Just sayin', but I saw about 8 Volts yesterday thought my travels. It was a mix of M plates and normal plates so I really don't know what the deal is there, but I really don't care because I'm bored of it.
 
You can order them through a Chevy dealer now so I'm guessing the average Joe can now get their hands on one.
 
Alright that's what I figured. Have you seen a lot yet? I saw most of them over around Birmingham and Troy so I'm guessing you've ran into a few.
 
Ya they are everywhere, there is one in my neighbourhood. I'm bored with them already :lol:.
 
I still haven't seen any making their way over to this side of the state yet. I'm sure they'll be here soon, seeing that there's a lot of money to be spent on overpriced cars here.
 
I've yet to see one in this part of the state either. I'm sure it's just a matter of time, as there will probably be three or four in East Grand Rapids by the end of the year.

Stop-n-go traffic in a sea of over-caffeinated and sleep-deprived commuters is not a playground for eco-runs. Throw in a dash of road works and a 15 mile trip can take over an hour.

The testing you mentioned was a challenge put out by GM. In real world conditions, the Volt will not live up to it's promises or price tag. No way.

You're clearly forgetting the 40 mile EV range. In stop-n-go traffic this is exactly when the Volt will be at it's best... especially since EVs work best at low speeds, as that's when they drain the battery the slowest.

Smart quote something like an 80 mile range with their Electric Drive, yet they said they've seen over 130 miles before empty when driving in city traffic.

Likewise, I suspect an hour of crawling traffic in a Volt will prove no trouble for the circa 40 mile EV range, in which case you'd be getting infinate MPGs. And if it's clear enough for the petrol motor to kick in, then it's clear enough not to drive like a lunatic and get terrible MPGs. I still maintain that Motor Trend and the likes were unlikely to be driving how many owners would. Given that my editor was one of the ones who managed comfortably over 40 miles in EV mode and a few other mags did too, it's clearly not difficult to achieve.

Which is why the smart ones will probably buy a VW diesel. Volt users will be the same type of person who would sit in front of an Apple store for hours/days to be the 1st to buy an Ipad. As soon as something new comes along, they buy that instead.

You may be right, but then you could say that about Prius owners too and those are a resounding success on the market.

You can read the press releases, recite transcripts from the suits at GM, and look over GM's website as many times as you like. It's a 🤬 Daewoo.

No it isn't.

Sure, the Delta II architecture was Opel...from there, Daewoo designed track, length, and all the body panels & important bits to create their own car based on the Delta II design. It's Daewoo's car and GM, once again, has badge engineered a car. Look at the Lacetti, which has been on sale for a few years now, and look at the 2011 Cruze. Same damn thing. The Volt is a Cruze with some styling changes, a few batteries, and a complex hybrid system.

It's an Opel platform.

Daewoo use it, Chevy use it. There's no mid-point where it goes through being a Daewoo and comes out the other side as a Chevy, they just both happen to use the same platform.

11-ish hours on 120v. The gas engine does not re-charge the battery, it just 'maintains' it. So, for 11 hours you're stuck or you travel the streets with the guilt of using fuel. Awesome huh?

That's assuming that you drive every day long enough to fully drain the battery.

Many people don't.

Behavior modifications do not go over well. The penalty for not charging up your Daewoo is using fuel...so it's not really life or death. People like, and will pay for, convenience. In this case, they'll pay for fuel instead of plugging in the car. Now I know I can't prove myself right nor can you prove me wrong - so we'll just have to wait and see now won't we?

If you have access to one of these power points that you seem confident that nobody can access (like, if you live in the suburbs like huge proportions of the population and have your own garage...) then what's more convenient than sticking it on charge every night?

How long does it take to charge a battery?

4 seconds. Two to plug it in at night and two to unplug it in the morning. The rest of the time you're doing something other than charging it, like cooking dinner, watching TV with the kids or being asleep.

I fail to see how it's more convenient topping up the gas tank every day.

