Someone's greeting when I entered a lobby the other day was "Fast car seeking better driver". Not really an acronymable team name, but I enjoyed the sentiment. Reminded me of those 90s news paper dating adds!

One of my buddies once put an ad in the local paper which read something along the lines of:

He's married now. The best man read this ad out as part of his wedding speech :lol:

I abuse that sometimes... Someone is right on my tail and doesn't pass or keeps the distance but bumb draft then I deliberately take a wider line in a turn and lifts to make it while I see him run off in the mirror

Note - below sounds preachy, not aimed at @RacingGrandpa but conscious that other folks frequent here looking for info and the original question from @Supergtp was asking for advice on "clean racing".

Don't confuse someone on your tail and not passing with "slow" or "incapable of passing" with someone who is just racing clean. A huge problem on GT is that drivers behind assume that they are faster and barge through while those in front assume that a driver behind who is not trying to overtake is slower. I will regularly sit behind the car behind and follow his lead if he is holding a good line and setting a good pace. Most times you'll get in front and find you were not actually faster but the draft was helping you, or perhaps following his good line was helping to pace you. Instead of going with that flow you'll waste your time and his in fighting for a place and allow the cars behind to catch you both. Anyway, even if you are faster and right up behind him you can't just push him off the track out of frustration which is what usually happens. If you can't find a clean overtake then you can't take and the car in front has the right to assume a defensive line on the track so long as he is keeping pace and not brake checking. Last night at Bathurst I took a 2nd place and a 4th where the last lap of each race was me defending from a car behind. The 2 races had cars all over my tail but I took a fast yet defensive line while they appreciated that, tried to go around the outside or push me into a mistake but there was no contact, no barging, not dive bombing. It was both pressure and a pleasure to compete.

The best race I had at Brands last week was 4 beautiful laps of me on another guys tail both going like we were on rails. We were only in 7th and 8th respectively. I had a 1.2 second lead on the car behind but was only .2 sec off the car in front of me entering Hawthorns on L2 so I intentionally eased off just enough to let the car in front go into the bend without worrying about defending. That way he kept speed instead of taking a slower line which in turn helped me keep speed. If I had been on his tail and attacking I reckon we'd at the very least have lost .5 secs and brought the car behind me back into my draft. From my experience most drivers would have pushed into that corner and tried to force the car ahead off or make a move up the inside risking time lost in the battle or more likely one or both of the cars going off.

As for Bathurst this week, DR B / SR S lobbys are generally very clean. Good tight racing with the odd annoying bump but I've scored top 5 finishes in nearly every race. Nice to see a finishing sheet where nearly every driver scored a Blue S (and no Red).

Dropped my time at Bathurst. From a 14.6(Mustang) to 14.0(Atenza).

Utter mayhem(bump that... barnyrad... yes, barnyard bedlam-not the daggone game) end of lap 2, from The Rydges Hotel to Murray's Corner. Picked up 4 spots from cars spinning off.

In race C they put the penalty payment area in a very bad place, right before the biggest braking point, so when the corner starts its packet with ghosts and regular cars, whish they could improve it.

Yes penalty zones are in the wrong place and/or too near to a corner (exit or entry) on a number of tracks and this just adds to the problems they naturally cause too.

Like at Monza you end up with ghosts under the trees and sometimes they are hard to spot right up until the moment you arrive upon on them, when of course they turn solid again and you hit them. :banghead:

I agree with everything you said. I never uses this trick in a situation like that, that would merely open the door and let him through ( which is what I do if he is clearly faster than me, that way I gain speed from his slipstream and can gain pace from seeing his line) I only do it when someone is following my every move but doesn't have the speed or race craft to pass. Pass cleanly that is, because if I have a trailer like that behind me for any long time it will almost certainly end with me being pushed off.

Edit: when I am the one behind and I want to pass I usually moves side to side to show myself and add pressure without any touching. Most of the time that makes the driver Infront nervous enough to make a mistake that I can use. If not, then he deserves to keep the spot.

hey, i was in a couple of your races yesterday on my US account 'GT-Fred-West'... i think i've got worse as the weeks gone on.. now, rather than concentrating on my own line and pace, i'm more concerned about the people around me. And i'm also just hearing splashing water and rain in my sleep :crazy:

3 times last night I had a car on my tail on Conrod that all made the same mistake. To be fair, with it being so long and the draft so strong it is difficult to defend if the car behind gets a good run but if by the left hander they have not made the move they really should ease off. I kept left forcing them outside if they wanted to try. 2 came out from the draft at the 100 m marker and misjudged their speed so ended up in the gravel. 1 went wide around me (I was impressed actually) but was in totally the wrong place on the Chase's right hander trying to make the move stick so ended up losing it there. All could have just accepted that while they had the draft I had the line and keep the position they had.

In fact, I would say that the biggest improvements in my racing in the last 3 or 4 weeks are A) learning to keep my cool and trust my own driving when under pressure from behind. Particularly holding a fast inside line and forcing the car behind to go around the long way. So long as I've had confidence to take the tight inside line, perhaps brake harder or drop an extra gear nearly every instance of it has ended up with the car behind overshooting the corner on my outside once they came out of my draft. And B) learning exactly what I posted above and be patient in waiting for the right time to move, give the car ahead space and respect and sometimes accept a good position rather than screw up both your race and the other person's.
 
