Crazy ads.

Aw, I was hoping this was going to be the kind of thread where we post funny ads.

But yeah, I'll admit the ads are looking a bit daft right now. They also bog me down when I'm browsing GTP while logged off.

Correction. It wasn't on mobile earlier, but it is now.

None on PC though.

Still getting them here (Android if it's relevant) - super intrusive KFC one, bottom of the screen ones, and even getting redirected to the Play store for betting apps without clicking anything :(

On PC I am getting them again when I go to the front page. Haven't seen them anywhere else though. (Again, this on PC)

I just logged into my GTPlanet account on several different devices and some got the bottom sticky ads while on others I haven't.

Devices that received no sticky adverts:
  • iPad A1822 (iOS 11.0.3)
  • Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (Windows 10 Pro)
Devices that did receive sticky adverts:
  • Blackberry Z30 (BBOS 10.3.3.1463)
  • iPhone SE (iOS 11.0.2)
  • Sharp Aquos Crystal (Android 4.4.2)
  • Nextbit Robin (Android 7.1.1)
  • LG Fx0 (Firefox OS 2.1.0.0)
  • Nokia Lumia 1020 (Windows Phone OS 8.10.14234.375)
No idea if this will help any, but I just thought it was interesting that some devices had ads that others did not.

I haven't been hit with the KFC one yet, but the Ulta one is constantly showing up (on mobile.)

The desktop has adblock primarily because my budget won't allow for Premium until at least next college semester, life of a semi-broke student I guess.

Getting these on mobile as well, Android.

Haven't seen KFC/ Ulta, mostly been for new Infini cars and cleaning products.

Edit* scratch that, just seen Ulta, noice. 👎

Okay, you win, I'm paying to get rid of the ads.

In all honesty, I kinda hope this wasn't your intention. The site ran so smooth for so long... And then last month everything just got commercial. I'm paying money because I want to communicate with my friends without this huge lag all the time. Espe........cial.........ly wh........en........... I'm ty...p...ing. Pretty bummed out that we got slammed by commercialism.

Eight minutes later and I still can't buy the Premium membership.... because these ads are bogging my laptop down so much that I can't find the screen. Dude, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from business school. You're website is in a bad way. You don't want this kind of frustration with all the new traffic you're going to be seeing in the next couple months. I hate to sound cocky, or arrogant, but I'm not wrong here. I'm trying to help you. If you don't do it right, somebody else will.

As you can see from @Jordan's messages earlier in the thread, no, that was not the intention:
I'm sorry you guys are having trouble with them; we are using a new ad provider and I'm working with them to figure out how to prevent these banners from being displayed when you're signed in to your account.
We're getting closer to a solution with the ad provider to disable these; it could be implemented as soon as today or tomorrow, so hang tight.
Unfortunately these things happen from time to time, especially with new advertisers. We do have preset ad areas on the site templates that adverts are not supposed to break out of - precisely because we want GTP to be as nice as it possibly can be. Some advertisers take the piss, and we do our best not to work with advertisers like that.

@Jordan is currently away in Italy at the GT Sport launch, but will attend to these issues when he returns.

So you have been on this site for 3 years and you want to say the owner is trying to take advantage it's members? There is no intention at all. This website is great and yeah occasionally problems happen with ads. It happens it gets fixed and boom the site is still great. I haven't been premium except for one year and the last couple months. I have never had a problem with ads being a major problem and if they were they were fixed. I've been here for 6 and shall years.

There have also never been ads that have been this obtrusive for the whole amount of time I've been here either. What is going on here is that you have an inability to notice how bad these actually are, because you're actually a premium user. This site is becoming difficult to use on mobile, so much so that I try to avoid actually using it if I'm not on my desktop. I know that @Jordan is working on it, but you're commenting on something while having no idea how it's affecting people. It's all out of frustration, I assure you, and some people are just more patient than others.

I didn’t even realize my premium had ran out. I showed that damn Ulta add.