You write for an EV site, so it's probably fair to say that you have some emotional & financial reasons to see EVs take off. It's something you believe in, which is fine, and it's something that pays your bills...some at least.

Well spotted, but I'm not in it for financial gain. I do like EVs and I'll certainly write about them for a long time to come, but mainly for me this is simply a stepping stone to bigger and better jobs.

Although I'll always stick to my guns with EVs, I'm not going to turn someone down should they offer me a job driving sports cars for the rest of my life...

My big beef with this colossal $41,000 Korean piece of **** is that it could have been so much better. But the suits and the accountants got involved and are repeating the same mistakes GM has made for the past decade. If you don't think selling a $41,000 car along side a $15,000 car that looks damn near identical from across the lot is a problem...well...neither does GM. Customers, on the other hand, will see that as a problem. See the Cadillac Cimarron.

You're making the assumption that someone will be choosing between a Cruze and a Volt. You maintain they look the same, which is fair enough (wrong, but fair enough), but simply on price alone they're separated by a massive gap in the market.

And like it or not, there's a massive technology gap too. The Cruze is a bum-basic economy sedan (in the monetary sense rather than the consumption sense). The Volt is significantly more tech-laden and a reasonable step more upmarket.

Why is the car badge engineered? Something billed/hyped as being so revolutionary should be bespoke and a starting point for something new right? Answer: they fired a lot of really great engineers. So did Chrysler...and so did Ford (to a lesser degree).

Setting aside the fact that it's not just a re-badged Daewoo like you claim it is, using a common platform is still the best way for a company to make any money from a product. Being based on a Golf doesn't make the Audi TT any less of a car.

The answer to those questions, unfortunately, is no. Even GM says it will not make money in the short term despite the $7,500 subsidy going right to GMAC/Ally/whatevertheyarecalledthisweek padding the bottom line whenever someone leases.

The subsidy issue is a thorny one since it does exist and it's more or less level across the board for all EVs (actually, as a range-extended EV, hybrid, whatever you want to call it, the Volt gets fewer subsidies and tax credits than the Leaf and other full EVs).

Whether it's a good car or not is down to personal taste but I've not read a single review yet saying it's a bad one, despite all the moaning about it not being a full EV (which it never was to start with).

Equally disgusting is GM calling this an EV. According to the Society of American Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (both of which I belong to), it's a 🤬 hybrid.

For the plight of GM I don't really care - I'm not wild on Chevys, I thoroughly dislike Vauxhalls/Opels and Holdens mean as much to me as you'd expect a marque sold only on the other side of the globe to, so whether they're all re-badged Daewoos or not doesn't actually concern me.

That the Volt is or isn't a hybrid also doesn't really bother me. GM might have been calling it an EV but anyone with two braincells to rub together can see that it's not been all along - whether you call it a range-extended EV or hybrid it's always been one of them - but you can't deny it still has significantly more EV functionality than any other hybrid sold thus far.

If there's one beef I do have with GM it was the business about them trying to copyright the term "range anxiety" just to have a bit of a kick at Nissan, when anyone buying an EV knowing that it doesn't have enough range for their needs is simply an idiot and anyone putting their name down for a Leaf (a lot of people) clearly realise that a 100 mile range doesn't make a difference to them.

While I'm in the region of allegiances I may as well add that I have no particular reason to defend the Volt other than that I think a lot of what you're saying is either wrong or unnecessarily harsh on GM.

I see lots of risk here. If 4 out of 10 people switched to battery powered cars, what would happen to the prices of the raw materials used to make the batteries? Supply meet demand...

On another front, with all the CO2 hoopla, what about the price risk to electricity? The US gov't is in no rush to go nuke or build anything to modernize the grid - will the larger demand for electricity increase prices to the point that gas is cheaper?

Increased cost in raw materials (batteries) and increased cost in cost electricity doesn't sound like utopia to me. If it's a niche product, no big deal. But if these contraptions take off, any economies of scale will probably we wiped out by a jump in price for raw materials.

