Now if you'll excuse me, I'll get back to scouring AutoTrader for 15 year old British cabrios I'll never actually buy.

A confession I can kinda link in with this. I've been trawling eBay and Autotrader for 90's buses. For a long time I've wanted to buy one, strip it out and travel the continent in it.

Sounds like the basis for an Indie film, however I have a feeling if you were in it would be a lot more interesting than a normal one.

You guys in the states can buy cars for prices so low it's ridiculous. I've been dreaming of a 2JZ since I was 8, but if you want to buy one here that's imported and that has all its taxes paid you are paying close to $90k. Yes, you read that right. Car prices here are retarded.
States? I live in Australia mate, prices are still not brilliant here.

You do not, I repeat, DO NOT want a sports car for your first car. It'll end in a crash.

My first car is liable to be a 1995 Ford Taurus. It's going to be damn fast when I get the transmission fixed. And that, knowing how often I ignore common sense, worries me. I quite like life, you see, and if I had anything faster than this Taurus, I can guarantee right now that I'd crash it and injure myself.

Get a cheap and reliable car. You will thank yourself. Because you'll be alive.
What do you think I am, hopeless? I dont want to drive my parents twin turbo even though I apparently can due to the speed and power issue. My dad had a $20 000AUD first car which was some Ford thing that did wheelies. He never crashed it due to the fact that he liked it, looked after it and having payed for all of it he respected it. If I got a crap car which I didnt pay for I think I would have a higher chance of crashing it just because I dont care about it. I can see where you are coming from but my inner ricer/ hoon died off a few years back.

Fun fact kids: there's no point wasting your time trying to persuade everyone that wants a twin turbo Supra as a first car that it's a bad idea. Just sort of... smile and nod. You'll save yourself a lot of time. I managed to get the hoovering done today just by ignoring a few such posts.
Dont....want....twin....turbo.....

Not all kids are ricers, I can still be sensible while buying a somewhat reasonable car.

It's not so much the speed, but what goes on inside your head. I can almost guarantee that you are more likely to get into an accident with a Miata than with one of those utes you have down there, even if the ute is much faster.

I am, however, going to give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume you're going to be a responsible driver. There will still be that feeling in the back of my head that you are going to crash. I have ridden along with my brother 90% of the time he's ever driven. I can safely say that he, despite being an awesome driver, will almost certainly crash soon, by mere virtue that he gets worked up behind the wheel so much. And it's not just him.

But, I digress. If you post a thread about how you crashed your car, I will direct you to this post and I will point it out with flashing letters.

EDIT: Here, let me rephrase: if you get a sports car, you will think "Ooh, I have a sports car" and you will almost instinctively drive faster. This is not me picking on a kid who's barely younger than me, it happens to every single person in my family, from my mom's SLK, to my uncle's Viper.

I should check up on the prices of them, I dont want to look like a hoon/dick because I drive an older holden with P's on them, it is never a good look when I see a P plater in one of those older commo's.

And just how do you think P plates look on a Japanese sports car of any description? The stereotype would still be a young hoon/dick, but with the added negativity of being perceived as some Fast & Furious wanna-be. It doesn't matter what car you own, P plates will make it look crappy in some way shape or form.

How could a P Plater afford a brand new metrosexual Saab anyway?

Because the parents take into consideration when they buy a new family car with a teenager in the family.

Hence why I roll around in an NA 850 estate, instead of a T5 or R.

Maybe but in my opinion I see less of a hoon in a Japanese car even though they do exist in Japanese cars. When I see one of those old Commo's, the hoon is what I see, I cant help it, you may see the same in a Japanese car. I like the 300zx because it looks nice, runs well overall and you dont see a huge amount of P platers driving them which helps it not look so silly. I probably wont even end up getting one but I will see.

Probably good to end this now guys.

Less funny than Cougar Town???
Haven't seen it. But considering that THE BIG BANG THEORY needs a laugh track to tell its editors when to use the laugh track, it would have to be pretty darn bad.

But even then, Courtney Cox is hotter than that Sheldon guy (ew!), so COUGAR TOWN wins by default.

I will in no way be linked to Cliff Richard.

I'm close enough to Liverpool to come fire my Angry Bee Gun at you!

I didn't say I was thinking to buy one as my first car. In fact, the MX-5 is topping that list at the moment.

Well I have been driving for over too years (not that long I know) but Liverpool Victoria (insurance company) seem to think that a 1.6 Mazda Mx-5 has too high performance for me to be insurable.

My work experience and leisure activities clearly mean nothing to them. :(

ok another confession so to speak.

I am absolutely bursting with confidence lately. Everything I do seems to just turn to gold.

Examples:
  • Current favorite band Gorillaz plans small live show with no advertising,
  • I manage to get tickets very cheap, nearest trainstation to me does a direct train to 0.4 miles from the club, at the absolute ideal times for me to get there (birmingham) and back
  • age 18 entry required (been 18 for 1 week for the day of the show)
  • Establishment does not send tickets, so had a one off reservation with tickets behind the bar
  • -
  • I have recently strengthened friendships with some of my most valuable friends, due to me having a car and a job. This has opened doors to enjoyable nights out and a real sense of being valued.
  • Recently split up with girlfriend, an amazing relationship came to an end but the weight off my shoulders made me feel like I could soar
  • Today broke the record for most 'product focus' items sold in one day at my work in a store
  • Getting on well with everyone I know, no problems, feeling open minded and ready for anything
  • I ran into my childhood sweetheart at a party. A girl who has been in the back of my head as someone I needed ever since I was about 10 years of age, opportunities here look bright
  • On saturday my friends and family are gathering to celebrate my 18th:)

These things are not so amazing individually but together, I just feel great.

