Actually yes, ps3 is capable of doing this. Wind effects on cars or debris or water on wheels will add realism

Possible if these aren't the game's top priorities:

1. 16 cars on the track
2. 60 FPS
3. 200K+ Poly models
4. Damage (well sort of)

You're confusing a $300 piece of game console to a x thousand dollars super computer. :sly: It can only do so much, so compromise must be considered.
Sure we all want our game to look like Avatar but that's not gonna happen anytime soon.

Theoretically ps3 can do it, but maybe another 5 years of development hehe, many developers already said about ps3 power if like a deep well, you just have to invest a lot of time and talent to produce more and more, thats the good thing about Cell and also using Blu ray.

Yes, that's true but in the words of a fellow Filipino to another Filipino... Walakang alam talaga...

This game already has so much to offer and yet...

The interview is really a good read.

* I'm very glad the L-FA will be in. AND the HSV-010.
* I'm glad there is clarity about Porsche now.. It's a little sad, but I can wait for Porsche.
* Regarding to the skidmarks... Kazunori is right, that's just a minor thing. When I'm racing, I'm looking forward, not in my rear view mirror to see my skidmarks.
* About weather.. as he answers the question with only something about skidmarks, I do think weather is still in... Just as OPM said.
* He still gets on with the 20locations - 70layouts thing but.. We'll just have to wait, we had enough discussions about that:p

But skid marks could have been a great basis too see if your wheels are performing well. i hope weather is not just for decoration but it will affect cars speed and handling and performance. Did you know that there are cars which perform better when it is cold or cars perform better when it is hot. I hope they can replicate those effects of weather on cars performance and parts and engine.

By the way along with Lexus LFA, i'm happy that Honda Honda HSV-010 GT is in.

Yes it is capable of doing this, that is if you remove other details and lower resolution. Can't have everything.

Edit, oops late reply, teach me for leaving the window open so long.

I understand, i don't want another 5 years to add new features even if ps3 is capable of handling all this features.

I don't understand whether people don't see the advantage of having skidmarks or refuse to admit it with the sole purpose to defend the game regardless what the matter is. Of course you don't see your own marks while you drive, but you see the ones of car ahead of you, you see your skidmarks the next lap. It's especially funny when you see two black lines going in the gravel and a car stopped in the barrier.
And please stop giving the lack of processing power as an excuse for the absence of skidmarks because it's pathetic. Games had them 10 years ago. A ton of games for the ps3 has them. It's clear that KY does not care about it, not that he can not implement it.

Wet tracks in previous GT's affected car performance significantly so I don't see why not.

i also hope wind condition and temperature affect the performance or parts of the car. Maybe I'm asking to much but thats the best way to implement weather effects, and not just eye candy. Weather affecting the car is a perfect way to make realism.

Why are so many obsessed about skidmarks ? Forget about the skidmarks. Its just a SMALL detail. So many other details to be exited about :)

just need a clear answer , if you drive a racecar on a track , Im sure you'll see where skidmarks are importants after some laps ...

Personally I think that day/night light is something PD can reasonably reach, they have a well built 3d environment , adding lights should be just a matter of calculations (at least not so far from that).

Regarding weather changes I am quite curious to see how they'll do that. They are perfectionist so I wonder how they will handle:
1) Different rain strength on the track, meaning different water effect on the asphalt.
2) Drops running on the glasses as well on the rest of the car and falling down from it in a realistic way.
3) The racing line used by cars should be drier than the rest of the asphalt
4) Water raised by the cars running on the asphalt
5) People along the track with umbrellas and so on?
6) Wind should affect the environment as well (trees...)

Of course, compromises are needed.
We'll see... I can't wait for the TAS, I just hope that the bad yesterday news will not affect the planned GT5 show at the TAS

Really good interview, just goes to show with a bit of organisation and communication with the press we can get a decent result. Thanks to everyone who posts questions.