And that charger thing;
Quick chargers require 220v in the US. Good ****ing luck trying to get your home owner's association to sign off on that. And for those who live in apartments and condos; will lots & parking gargages look like a jump-rope convention? Will people charge their EV outside even though it's raining? What about snow/ice? I doubt it.

With rush hour traffic & daily commutes; miles really don't mean a thing - time does. While you're stuck in traffic, you're running all the accessories. If you have to brave a 2hr commute each way, will you get 40 miles per charge? Hell no. Time is key - not distance.

People want to avoid bad traffic jams & congestion, not paying a few bucks at a pump. These people usually take some form of public transport to avoid congestion, outrageous parking rates, and actually get to work somewhat on time. So what's the point of an EV in the US?

I don't really know the answer to that question. It's not to save money as that car is not cheap. It's not to commute to the city as there are better ways. Is it to save oil? Is it to save the careers of politicians? Seems like the latter.

There are piston engine designs out there that are or could be ridiculously efficient. Mazda is touting a new DI engine with 14:1 compression that gets 40 (50? I can't remember right now) MPG. That kind of efficiency is where OEMs should be going. I've also posted a link to the Crower 6-stroke engine, which has a host of possibilities and is ridiculously simple and efficient. Diesels have come a long way since the black-smoke-machines of the late 70's and advances in lubrication, drivetrain, and tires are incredible since the malaise era.

So why batteries? B/C the politicians say so. I don't trust the politicians nor do I think batteries are the solution to any problem, do you? The link between politics and automobiles is undeniable and it's usually not in the best interest of 'the people' but the career of said politicians.

Everything surrounding the Volt just seems so damn sleazy & corrupt; people should decided which cars & technology are winners and losers...not bureaucrats, judges, or even the president of the US.

The vast majority of minerals like lithium used in batteries haven't been mined yet.

What's more, unlike oil, lithium can be recycled. When a lithium battery has outlived it's useful life you can take the lithium, witchcraft happens and it can be used in a new battery. Not possible with gasoline.

What's also not possible with gasoline is any capacity to manufacture it synthetically on a level great enough to meet global demand. In fact, can it be synthetically manufactured at all? I know you can get synth oil but then that's a lubricant, not a fuel.

In contrast, people are continually refining and developing battery tech. Not just improving the ones we already have and extracting more power and more miles from them (as the same is happening in regular cars too) but coming up with entirely new batteries, carbon nanotechnology and the like.

The ICE will only ever be "refined". I don't want to pull a famous last words trick here and say that there will be no more great advances in internal combustion, but essentially the concept of an ICE will remain the same now until the day the last drop of oil has been used.

Then you have the tailpipe emissions thing. EVs have none, regardless of where they get their electricity. ICE cars do. And even when you take in the full dust-to-dust cycle of an EV, you're still looking at an equivalent of no more than 40g/km of CO2, which no current car gets anywhere near even on tailpipe emissions alone - once you do their dust-to-dust cycle, the CO2 figure goes through the roof.

And it's not just CO2 remember. A lot more comes out the back of a car than carbon dioxide, even in modern and significantly cleaner cars than they used to be.

You're right, though 4/10 is still a long, long way away. I seem to remember hearing that only 1% of the current car market is even hybrids, let alone full EVs.

There's no rush at the moment because the best estimates are that the grid can cope with room to spare. No need to build any more just yet (although of course, there are doubters. I even wrote about this myself a few months back).

Again, is it not too much to assume that you'd do your sums beforehand and decide whether an EV would meet your needs rather than turning up at your twentieth-storey apartment one day with a Nissan Leaf and thinking "Damn, I should have bought more extension cables..."?

I understand this, but since accessories use significantly less power than the motor driving the car, the amount of power they use in proportion is much less. Even, for arguements sake, if you average 50mph on your commute that's still two hours of driving in a Nissan Leaf. At 5mph, even with all your accessories going, you're still going to have several hours battery there to play with even once you get moving again.

