Anything from Optimus Rhyme, MC Frontalot, SNMNMNM, or Dirt Bike Annie (fantastic band). mc chris also has some cool songs.

I'd have to say anything by And You will Know us by the Trail of Dead.

Carl.
I'll nominate DJ Champion, which is probably not known that much outside Quebec. (the name sounds a bit lame, but the music certainly isn't)

Hmmm, looks real good. I might have to buy his/their cd.

Solid Lifters
Blur - "Coffee and TV"

👍 👍 One of my favorite songs ever.

Haven't heard of him and I've lived here for a while.

Hey, have you heard of D-Natural? Quality Quebecois rap right there.

No, since I've never been that much into rap, unless the lyrics really catches my attention. At other times I'll find the background music brilliant, and then ruined onced the talking/singing begins... :indiff:

Have any samples?

For DJ Champion, it's not exacly mainstream, although you've probably heard it if you watched tv recently, "No Heaven", the 3rd sample on his site is in the latest Videotron ad (thanks to my girlfriend :p). The female singer is [SIZE=-1]Betty Bonifassi, who also did the Triplettes de Belleville soundtrack. It's a really good album to listen while driving or just relaxing.

@xcsti: Glad you like it!

Yep, it's here.

That video is awesome. 👍

It's a joke, really. A perfect example why French people really have no business trying to rap. It just sounds so stupid because half of the time they are trying to be English. It's hilarious.

If you're creative and go your own way, then go for it. But in Quebec, most of the time rap doesn't go like that...

(for the record, I am not a rap listener in the least bit)

D'oh!

I guess it's the kind of song about how he's made it to the top while "keeping it real", trying to pass as some kind of a star, only with a lot less budget for the clips...

At least Dubmatique were not that bad, and Loco Locass lyrics makes me smile (hey, you have to to give them some credits for putting the word "déguedine" in a song... but neither of them is my cup of tea, really. Some Mononc' Serge songs are gold, though. :D

My ex-girfriend grew up in France and she liked French rap a lot, much to my despair. The closest to rap I actually like listening to is some trip hop songs, from Massive Attack for example, otherwise I usually pass on it.

SRV2LOW4ME
Deftones - Rx Queen
Tragically Hip - Wheat Kings
Tragically Hip - Opiated

I think only Canadians would know the last 2

The Hip have been getting a little more popular in the states though... but I know what you're getting at... Too bad, cause alot of their older stuff rocks... Of which those mentioned are good... In fact, all of Raod Apples is way too under rated and deserves a serious listen...

Guys. Read the thread title.

Go read it again.

See the "not many people know about" bit?

Why are you nominating two of the best-known bands of the last 15 years in a thread that's about songs "not many people know about"?

Well, in his defence, at least as far as Tool goes, they never really got much radio/air time until they broke their last album with Schism... Their following is far more "cult" then it is mainstream, even if it is GREAT music...

The Patient

Ticks and Leaches

Parabol/Parabola

Forty Six and 2

And who could forget their original Opiate EP

All great songs, that had they been shorter, would likely have become more popular to the masses... Great songs...

Nirvana was over played, and in my opinion, and lacked any real musical talent... I mean come on, anybody can play that junk... No add the nasal rantings of a dope feind and there you go...

These are bands more so then songs, but deserve a listen

God Street Wine (improve/jam rock) Amazing version of Into the Mystic.

The Pocket Dwellers (hip hop/ jazz fusion) Real funky and pretty catchy.

Whiskeytown (Alt Contry) Ryan Adam's original band.

These are great albums most people haven't heard

The Tea Party: Splendor Solice (Kind of a new age Doors/Led Zeppelin sound... GREAT. Picture Jim Morrison singing for Zeppelin)

David Usher: Little Songs (Artsy kind of goth sounding music, also very good, Forest Fire and St Lawrence River are amazing songs)

Any how... If you can find any of these, give them a listen and see what you can come up with...

Canadian Speed, please discontinue your multiple posting. You've done this far too many times now, and the time-gap between posts makes this even more unacceptable. Utilise the edit button.

Ooh also wanted to throw in

Jeff Buckley- last goodbye
I'll second this. Anything by Jeff Buckley is worth listening to.

Anything by The Apparitions. They are brilliant, best album I've heard in a long time. Better than ANYTHING in the last few years, IMO.

Not sure how many people will have heard of this, since I've no idea how popular he is.

Van Morrison- Moondance

Jimmy Enslashay
Zlad! - Elektronik Supersonik
Zlad! - Anti-Christ (Both very funny songs.)
Intrepid - Impavid Warrior
Anything by Blue Onion :D

I'm a fan of that Intrepid track, remember? ;) How are they doing by the way?

I'm a big fan of the following bands...

Panic! At The Disco
Against Me!
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
The Go Team!
You Say Party! We Say Die!
Thunderbirds Are Now!
!!!
Captured! By Robots
Death Sentence: PANDA!
Wow, Owls!
Help She Can't Swim!
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!

But only because I like exclamation marks in band names.

How about some Elliott Smith? I'm pretty sure he's not very well known, even if he should be - really, really excellent songwriter.

