1.09 Physics/Camber Test

Using the tune posted above, I decided to test camber after 1.09 update. I ran 5 laps at Silverstone GP first to get familiar with the car and then to Silverstone International for the test. Tune was build originally months ago and not the same since the update although I have not driven in a month atleast.

Original tune as posted above - 5 laps - 1:06.439
Original tune with suspension only defaulted - 5 laps - 1:06.747 (did run a red lap at 1:06.436)
Toe changed to 0.00 / 0.04 - 5 laps - 1:06.238 (still default suspension camber 0.5 / 1.5)
Camber 0.0 / 0.0 - 5 laps - 1:06.331 - noticed slow corner exit looser, understeer since default change
Camber 0.0 / 0.5 - 5 laps - 1:06.710 - not sure what happened, driver error?:nervous:
Camber 0.5 / 0.5 - 5 laps - 1:06.305 - understeer and slow exit improved
Camber 0.5 / 1.0 - 5 laps - 1:06.254 - slow exit even better
Camber 1.0 / 0.5 - 5 laps - 1.06.259 - Felt even better:)
Camber 1.0 / 1.0 - 3 laps - 1:06.011 - slight oversteer on slow corner exit returned?
red lapped 2 more, got distracted:grumpy:
Back to original tune........
Camber 0.5 / 1.5 - 5 laps - 1:06.083 (Push on high speed turns, needs front toe!)
Camber 0.5 / 1.0 - 5 laps - 1:05.846 (closer to previous average and feel pre 1.09)
Camber 1.0 / 0.5 - 5 laps - 1:05.764 (Best feel, most consistent all around through the test)
Camber 1.0 / 1.0 - 5 laps - 1:06.128 (understeer mid-corner, loose off. DID NOT like the feel of these
settings. Had to really work to keep up with ghost from 1.0 / 0.5)
Camber 1.5 / 1.0 - 5 laps - 1:05.822 (Better turn in- had to change braking points. Better mid corner
speed allowed a little high speed exit looseness.
Camber 1.0 / 1.5 - 5 laps - 1:05.890 (most laps were 1:06.400 or worse, rear had more grip but added
more understeer(?). Again, hard to keep up with ghost)
Camber 2.0 / 1.5 - 5 laps - 1:06.131 (Seems to have gone too far with front camber, rear good grip.
TOO tight in mid-high speed corners. Brakes much worse, earlier reguired.
Camber 0.0 / 0.0 - 7 laps - 1:05.710 (decided to finish where I started. Fastest lap time. Faster than
ghost for first half of the lap, then behind consistently. Better final section made it faster. Was set on lap 6, lap 7 was 1:06.690 caused by rear loose on exit.)

What I have noticed so far: brakes decline with front camber
front camber helps grip mid-high speed corners but slower in slow corners
Rear camber helps exit on slow corners, might aide in mid-high speed corners.
Obviously, 0.60 rear toe helps stability and corner exit but hurts rotation overall.
Rear toe at 0.04 helps rotation but needs help to control slow corner exit.
The car feels better and more consistent with front camber higher than rear.

Default settings:
Ride Height - 110 / 110
Springs - 7.12 / 7.98
Comp - 3 / 3
Ext - 3 / 3
ARB - 3 / 3
Camber - 0.5 / 1.5
Toe - 0.00 / 0.60

