sucks.

I actually kinda like it... I'm not sure what it is about it. But I think it's a nice departure from BMW's normal designs that all look the same. I think it looks really fresh.

I don't even know where to begin saying what I don't like about that design...

I do like the sides of the car though. And that's it.

Looks as if they were all so proud of that hatch, they just kinda rushed to put a car around it. So they could be the "innovators". Its just plain sad really, who is going to the dealer and picking out that ugly thing for a handsome price.:grumpy: And why is BMW trying to be like Volvo?

Can anyone explain the benefits of that stupid boot to me? The only thing I can think of is that it lends its self nicely for use as a hearse.

As for the rest of the car, I'm just ignoring it. We all moan about BMW's designs and then 5 years later we love them. So I'm just going to wait it out and hope I never see one again until 2014.

The engineering brain surgeon that thought of this design should be dismissed from BMW immediately , and no compensation allowed. Then you have the guys in corporate that thinks it's cool as well and give the green light to produce it , ( unbelievable ). Maybe these guys are smoking their lunches. ???

Yet more proof AMC is not dead. They jsut replaced the A and C with B and W.

and the Cool with Lame.

VW and Mercedes can make attractive 4 door coupés. Yet BMW fails.

I guess it isn't as bad as the X6.

The butt actually makes a twisted kind of sense on the X6, which is an SUV... which can't help but be chunky.

But on a sedan, where you can have a sleek hatch or a masculine boot attached to your long low body... the question is... why?

Is this a freakout reaction to the Porsche Panamera? Because thats the vibe I'm getting here...

Oddly, that's the first thing I thought of. BMW is racing Porsche to put the ugliest rear-end into production, because they failed to make the ugliest SUV (Cayenne).

---

GT = Grand Touring, which traditionally means two doors, but is not defined by it... as long as the car is comfortable, powerful and fast, it's a grand tourer. Unfortunately, many modern "grand tourers" fail miserably at the comfortable part, which is sacrificed for the "fast" part.

It's like "coupe", which is traditionally linked to having two doors, but refers merely to the shape of the roof, as opposed to a sedan, which is why a four-door CLS can be a coupe while the two-door 3-series is still technically a sedan... though I can't, for the life of me remember if the 3-coupe has a B-pillar or not... and that definition probably applies more to previous 3-series two-doors than to the current, swoopy 3-series coupe.

Actually, the CLS, having a B-pillar, is technically a sedan, but the roof-shape makes it a coupe. It's a strange classification... unlike the RX8, which is a true 4-door coupe, having no permanent B-pillar.

But generally, you have to go by the shape of the roof... though with today's designers going for dramatic swoops, even on four-doors, the edge of the definitions are getting pretty ragged.

To avoid being called SUC, the X6 is a Sports Activity Coupe.

Calling the 5-GT a Progressive Activity Sedan means they were avoiding it being called a Progressive Obesity Sedan?

I was about to ask what the big deal was until I clicked on the link and saw the front end. The side profile is fine and the rear end is tolerable, but god damn, the kidney grills have gone completely out of control. Even in the official photos it's just too much.

I find BMW's transparent effort to wean the typical SUV driver back into a car kinda amusing.

Are you saying that you like masculine rear ends?

:nervous:

Well at least the rear looks aerodynamic and all.

I think what happened is that they had so much wedge butt that they just decided to get rid of the trunk all together.

This has Major Failure written all over it... My God that thing is horrifyingly ugly... GT is not a good name unless it has 2 doors... No, I will not be buying anything from BMW anytime soon... The GTR looks better than that!!! :yuck: Randy

Oh I was expecting more from the thread than that. You nearly made me throw up over my keyboard. Looks like some weird breeding experiment between an X6 and an Evo X.

Can't you tell?

It clearly doubles up as a rear wing for added downforce.

This is a car made by committee:

Doesn't BMW make a 5-series wagon/estate already (but not for the US market)?

Correction Duke, nobody is going to use the mini rear hatch, since it interferes with whatever you are trying to load into the trunk floor, for anything larger than a grocery bag.

I profess it's actually not that ugly, but I'm not yet attracted to its personality, anyhow.

It's like they took a look at Skoda's offerings and started thinking: "Why haven't we done that? And why can't we?". And then they built that.

Unlike the Skoda Superb, this car is not elegant. It's not ugly, but I won't look at it and want it.

The only thing I can see that smaller hatch good for is if you have something long, like lumber, that sticks out the back but you don't want the entire hatch open. But then again, who'd haul lumber with a BMW?

What sort of long things do BMW owners haul?

Skis?

On topic: a completely pointless car. Not in an X6 kind of way, where the point is that it's pointless, but so pointless that it's pointlessly pointless. Or something.

Still, it's got a BMW badge on the nose so therefore it'll sell like hotcakes.

Why make this if they already have the X6? And there's supposed to be a car called the V5 that looks exactly like this. If these two are different models, BMW is redefining overkill. Oh, I forgot, they have already!:)