I was planning to lead it to more of a, I fear that I am due some bad news or a bad thing happening

That's a nice assumption, but driver training & common sense play a bigger role. And I suspect that Legendary has been brought up by his folks to realize this if they won't buy him a car or let him drive a twin turbo one they own, thus causing him to appreciate his first car much more. My father was the same way, & I've yet to ever cause an accident through any of my cars.

Just because incidents have happened within your family don't speak for everyone else.

You could still crash that Ford of yours just as easily as Legendary could crash a 300ZX. It's all common sense about your limits & surroundings. I pretty much know my limits in my TL. However, when driving a Porsche, I start right back to the basics & remember exactly how I was taught to drive a 944. Slow & easy until I got that down, then just a little bit faster. Moronic teens don't know this. They think jumping into a Corvette will be the same as when they were in the driving school's Chrysler Sebring.

That's part of the reason I still have my cars today & why the little teenage girls are on their 5th cars before 21. No common sense when they were taught how to drive.

Thats so true. I can imagine that if someone leant me their Porsche or Ferrari for the day that I would be driving it very slowly to start of with just because I would be scared of how much power it does have. Cars will take getting used to and just flooring one the first day you get it is a bad idea. You sir, deserve some cookies :D.

Over the weekend, i went managed to get into a 19+ clubbing event. It was probably the riskiest thing i've managed to pull off. A friend of mine had to pass back his ID to me after he got into the club, mind you he was using someone elses ID as well. 19+ events are just so much damn better than all ages...alcohol really does make a big difference in the amount of fun you have. Even all the girls got better looking :)

The point I'm trying to get across is that it's almost entirely subconscious. Unless you are specifically driving slower, you will tend to go faster. It's not so much to do with common sense-

Never mind, actually. I've gotten my point across, and it's been countered by someone with driving experience. Nothing I can do anymore.

Anyway, l724, you will die a horrible and flamy death if you get a 300ZX. At the very least, it won't last for 6 months.

If you happen to get a 300ZX, and you keep it intact for 6 months, I'll give you a year of premium. <= Mark and note it.

The problem is the first time you do floor it you will be hooked on the power, and will thus do it often and sometimes in poor choice. Experience outweighs any amount of understanding or training... And just gets more apparent the more technical the car is to drive.

I'd like to echo these words.

Legendary, we all know it'd be cool rocking up to school or some other joint in a 300ZX, Porsche 944 or some other high powered but p plater legal car, but as Azureman said, you build up a tolerance for the acceleration and the Gs, and you'll start doing full throttle starts more and more, and in the end, it is going to get dangerous.

Besides that, the rozzers will pick on you on a sunday arvo because they havn't filled their quota and will pounce on anyone remotely suspicious. Getting constantly pulled for no reason gets very very tiring - ask someone I know of who has a show car Prelude on Ps.

I'd get something with less power and a more sorted chassis for a first car. The cars I really really want right now are a Pug 205 GTI, an E30 coupe and an MX5.
Then you can have a hoot in something that isn't too powerful, and goes under the radar.

I'm not saying you can't handle the power of a 300ZX, but I will say you can't 100% handle it. If you can 99% handle it, it only takes 100 stabs at the throttle....or about a months driving, for something to go wrong.

I will take that into account guys ^^.

I still need an idea of my budget, I wont know that for a while yet.

I have had a 3.8L V6 in a chassis less accomplished than a 300ZX and with less weight on the rear wheels for just over 3yrs without an accident, what do I win?:sly: Not that I'm saying it can't still happen, but I have well surpassed your 6 month time frame.:p

Isn't an MX-5 more dangerous, because it's much smaller, lighter and more lively?:odd: I think a 300ZX with it's normally aspirated 3.0L V6 isn't going to be scaring the crows away you know. I mean geez, that E30 is probably as powerful. What is this 300ZX, 160kw? How heavy is the car? 1400+kg? It's not exactly a supercar he wants. But the cops probably will target him more often. It's like I said to Legendary, he thinks a P plater in a Commodore carries a bad image? Not nearly as bad as one in a Japanese sports car.

Old, unfettled MX5s have no power. The idea behind them is keeping momentum and having smooth inputs.

The E30 - nahhh. A 318i having the same power as a 3L V6 in a Japanese sports car? Give over - even a 325 wouldn't be as powerful.

They are all dangerous because they are older. See videos of old station wagons going up against new small cars and the results are actually quite frightening. I'd say the 205 GTI is the most dengerous - have you seen how thick the A pillers are??? The are like toothpicks. :p

It's 9.15pm, I'm planning on goin' to bed at around 11.30 (due to GT4/P) and i've got a Biology and Maths-Extended Exam tomorrow (but I'm 14, the Maths is extremely easy and the science should also be fairly non-hard)

Even the fastest NB still would be a mid 16 second car. Now, an E30 325is would be mid 15s to low 16's, while the 300ZX NA, the Z32, would still be mid 15's or faster. A twin turbo will break into high 13's.

The big deal to the 300ZX is the torque and the image of being a sports car. More provocation to drive like a hoon than, say, the E30 which looks just fine cruising along at mild mannered speeds. Part of the image thing.

A 318i would be an ideal first car down there. Fairly simple, decent chassis, a back seat, enough power to not be a death trap for merging, and not a complete beater without any respect (such as a Tercel).

1: You are not 14.

2: My Taurus has the same engine yours has. While it has godlike torque, it's not very fast. And, it's not a sports car.

Ill be driving when I am 16 mate? Paulie has been driving from 16 (I would assume) and as he says, has not crashed. I am not saying I wont crash or anything, I am just saying I wont be driving when I am 14...

He's still not driving a sports car.

Look. What I'm trying to say is that if you recognize a car as a sports car, you will drive faster regardless of actual performance.
