Conan O'brien

The impression I've getting before the shiitake hit the fan, Conan is too hip, too witty, too edgy(which is really a joke) for Tonight Show. Leno is/was too damn good as the host of Tonight's Show.

I only caught the tail end of Carson's 'Tonight' run, so for me, Leno=Tonight's. And while I like that show, Conan's show can be so much better, just not on Tonight Show format.

Since I like both hosts, I feel bad for everyone involved.

This whole "Tonight", "late night" and time slot arguing just seems all like silly politics to me, probably because I'm not American.

All I know is it seems Conan is out of a job for a while, which is a shame as he is my favorite followed by Letterman then Leno (I like Leno better when he is around cars).

I'm American, it's silly

I don't know the reason behind it but Leno moved on.
So if his new show gets cancelled, why does Conan and his crew get screwed?

As a matter of fact The Tonight Show is currently the only NBC program I watch.

I didn't watch Leno before, I won't now.
I'll go back to Letterman for now.

Conan, take the 30+ million dollars, move on to Fox or where ever and I'll watch.

Leno should have a car show.
I'd watch that.

Jay
(I like Leno better when he is around cars).
I thought Leno had an opportunity that he blew right here. He knows and loves cars. America doesn't have anything remotely close to our own Top Gear or Best Motoring or whatever. There will be shows that focus on a car, but they aren't fun.

When Jay built his own track and was taking the celebrity leaderboard concept from Top Gear I thought for sure he was heading in this direction. When the show came on I watched it and was sorely disappointed. It was just standard Tonight Show stuff and when they did the driving thing the course looked like it was designed by an amusement park mini-golf designer. Swirls painted on the tarmac and an Al Gore figure jumping out at you? What the hell was that?

Jay needed a car show that took the cars serious and the commentary light. There was an interview from Qore with him about his gig on the Gran Turismo PSP commentary and that was what convinced me that he could do a fun, but informative car show where he can talk about them with eth same pacing and style he does interviews. If you listen to his comment about her Volvo at the end you can see how he can have fun with it and mock the vehicles: "Oh, a Volvo. I've been looking for a new boat anchor."

Too bad he went for the same old variety show style he had been doing for years.

Well, I guess I'd look at it this way: Conan is causing a ruckus on his way out, showing how many fans he has, and how many he will be taking with him wherever he goes. It is deeply unfortunate that he is being forced out after fewer than eight months on the show, but its really NBC's own suicide. That means the kids won't watch Jay, and that means they probably won't watch Jimmy, and that means its the end of NBC Late Night.

Louis C.K. (comedian, former writer for Conan) made a good point the other day - The Tonight Show is for old people. Why the hell would Conan even want it in the first place? Having to change his entire format to do it? The Tonight Show was very un-Conan, to be frank. Its kinda painful watching the show, knowing what he would be saying if it was Late Night, only to have some dry/lame "safe" joke laid on top of it.

I kinda want him to go to cable. That way he can really let loose.

Its all about money. A prime time drama cost $3 mil to make. One Leno show costs $400 grand. The reason Conan is out is his ratings are terrible. No one is watching.

Like Louis C.K. said "Why the hell would Conan even want it in the first place?
It was a bad fit from the get go.

I watched some of his show last night where he sang his NBC bosses were Morons and it just came off as a cry baby complaining. Time to move on Conan. You've got 30 million reasons to leave.

Yeah, I haven't been watching Conan at all. I got on the early shift at work + it just hasn't been that much of show from what I've seen. I just think Conan is all wrong at that slot, on as the host of Tonight Show.

I didn't know Jay did some car related shows. That would've been gold. 👍

But the kids never were watching Jay. If Jay goes back to the Tonight Show and gets the same ballpark ratings as when he left, it is already a net gain for NBC.
Don't get me wrong: This primetime fiasco is entirely NBC's fault, as is the shoddy attempts at damage control after the fact; and they screwed up big when they signed Conan on in the first place without even bothering to look at the inner turmoil that the contract was inevitably going to cause. However, Conan wasn't performing up to snuff himself, and he really isn't coming off well (to me at least) by dragging this out when his low ratings partially contributed to the end result in the first place.

I just had an idea:

NBC should keep this going, for as long as possible, and never reach a solution. Ratings are way up for both Jay and Conan. Maybe its all a secret plot to get us to watch. Zucker really is a dark witch with black magic powers from hell!

Did you guys see the new Bugatti Veyron mouse character? NBC won't put it on hulu because it's too expensive.

Maybe he bought it with his $33 million.

Now the question is will he drive it to Fargo to host Y-94. 💡

Two things I see happening.

1. They make Conan pay for the car by fining him.

2. An executive walks away with the car and says, "Thanks for the awesome car, Conan!"

NBC obviously didn't buy it, at least without their approval first since everything has to get approved first. Not to mention they probably just borrowed it anyways.

There was suppose to be Top Gear America but it was canceled last minute. They made a pilot but it never aired. I think it'd be great to see him as one of the hosts. Him, Tanner Foust, and some random James May type of guy.

Hopefully, CoCo would return around same time slot if he ever gets another gig on another network. Can't really stay up too late for work. I really only watch the interviews, id probably be asleep by the time the musical guests are playing.

But the thing is, Conan drives an old Taurus. Leno was supposed to be Mr. Top Gear guy. In my opinion, Leno sullied the Tonight Show by bringing a President on the air. That was like the beginning of the end. I really can't believe NBC execs are so stupid that they can't think of a good format for him. Would BBC sue them or something if they copied the Top Gear format exactly (ie, production 1, talk, news, production 2, guest, finish production 1)?

Well, the Tonight Show is just for old people. That's the only way I can look at it. I'd love to hear what the numbers were for downloads of Conan via Hulu over the past few months, but I imagine that NBC/Universal wouldn't count those as viewers for the show. Conan just caters to a radically different type of viewer, and that is more than evident as his show goes into free-reign mode these last few episodes. Masturbating Bear is back. Its only a matter of time before we have FedEx Pope.

I don't think old people would want a Top Gear thing either. They're old. They need their sleep.

People don't sleep in primetime, silly.

And, no, 45 is not old enough. Team Leno is like wrinkletits old.

ABC news reported that NBC and Conan have reached a deal and Friday will be his last show. He and his crew get 45 mil to go away. They didn't say if he couldn't go to another network or not. I'm going to watch those last 2 shows. That Bugatti video was hilarious.

I would, I'm 45.
Is that old enough though? :)

I beg to differ, man. Brad is right, Tonight Show is for people like me, and we do generally need the sleep. :P

Edit: Sorry, missed the entire page 5...... rookie.

I'm shocked that it came to an such quick end for Conan. I'd be rooting for his comeback, hopefully around September. NBC didn't impress me here, but I still like Jay.

Look forward to see what Conan does when he returns, it'll be geed whateever it is. :)

Not in place of The Tonight Show, but it should have been Jay's new show in prime-time, or even just a weekly show. Jay should not have been handed a prime-time Tonight Show clone with the mini golf equivalent of a driving challenge randomly thrown in.

I just keep trying to think of what I'm watching at 10p every night, and the last thing I think of is Jay. Weird. I'd almost always watch Conan's monologue and the first couple of skits, but that was always because I had to be up at the crack of dawn the next day.
