Is this normal? Should I be concerned? In-game seems to drive straight well enough. Booting up the PS3 itself appears to have a calibration procedure closer (still not dead on though) to center.

So to clarify, your wheel when driving straight is not centered? I only ask because after calibration the wheel never really returns to the exact center, but the wheel is still perfectly centered (calibration wise) in the game.

There is also a known issue with the optical encoder wheel coming loose after the motor heats it up, and cracks it (its plastic). But since you have a new wheel I doubt thats it, unless it was broken when put together.

If you have a problem with the encoder wheel you would lose calibration as you drive, so the center position of the wheel would drift to the left or right gradually.

So which is it?

There is a 3rd possible cause too. I've take these wheels apart many times and there is a little geared piece which is used in calibration. If that piece isn't perfectly centered when putting the wheel together the center will end up just a few degrees to the right or left. its possible the factory could have done that.

Sorry about the confusion. The wheel calibrates itself as you enter the game, but after it spins back and forth it does not return to the dead on center position as shown in the pic i.e. visually very much skewed to the right. In-game drives straight which is contrary to what the visual result of calibration would seem to suggest. My previous wheel (DFP) always calibrated both visually and in-game to center, which is what I was expecting with a much newer model. Hence, why I am confused.

No that's totally normal, I suppose if the force feedback during calibration were stronger (like GT5) it would be slightly better, but its also due to the dead zone / helical gears which have a bit of play in them.

I've owned both G25 and G27 wheels and they both did that. The G27 is worse though due to the Helical gears.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Phew! I was really dreading the prospect of having to RMA but one day after getting it... :)

Can't help myself. Always looking at things from an engineering standpoint... If it ain't perfect there must be something wrong... :D

Give this a try. It worked for my wheel.

Also check the little wheel with the little holes, the one that goes through the optical sensor

Cheers for the linked vid. Good to know for the future when I have me many miles on the clock... but appears everything is fine. For now... :)

My g27 doesn't do that. It will go a little off center when the calibration is done due to the rotation force but it centers right up when it gets some force input from a game. Try centering it by hand right after the calibration before the game sends it any input. I would exchange it at the place of purchase or RMA it.

Edit: I have had two of them and neither one calibrated off center like that.

Rotational force, exactly what I meant happens to mine as well.

As soon as there's the slightest FFB it goes to center.

Isn't that what he was experiencing?

Mine does it also, it is perfectly normal because of the 2 motors there is a slight dead spot in the middle to offset the two, unlike the DFGT which only uses one motor so it centers perfect every time.

You need to start worrying when it will not calibrate at all or loses calibration while using it, then it is time to fix or replace the optical encoder wheel. My recommendation when that time comes is to get one from http://www.cmlaserservice.com/page_home.html it replaces the crappy plastic one with a laser cut brass wheel.

Seems I may be the exception not the rule. Call Logitech support, they are the best in the industry and will have some definitive answers for you.

Same here for my G25 . I make sure it is centred before turning on my ps3;, and then centering again before starting the game and then before driving in game and is 98% centred then.

First off, very much appreciate everyone passing along their experience and insights. I admit to not having tried or even thought to try a manual centering of the wheel pre-boot & pre-game, but certainly makes sense that any previous off-center deviation will only be amplified due to the dual-motor design. Will give that a shot. Just would be nice to be able to enjoy the wheel some more and rule out possible defects first before going into damage control mode all in. At this point, seems more an annoyance than anything else as wheel alignment appears fine when in-game, I guess, as noted, due to FFB inputs being applied to the wheel offset by actual steering input. Dunno. All still seems a bit weird to me though... :odd:

Thanks guys.

As I said earlier, nothing to be worried about, mine is not broken nor off center while playing. I've never thought twice about the fact that it ends up slightly off center after calibration.

I really don't think anything is wrong :)

Edit: usual typo's