Conclusion
Does camber make you faster, that is the question? The answer is NO and Yes. By itself no, however you can feel gains with it as well as loses. Mid-corner grip goes up with front camber, exit grip with rear. Braking suffers if you go too high with the front. Lap times are not the best way to judge, feel is. This test allowed me to feel each change and I had to adjust to each. The tune did not like the rear higher than the front or equal to it. It always felt better with the front higher than the rear. I suspect this would be the opposite with a MR car. I also suspect (and will have to test) that harder tires, i.e.; comfort soft/sport hard would like less camber and softer tires, RH-RS would like more. Braking becomes a big issue and with tires having less grip to begin with, you would really need to brake earlier and lap times would suffer. Tires with more grip would handle more before noticing(just a theory right now).
The use of camber as an aide for certain handling issues will make a tune faster in parts of the track and slower in others. A 0.0 camber tune may still be faster for a given lap!!! but over a span of laps, I believe the consistency with would win out. Camber can definitely now be used to improve a tune whereas in 1.08, it would hinder.
For me, somewhere around 1.0/0.5 is the sweet spot and I would build from there with this car. Building a tune from scratch and using camber would be more beneficial than just adding camber. This car was tuned for 0.0/0.0, with camber it may need a few tweaks to make the car better. I would suggest trying this tune at 0.0 and than with 1.0/0.5 for yourself and see if you feel the difference. As for me, I will be using camber going forward until I hear results from @Motor City Hami with his testing. Better more clear tester than myself, very thorough as we all know and trust.
Great test and super data Bowtie! 👍

I've not had a lot of time to test properly due to other commitments, but what I have done so far pretty much goes along with your findings. I run more MR cars and you're right on the money, just about every one I've tried is better with higher rear camber.

Great data sir, i've been too tired due to lack of sleep to really test the last week. My youngest is not sleeping great and my oldest is getting up earlier ugg.

Just an oberservation on the MR Elise '11 i tuned it liked higher front camber for feel and consistancy. and as your tests showed less than half a degree was the key.

*edit corrected auto incorrect mistake thanks shaunm for pointing it out

NOTE: This tune does not like too much second gear, try not to use as third gear will do you just fine.
Fastest lap in tuning was 1:25.357, only used 2nd gear once. If you need to use 2nd to go faster, try short shifting into 3rd out of slow corners to tame wheel spin.

This is a good tune that I am overall happy with, some of the lap times testers got out of it were faster than me:embarrassed:.....unfortunately I ran into some tuners who were just faster.

Very much what I was expecting a Viper to be like, not too loose, very nice in the corners but was not able to be as smooth as with Brian Wolf's which was pretty similar.

Good tune with a high level of comfort, except for the wheelie on the backstretch! Tapping the throttle coming out of 2nd gear corners helped keep the back in check since I can't short shift in automatic.

Very stable car. Touch of oversteer on corner exit if mashing the go button. Deserved a better time.

Impressions of the tune; I couldn’t quite seem to keep this car going in straight on an aggressive exit. I would always lose the tail. Had great turn in and grip through the corners. Was stable at speed and under braking.

This tune rides the bumps nicely, turns in nice, with a little understeer mid corner and will try to kill you on exit
if you`re not gentle on the loud pedal! But, good fun. Just not as easy as some to lay down some tidy laps. Well done.

@@Bowtie-muscle 1:24.863 DC-8

- the car was very predictable overall and had very useable gearing. 3rd,4th,and 5th are the meat for the track and they were nearly perfectly matched to the power. I had a bit of exit understeer and had to wait a bit longer than i wanted to get back on the gas. Both of those (small) gripes probably would have disappeared with a higher accell setting.
- the car felt great and behaved as expected.

Scirocco R FITT Hot Hatch Challenge reviews:

@Bowtie-muscle - Scirocco R '10

Fastest Lap;1:39.580 Drivers Choice; 8.5

Impressions of the tune; This car was light on it’s feet so to speak, almost to light, it had great turn in and grip on entry-mid corner, I found exit grip a little on the light side. I did find that this car didn't like having it’s tail tapped on curbs. I had more than a few great laps go out the window cause I tapped the tail on a curb. I found the TLOR hard to control in this car, it either didn't happen or happened so fast I spun the car. I could tell there was more in this car I just couldn't find it, maybe a better driver will. The LSD was done very with this car, allowed for great turn in and control on exit. But caused mid corner understeer.

by backnfourth:

@@Bowtie-muscle
Fast Lap: 1:38.072
DC: 7
Comments: The most fun and probably most consistent through turn 1 and always good sector 1 times. Steep learning curve. Braking was solid and helped with corner entry. Mid corner slide could be unpredictable and over rotate at times and getting on the throttle would turn the outer front tire red. When rotation was manageable corner exit was tight and with good speed. The back end just felt too floaty to be consistent.