An EV is just another car, and can be used in many of the situations that any other regular car can be used in. If that's your daily commute, then it's arguably better than a regular car unless you commute vast distances.

I answered the commuting point above. Saying that "other ways" are better for commuting misses the point of having a car in the first place. For many people, public transport just isn't good enough, isn't convenient enough or simply doesn't suit their lifestyle. In which case if you're simply commuting, then an EV is more than up to the task.

Saving money? Again, it depends on where the savings are. A Volt is expensive, I'm not debating that. A Leaf? Well, if you can make use of all the discounts you can get one cheaper than a Prius. If you're really clever you can get one for just over $12k. I'd start calling EVs cheap at that point.

And that's before the "early adopter" thing wears off and economies of scale allow EV prices to come down naturally.

ICEs are getting better no doubt about it, but as I said above - there's a limit. At the moment, we're essentially scratching the surface of battery tech, and electric motors are already something like 90% efficient compared to the average ICE efficiency of only 20% or so. The most efficient ICE in the world is still only something like 50% efficient. That's a massive amount being lost to noise, heat etc.

So why batteries? B/C the politicians say so. I don't trust the politicians nor do I think batteries are the solution to any problem, do you? The link between politics and automobiles is undeniable and it's usually not in the best interest of 'the people' but the career of said politicians.

The subsidies etc are simply because the technology is underdeveloped and at the moment, very expensive.

You could have the best EV in the world but if it cost $1,000,000 then Joe Public wouldn't buy it. Likewise, if your EV did 300 miles on a charge and had decent performance and even cost a reasonable amount but crumpled in a crash and had absolutely no creature comforts, then Joe Public wouldn't put their money into it either.

In order to find a compromise and produce EVs that are competitive with ICE cars, companies currently have to spend a fair amount of money, so to ensure this money is being used to good effect, subsidies allow Joe Public to buy them in great enough numbers that profits can be made, and if profits can be made then production can increase, economies of scale rises, price comes down, people buy more of them etc.

Far from EVs being subsidised because they're rubbish and nobody would buy them otherwise, they're being subsidised because they're good and manufacturers need people to know this.

You say that as if the manufacturers themselves are subsidising them, it sounds more like the polititians/government think its a good idea and are forcing it upon people with the use of tax payers money.

Remember back in the 80s when mobile phones were the size of a brick and cost an absolute fortune, did the government subsidise them so normal people could afford them? The answer is NO, but look where we are today, why?, because it was a good idea and it worked and has made lots of companies lots of money, as did the microwave, CD player etc.etc.etc.

Also I know some countries, like Norway I think, use water to generate all their electricity, but in this country wouldn't the CO2 just be coming out the chimney of the power station as apposed to your exhaust pipe?

Bruthasuperior has just highlighted a frightening thought aswell, say everybody drove an EV, can you imagine what would happen to the price of electricity, have you seen what the government has done with the price of a litre of fuel, if that happened to leccy, jesus h christ think what your home leccy bill would be like :scared:

It's because they cost much too much.

An EV with the same performance and size as a gasoline car costs anywhere between $10-$15k more... depending on how much range you give it (batteries).

However... if more people buy the cars, it finances development. Development lowers production costs. That's what happened with electronic fuel injection. Then with direct injection diesels. And now hybrids. And it'll make electric cars more affordable. I suppose the thinking at the governmental level is that they're kick-starting development by putting money into it.

And failing miserably. Market penetration is still poor, despite government intervention. You're not going to get a mass conversion to electric cars, not with the current transport infrastructure. Hybrids only made it because both Toyota and the US and Japanese government poured money into it. Toyota via selling at deep discounts... the governments through tax breaks. But hybrids still have poor penetration in markets where cars are already sold with smaller displacement mills. The cost-benefit ratio isn't quite there for all consumers, yet.

The cost-benefit ratio isn't there for electrics yet, either. Getting close, though, with the Leaf. But it may be decades before a sizable portion of our current fleet is converted... if ever.

