I would get a wheel, but I don't have a good area to set it up... or let me rephrase that... my wife wouldn't appreciate a steering wheel setup in the living room nearly as much as I would. I don't NEED it to enjoy the game, but I'm sure I'd enjoy it more with a wheel.

I did a lot of practice over the weekend with FR cars without SRF and I'm better, but still too twitchy. When I started practicing a lot without SRF on all the cars, it was only to get better at Time Trials. I didn't want to spend hours on one TT. I can get gold on the first lap with most cars and tracks. I didn't even attempt the X2010 TT though. I despise that car. I can only drive it decent on 3 tracks. The 2 ovals and High Speed Ring, so I just ignore it's existance.

Wheels are very fun. Understand the wife situation but if you get a wheel stand pro you can fold the wheel and pedals up and put it in the closest closest or just by the tv.

I'm so much better at controlling oversteer with the DS3 which is why I drift with it. If PD would add a wheel rotation lock than a wheel would be so much easier to get used to. Especially drifting!

My Wheel, a DFGT lives behind the TV and when I'm using it I sit in my armchair, facing the TV and clamp the wheel to a bed tray which rests on a cushion on my knees with two of the fold-able legs extended and resting on the seat of the chair. The foot unit sits on the floor as you would expect.Packed away It all takes very little room. When I'm driving the whole thing works well.

I'm going to make a post which should answer the question completely and end the thread (like it maters since the OP hasn't posted recently).

Anyway, all of the ideas supplied by the GTP members have given you all of the tips and tricks the game (I was unfortunate enough to not be given these when I started). To name the most important and helpful: Racing Soft tires, at least Skid Recovery Force and Traction Control 5, practice and improve your skills on the License Tests, race Four-Wheel Drive cars, and race the known dominant cars (R35 TC, 2J, Etc.)

If you have tried all of these pieces of advice, and haven't found them to improve your driving, then I would strongly take a wider view of the entire situation. GT5 is a hardcore racing sim, I'm not saying its the most realistic out there but is one of, or the best sim for the PS3. This means that it is hard to get used to and race competitively, especially when racing with cars around the PP and tire compound of the AI. Because of this you may want to stop playing GT5 all together and get a less serious sim. Off the top of my head I can think of some NFS games. There are many more out there but that's all I can name.

If or when you master racing in these games then begin playing GT5 again.

This is all around the most complete and best response given so far. I hope that you will start to enjoy and win in this game because it is fun and will give you the best racing experience on the PS3.

Some people may say that getting a wheel will also help but I say that it will not (at least in your situation). Because PD does not have a rotation lock it is difficult to correct a car which has entered oversteer. This is why many people use a
DS3 to drift. I would say stick with your DS3 and use the setup listed:

Accelerate: Right Trigger
Brake: Left Trigger
Steer: Left Analog Stick.

Optional:

Look back: Triangle
Reverse: Square
E-Brake: Circle

This helps with the smoothness of your acceleration, braking and steering. Overall it improves your ability to drive with a controller.