Seriously though, it’s sucks and I hope it gets fixed soon for all of you civilians. :D

Just noticed, i'm not receiving them anymore on my iPod Touch! Anyone else no longer seeing them on mobile?
Just give it time, it will be back soon. It’s still there for me. I don’t mind ads but I can’t type a post up on mobile, takes ages because of them and also pages seem to crash more frequently now. Never had that before.

Evil Within 2 ads are taking up the full background and launching a video over the forum text. Stopping/killing the video still results in the page scrolling back up to origin every 10-ish seconds.

EDIT: Better with Firefox, the video doesn't auto pop-out. Problem is with Chrome, perhaps?

EDIT EDIT: Even worse on mobile (W8, Chrome), site unusable when that advert loads.

Image: Firefox, not a lot of forum in there when it first loads :)

I understand the need for the adverts, but this one seems a bit over the top. I clicked alerts to drop down the list of threads with updates, and I couldn't actually follow any of the links. Instead I was taken to the advert site. I had to scroll down the page a bit to make sure the drop down was over the actual forum content (see above screenshot).

Like the two above me, The whole background The Yogurt Within ads are really distracting and obtrusive, I've also had the issue of trying to click my alerts only to be taken away from :gtplanet:

Call of Duty is doing the same today that The Evil Within 2 was yesterday.

@Jordan (or @Famine, as he reference that Jordan is busy elsewhere this week) is this a conscious GTPlanet design change or are the ad providers overstepping literal and figurative boundaries?

Jordan already answered that:

With Jordan being out of the country for the GT Sport launch, he hasn't exactly had a lot of time to work on this. I'm sure once he's back home, it will all be taken care of.

So, just got a random pop-up ad that took up the whole screen.
Tried to back out and my browser shut down.
I'm on my phone. I literally just check here and FB through the app on my phone.
I was scrolling through Slipz GTS review on the front page when it happened.

Another thing that annoys me is ads that change size as they load, so when you're reading an article, the paragraph you're reading is scrolled out of screen.

I've been thinking about going premium for a while but I won't do it for the wrong reason.

I am sorry for all the problems, guys. Some of these ads are indeed quite a bit more aggressive than what I was expecting from our new partner; I will be having a chat with them on Monday.

I suspect the fact the "sticky" ads were still showing on news and article pages is what was causing some of the confusion here. They were a bit more work to remove, but I have implemented their removal for logged-in users across the site today. If you are signed in to your account and see them anywhere, please let me know. Please include information about your device/browser and a screenshot if possible.

According to the data, you are wrong. Average session length has increased 28%, average pages viewed per visit has increased 33%, and the bounce rate (the percentage of users who view only one page) has decreased 8% since September 1. These are industry standard metrics for user experience, and I would expect all to be negatively impacted if the experience was so poor. I also use the site with the same ads a regular visitor would see, and have not experienced these problems.

If you don't do it right, somebody else will.
Perhaps they will, but other sites in this space have not been doing so well, shutting down or selling off, and the second-largest racing game forum has over seven ads per page (we have five). Of course, if a Summa Cum Laude business student laments paying $1 per month to support this type of community, it raises the question of whether or not it is economically viable at all.

Thank you Jordan!
Just give it time, it will be back soon. It’s still there for me.
From the time you posted this to Jordan's latest post here, I never got them again. Not sure why you still did when I didn't, and I don't even use adblock on mobile.

I don’t mind ads but I can’t type a post up on mobile, takes ages because of them and also pages seem to crash more frequently now.
That's how it did for me as well, be thankful it ain't like those Wikia sites, they're far worse! At least it's resolved now! 👍

Hope they are gone for good.
One other bug related to ads, I think, is that on iOS devices (at least) as the page loads, if you were listening to music or watching video in the background it will stop. It doesn’t happen every time you load a page, but at least 50 percent of the time. This was not the case before these new ads appeared, so if possible please look into it as well. Thanks for doing your best @Jordan, the community here is great and you guys rock. Reminds me of how WMD1 was during pCARS 1 development.