The CO2-electrical source argument is a little misleading. Yes, you still get emissions from coal-sourced electricity, but the emissions per mile is much lower, since coal-fired plants take advantage of economies of scale.

The problem is... renewable-sourced electricity is expensive. And not maintenance-free. People keep blagging on about how wind, water or solar costs are a one-time charge and the plants will run forever, giving off free electricity. They don't, and they won't. Eventually, though, when oil becomes expensive enough, they'll make economic sense. But that's quite a long ways away.

The real crunch will come not when gasoline becomes twice its current price (some markets are already there thanks to taxes. Civilization hasn't collapsed yet) but when electric power generation and oil-powered shipping become too expensive to operate.

Firstly, although they're a "luxury" and cars can also be considered as such, they're much less essential for most people than cars are. Let's face it, most people have to drive to get to their job, to enable them to pay for stuff like mobile phones.

The second reason is that phones have always been cheaper than cars regardless. Same with laptops, same with TVs. A significantly higher proportion of the population can afford a new phone or whatever than can afford to splash out on a new car technology.

That makes mobiles a bad example.

The UK government spent a good £250m on that eyesore the Millenium Dome in London (now the o2 Arena) and then millions more subsidising it since it wasn't making a profit. I'd much rather see millions go towards a technology that will improve transportation than a glorified tent by the Thames. I'm sure there have been similarly ridiculous and expensive publicly-funded projects in the States.

They aren't needed anyway. These companies have the resources to be able to develop EVs all on their own without a push from the government, believe it or not. Their prospects are lead by market demands. If the market isn't ready for EVs then the market won't bite. The government is artificially trying to encourage people to buy things they don't actually want or need.

This is why EVs have always been failures in the past. Nobody ever wanted them. The market honestly have moved more towards them recently, but the number of people who desire to have an all electric, limited-range car can still hardly be considered more than a niche.

And anyway, the government spends their money on far worse things.
Slippery slope is slippery. Luckily my Wolverines have no-slip soles so I'm stable on even the greasiest of surfaces.

Technology wasn't available to make them worth wanting. But one reason the technology wasn't there was because consumers weren't interested in advancing it anyway. Work was slow because there was very little demand, but though work was slow they were working because, of course, things might change in the future and having a broad portfolio of tech is always a good thing.

Only a niche of people are interested in these things - that's why it's a niche. Most of the market isn't nearly as interested as they are. Demand is low, and if it weren't for government envirocrap regulations and tax write-offs, the tech wouldn't be where is it now because the market is so small for EVs. Despite credits and rebates and whatever subsidies they're providing, these things simply aren't going to sell like hotcakes, and they won't for a long time.

You are right, cars are a luxury, thats why when I was aged 16-19 and couldn't afford one I had to use public transport to get to my work and back everyday, I survived.

You are right, cars are a luxury, thats why when I was aged 16-19 and couldn't afford one I had to use public transport to get to my work and back everyday, I survived.

Actually mobile phones were subsidised by the government in as much as governments bought huge amounts of them and government facilities like satellites and towers were opened up to the civilian market for use (much like SatNav systems are today).

Much the same where there was large demand for laptops from the public sector as well.

Not being alive then I can't say first hand I saw them, but I've had family in the civil service (Swansea is civil-service city) and yes it has been mentioned when talking about the old brick phones.

But, and I have tried, I can't find anything on the web to back that up so feel free to disregard it if you think you know better.

This is why EVs have always been failures in the past. Nobody ever wanted them. The market honestly have moved more towards them recently, but the number of people who desire to have an all electric, limited-range car can still hardly be considered more than a niche.

Waaaaay back in the day, electric vehicles were more popular than their steam and gasoline powered counterparts. Electric vehicles were typically targeted toward women, mainly for their ease of use compared to the others. But, as oil prices fell and Ford was able to master the production process, the cost of a vehicle with a combustion engine was so low that you would be silly not to choose one.