It Doesn't Matter by Coleman Wilde. I believe it was used in a commercial in the 80s, but it is extremely hard to find, as I don't think the group Coleman Wilde had any albums released; I think the song was written for the commercial actually.

Jimmy Enslashay

3rd from me. Last Goodbye is great 👍

One of my favourite tunes: Outlines - Just A Lil' Lovin'
It's an awesome Broken Beat/Nu Jazz track, i really suggest listening to it.

Quantic Soul Orchestra - Transatlantic

4Hero - Black Gold Of The Sun London based 4Hero have created some truly gorgeous pieces and this remix of Rotary Connections' Black Gold Of The Sun is one of my favourites. Very memorably my introduction to Nu Jazz/Broken Beat too so a piece close to my heart :)

Burn Out - Cinematic Orchestra The best 'background tune' ever made and if you like tunes that follow the Nu Jazz genre and slowly build for 10 minutes then this is highly recommended.

crimson_menace
Also, Soul Coughing is pretty alright. It takes some getting used to, but it's cool if you give 'em a chance.
Yep 👍 Mike Doughty (the lead singer) did a solo album as well, worth a check-out

Seconded 👍

Seconded again. I think he might have two albums. My favorite song by him is "American Car".

I'm a big fan of the following bands...

Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Godspeed is quality, I love them.

Check out John Mayer Trio too. I never really liked John Mayer's solo work, but he pretty much plays straight up blues on this entire album, Mayer can shred on the guitar too, he sounds amazing in this album, Stevie Ray Vaughan-esque.
Songs:
John Mayer Trio - I Got A Woman <- A Ray Charles cover.
John Mayer Trio - Out Of My Mind

Greyboy Allstars - Mostly instrumental, but they play a mix of funk/jazz/hip-hop, they have an amazing saxophone and guitar player. If you're in the mood for something different. The only band I can compare them to is Soulive who should also be checked out if you've never heard of them.
Some Songs:
Greyboy Allstars - Panacea
Greyboy Allstars - Soul Dream
Greyboy Allstars - Fire Eater
Soulive - Cash's Dream
Soulive - Cannonball

I don't think The Flaming Lips are very unknown, but I've been hooked on their album The Soft Bulliten lately.

I'm sure I have more obscure music, I'll post more as I think of it.

The band is not at all obscure, but give it a chance:

Green Day - At the Library.

The first song off their first release in 1989. BJ wrote this when he was 17 or so.

Don't judge it until you've heard it, and then don't judge it until you can actually play the song on guitar. It's got the typical early Green Day sound, but the actual riffs are waaaaay more advanced than the pop they play on the radio now.

It's definitely a cool song not many people know about. Don't be hatin.

BTW, the Flaming Lips get my nomination for best album title with that one with the Pink Robots. What a hoot.

He had a trio, i missed that one. Thanks for the inform 👍 :dopey:

Integra Type R
RJD2 - The Horror, Ghostwriter (basically anything by RJD2)

DJ Shadow - Stem/Long Stem, Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain (basically anything by DJ Shadow)

👍

Ahh, good stuff. If you're into RJD2 and the new wave of electronica and downbeat:
Bonobo - silver
Boards of Canada - Hey Saturday Sun
Kid Loco - A Grand Love Theme
Kid Koala - Page 298 (i've never felt such emotion from a turntabilist)
Lovage - Strangers on a Train
Blockhead - Night Light
Plaid - B Born Droid
Goldfrapp - Crystalline Green
Soul Position (RJD2 & Blueprint) - Oxford You Really Owe Me
There's so much more to list, Prefuse 73, Jason Forrest, TRS-80, etc.... this is the kinda music I hunt for (40 gigs of music so far :scared: )

As for the more accessible/rock stuff try:
Dredg - Same ol' Road
Carpark North - Human
Minus the Bear - Lemurs, Man, Lemurs
Engine Down - Intent to Pacify
Isis - Altered Courses
VHS or Beta - Alive
Ratatat - Seventeen Years
Glassjaw - Must've Run All Day

Hip Hop:
A Tribe Called Quest - 1nce Again
Pharcyde - Otha Fish
Jurassic 5 - Concrete Schoolyard
Gang Starr - You Know My Steez

Some songs I strongly recommend:
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Moya
Schneider TM - Frogstears
Sigur Ros - Glosoli

donbenni
👍 Top tunes. Also love a bit of 'Jayou' by J5 and 'Ya Mama' by Pharcyde "Your mama's got an afro with a chin strap" etc., love it :dopey:

Haha, I just threw on Ya Mama. I love their style in Bizzare Ride II, it's just flat out fun 👍

Yes! I tell people about this and either they get turned off by the "John Mayer" in the title, or they know about it and don't like it because it's not the old acoustic John Mayer. He really is the man on the guitar though; you can tell that this is the kind of music that he really loves to play. People say he's a SRV rip, but who's not? I love the Hendrix cover ("Wait Until Tomorrow").

Anyone ever heard of the Kenny Wayne Sheppard Band? I can't exactly speak for his later efforts, but his CD Trouble Is is very cool. Also SRV-inspired blues rock, which is fine by me. He actually did release a pretty well known single now that I think about it called "Blue on Black".