Too soft on the dampers. Too long to get used to the tune after driving the others but still fast.
10 Laps chasing Hami' ghost and couldn't hold on.

A little on the loose side but good rotation. Corner exit traction was very on edge but fast if you're careful.

Turn in bordering on oversteer here, but it does give you confidence to brake late and get on the power early, because you know it's going to get through the corner.

Wheel spin on this car is still present but less, still can be a tick loose(I like it this way) but less also. Can lose back end on curbs if not careful (sorry). During testing for the Hot Hatch Challenge my best time was 1:37.955, with adjustments I ran a 1:38.019 after only 5 laps. Way fewer than during tuning for the challenge. Might not have mattered for lap time but might have improved Driver Choice Score.

I would have never brought this car before as its very ugly but I hate time trials so thought I would give it a go as I don't have much at 500pp and I'm glad I did:) quick question do you think you will do a tune for the corvette LM car's?

Thanks for giving it a go, glad it worked for you:). To answer your question, if you notice, I have been working backwards with the Chevys. Just kind of happened that way but I do intend to do the racecars also in reverse(year) order. First I need to do the 69 Camaro as I am ashamed to admit, I have not even touched yet in GT6. Z28 was first rear keeper that I bought in GT5:embarrassed:. Keep an eye open, might do a few quicker but I have 8 or 9 to still post that are not Chevy before doing the racecars.

1st time driving this car, and man is it weird. Glued to the road one minute, then an almost 4 wheel drift the next. A fun car to drive though.

by jules283 -

Bowtie-muscle 1.31.499 DC:7

A fun car this one! Lots of oversteer available, especially when trail braking. Enough to initiate a easily corrected spin. I adjusted to this pretty quickly though! My only other problem was that it seemed to squat down so heavily at the rear under power that I lost traction at the front, forcing me back off slightly, and hurting lap time. I felt braking into chicane to be weak? But my abiding memory of this tune will be trail braking into the right-hand turn leading directly onto the back straight... awesome!

@@Bowtie-muscle
1:31.409 DC - 7

The good news, your going to finish 4th:), the bad news, there's only 4 cars:embarrassed:
It may have been the best looking:sly:, but this tune missed the mark, don't let the time fool you. A combination of lower downforce than the rest and more wheel spin made this a tune requiring precision and a little finesse. If you missed corner entry, a 4 wheel drift followed, miss exit and it would push out. I even managed to roll it over (again:scared:). If you got it right, you could pull off a good lap, but it took work. A good effort, if you are looking for a fun, wild and challenging tune to drive, this is it. But be warned, it is not for the faint of heart. After you indulge in a large piece of humble pie:guilty:, may I suggest the following:
#1 - Read Hami's tuning guide, then drive his tune 💡
#2 - Re-read Hami's tuning guide, then drive jules283's tune:D
#3 - When you enter a "Spec" series, think twice if there is a "Pro" before Spec:dopey:

@Bowtie-muscle - Tune

Impressions of the tune; I was pleasantly surprised by this tune, after reading other reviews of the car I was expecting to be in spins and slide constantly. It was solid, just a bit off the mark, The body roll was perfect, turn in was fantastic (sometimes a little too fantastic :banghead:) Rotation was very good the tail was doing it’s fair share of coming around the corners and not just sitting there getting dragged along as happens so often with FF cars. Overall good tune, well built. Just a bit too stiff, and little light on the front downforce.

Full Reviews
Note:
My review of my tune above was having a little fun with myself knowing that my tune was not as good as the others. As the host of the event, and not wanting to make my tune out to be better than it was, I took an opportunity to lighten the mood.