Roll on the Tokyo Auto Salon this weekend

I'd rather see PD put more detail into something else, other than waste time on skid marks that will only disappear after 15 or so seconds anyway ;)

I find those guys asking for perfection very reasonable. If there are words like "perfectionist" or "redefining the genre" then GT5 has better not stay as just GT4 with better resolution and car model polygon numbers. It has to do things like volumetric smoke realistically suspensing into the air instead three fading sprites, realistic skidmarks with particles of gum kicked up instead of nothing, realistic light projection, rain racing with full effects, time of the day, trees with branches instead of just cardboards, much better AI driving in professional mode with full physics like you have to and greater sounds instead of that poor dead buzzing.

It's really glaring that they use technologies of year 2020 together with technologies from 90's in the same game. I would easilly accept only 100k polygon cars and have many other things better done. In fact I wouldn't notice them because only things that are 100x less detailed than cars constantly attract my eyes in a bad manner.

PS3 is really capable of all those things but PD are just not doing them. They seem to be too blinded by car and polygon numbers. Now it's too late but perhaps we could have progress in other things than car graphics in the sixth installment. I cross my fingers.

I agree, its just to me they should have at least made the trees better, and some skid marks. But anyway I think gt5 will still be the best racing game ever. By the way i like his taste, his favorite driver is Senna for f1 who is for me the greatest and fastest driver ever, and Jeff Gordon the best NASCAR driver ever for me.

Guys, just stop and think for a moment...

people in PD have given us 2 years ago smooth frame rates with huge polygon counts, and you don't expect to see 3d trees or skidmarks? Of course they will be there, it's nothing difficult to do, it takes a fairly small amount of time, the improvement will be great and people keep complaining about them. Why not have them? I am pretty certain that there will be 3d trees, and grass and skidmarks.. Do you think it would be sooo difficult for people modeling these cards to model - or even texture 8 cardboards for the trees instead of 2? Noone would even notice it's 2d :P

The rain physics mentioned above would be awesome, although it is highly unlikely for us to witness them in this installment, we know ps3 has the power, but I don't think it's THAT powerful, let alone it's hundreds of hours of programming

I could understand this if the current system was an evolution of GT4. Unfortunately the entire game needed to be re-worked from the ground up for the PlayStation 3, so they started over.

It's like a car, when a new sedan replaces the old one, it usually adds a few new features, better performance/efficiency and better build quality. I see GT4 as being a heavily heavily face-lifted version of the original GT1 formula. 6 cars on track with basic racing modifications and a plethora of locations, same camera views, same racing styles, same A.I. etc. etc.

With GT5, this is the new and improved version, they went back to the drawing board. Instead of just piling features onto the old formula, they now had to redo the amount of cars on track, redo all of the tracks, redo all of the cars, redo the A.I. , redo the physics, more than likely had to re-test all the cars from the previous games to update the information then ADD stuff like new tracks, new cars, new online features, head tracking, a possible track editor, being able to modify your cars extensively and they had to do this on by and far the hardest system to develop games on currently available in the market, all the while keeping their sanity.

I give P.D. kudos.

I can understand that these points are ridiculous for anyone reading it constantly but trees or skidmarks are only on the top of many details and aspects of the game which PD started to overlook on the hunt for best car graphics.

But anyway I think gt5 will still be the best racing game ever.

Yes, without a doubt. I'm really looking forward to it like a little kid. I still do play Prologue almost every day. I really love this game which can't be obvious to many contributors here. Only chose the way of constructive criticism which does sometimes a conflict here and there. It will end the day I start to play GT5. I will only enjoy then if they don't screwed the gameplay.

Have a feeling you will be very dissapointed when gt5 comes out RedBaron

No, I'm a realist and I already stated it in the last column of my last post.

There will always be whiners.. It's just a fact, no matter how much you give them.

But it's no more question how much but how well done. Whole game system, replays with no rewind or camera change, all those missing effects of real world and really bad engine sounds are reminding us that we can see an evolution but no revolution about what is Kaz constantly talking.