That's why the Volt exists. To be the bridge between what we know, and what we will eventually know as the norm for transportation.
 
Range and refilling have always and will always be issues with electrics.

There were electrics on the market available at good prices before governments started subsidizing the hell out of the market... but they simply weren't what people wanted. You were buying 1/10th the car with 1/10th the range and loooong refueling times for the same price as a gasser.

Mobile communications were partially supported by governments, but that's because they also used them. The same with the internets... it was in the military's best interests to have a data communications system that spanned the country (and then, the globe).

What use does the government have for electrics? They can use them in certain fleets, but not in others. There are some military applications, but these are limited.

People sometimes say that we're still on the upcurve of development for electric drive systems compared to gasoline... but electric motors and electronics have been under continuous development for decades, since they're used in more things than just cars.

All we can hope for is that economies of scale bring down the cost. This works for the electronics and motors, but the batteries are still a big question mark. They're getting cheaper, but we have such a glut of new battery suppliers in the market hoping for a slice of the pie that we might not see the true supply price until the electric car battery market stabilizes and a clear winner emerges in the battery war.
 
Well, they had a few Volts available in Chicago to sit in, and a few you could ride in, and I have to say that I came away far more impressed with the vehicle than I anticipated. I had only seen a few Volts previously in person, one on the road, and one on a show stand, but being able to walk up to one, open it up, and sit in it, it was definitely a pleasant surprise.

The first noticeable thing is that the car is bigger than the photos make it look. The overall stance of the vehicle is quite low at the front, and rather tall at the rear. The black strip that runs from the A-pillar to the C-pillar is a very strange design touch, and I've yet to figure out what the point of it is exactly. It was a magnet for finger-prints, I can tell you that. The rear of the car was a bit more odd than I had expected as well, dropping off suddenly, and being awfully flat. The tail-light design was interesting, however, and certainly made the strange back end a little more appealing.

Inside, I was struck by how normal it was. The seats were extremely comfortable both front and back, and I would argue that they were some of the best I had sat in throughout the day. The driving position actually reminded me a lot of the way a lot of '90s Japanese cars were. It is a strange explanation, but I think most of you would understand.

The center stack, and it's relative lack of buttons, however... That is going to take some getting used to. I didn't really mind it just tinkering around, but I feel like it could be both confusing and distracting having to live with it every day. You have to know exactly where your hand is going, or you have to stare at the dash as you fiddle with the HVAC controls. The touch screen was responsive, and rather pretty. When we went for a ride, it was showing the data in real time, and certainly is a fancy way of showing off to your friends when driving about.

Speaking of the ride, I'd have to say that it is ultimately the biggest selling point for the car. It is eerily quiet in there, and very strange being in a car where the only road noise is a slight whirrr from the engine and the tire noise. Granted, we were riding in the car inside a building and never went over 15 MPH, but I was impressed. I'd really like to take the car out on the highway to see what it is like at 80+ MPH, as it would likely push my assumptions further to see if it really is the Jesus car like I assume.

All in all, I'm pretty impressed with the Volt. I would happily spend $42,000 of my own dollars to own one, as crazy as it may sound.
 
Did you sit in the back seat with the front seat positioned for a 6 footer? If so how was it?

That is a bold statement to make without actually having driven the car. And I expect every car ever to be smooth on an indoor surface. Go karts are smooth on indoor tracks.

I personally feel you may have been duped by a well planned experience to make you think you have experienced enough to think the Volt is worth it, but I need to enjoy a car. A ride-along on polished concrete at parking lot speeds isn't the way to find out about a car, unless you don't care much about substance. In short, I need a test drive before I will accept this car is worth that hefty price tag.
 
Having ridden in a Volt I can tell you it feels like a normal midsized car on the road. It feels like a slightly less craptastic Cobalt, so I assume it feels exactly like the Cruz then (haven't been in a Cruz). I would be curious to drive one but due to company policy I could drive the one my buddy had, only sit shotgun.