Jumped onto the mountain for the first time this week, ignored the META Mégane, can't stand the FF cars in Gr4, especially with their crazy power advantage, and went with my trusty Aston. Managed some quali laps between the races, but nothing special.

Started the first race 13th, made a bit of a mess of it, got distracted trying to stop the brake pedal squeaking and crashed, ended up 14th.

Started 10th second time round, and thanks to people falling off the road, was up to 6th, before getting punted off by a French guy in a Huracan on lap 2, dropped me back to 14th thanks to the reset waiting until I was almost back on track to kick in. Made it back up to 10th by the finish, and got an apology from the Huracan, don't think it was deliberate, but was a big mistake from that far back.

3rd race was better, started 11th and pretty much watched people crashing out in front of me, think I drove through three ghosts in the esses on lap 1. Didn't have to make a single overtake, but finished 5th behind four Méganes, so basically a win. Clean race bonus on this one, down about 1000 DR, stayed at 99SR though, and realised I've now spent more time at DR C than D, so that's a bit of a win as well.

Yeah on Tokyo I've been surprised by cars appearing out of nowhere at the penalty zone. With all the cars going into the hairpin in lap 1 and a bunch serving penalties, there is so much spray that ghosted cars are completely invisible, yet they have a tendency to appear at various speeds right at the turn in point. Survive the chaos up to the hairpin and get slapped with a penalty for the next lap because of road blocks randomly appearing where you thought there was a gap. And if you brake extra early to compensate for the appearing ghosts, you get punted into a reset :lol:
 
No races this morning before I head out, still copying :banghead: It takes over 40 minutes now, currently at 89% with only 4 minutes to go for the 8 AM race. Started the update at 7:25 AM. Worst update system ever!

I compiled my list of best times so far in the rain. Two races per car, except the Huracan which I raced most of Monday (hence the unicorn best lap with optimum drafting) and the cars that are practically the same (Lexus 16/17, BMW Power/Walkenhorst). So the variation in lap times there is about the error margin.

My DR has been dropping from testing all the FR cars as the spread is pretty big. FR cars are generally 2 seconds slower per lap in the rain on Tokyo. The Lancer and Atenza are the most useless when you don't have someone to draft. A fast wheel driver can still keep up with the front ish with them yet those are the ones that get bored from doing casual 2:12 laps out front in the Ford lol. I can keep up with the back with FR cars and beat a couple Fords there. However as the evening went on it pretty much turned into a Ford GT race with my finishing position dropping back. Finishing before all the other 'other' cars was still very do-able.

Tried my hand at Race A and had loads of fun.

Until I went for a quick run today and ran into a user called Kromagg. I should’ve stopped trying to overtake him, but he managed to draw a huge amount of penalties on me, out of the blue (rammed me and hit the wall, those things), running my SR to 64.

It’s ridiculous how one race can get your SR down so much, specially when I’m consistently at 99.

Now it’s off to hell for a couple of days trying to recover from that, I’m so deflated

Sometimes it feels like I'm rolling dice at the last corner. Will I hit a ghost appearing out of nowhere, will the ghost hit me, are unghosted cars on the same wavelength and can sense a ghost also... Kind of crazy.

Generally (and fortunately) I see people take the corner at extra caution instead of aggressively driving through it and hoping for the best. It likely wouldn't take much for it to turn into a war zone.

I gave a shot at Race C with the madlad 650S, no tcs, brake balance -1 (I think it's weird but I'm comfortable with it) and it's honestly not... that bad? :confused:

I'm not sure why so many people say the 650 is mediocre. Through the twisty half of To-key-oh it was super planted, easy to drive and predictable if you don't do anything stupid, and I didn't even have practice! I've never raced on the rain in GT Sport, I was feeling the limits out on the race.

Top end was decent. Not stellar but I was able to keep up with the META Ford GTs on the corners and the slipstream was good enough to not fall behind them. I could overtake them by the end of the straight if the gap was 1 second or less. :D also it sounds crisp :lol:👍

I ended 3rd in my race, started from the back because of my lack of experience, didn't want to ruin anyone's race. Picked up about 6 positions via penalties, spins, punts and more penalties, and I closed the gap to the GT in 3rd with some of my most consistently quick driving yet :cheers:

Had a good battle with an M3 GT (yes, apparently that car is still a thing :confused:) but I had the upper hand in corners and the straights so I was able to pull away. At the last corner, he outbraked himself and and then I went on the inside, but he stupidly tried to come back as I was turning. I kept my (very narrow) line through the corner (had my two right tyres on the right of the curbing) and he still tried to cut me off, I had nowhere to go and he hit my front left and spinned himself out, got me a 3 second penalty (:confused:) and he ended 7th. Gap to 4th was good enough to not be a factor.

I apologised just in case after the race, although I don't think it's my fault. I didn't save the replay sadly but I felt bad about it, even though there was nothing I could really do. I have rights to the track too, mate :lol:

These "colliding with another car" penalties are absurd on the Tokyo track. Even the most inconsequential contact gives you a two second penalty if the other car touches the wall at all. I got one on @Voodoovaj just now, and he got one on me at the end of the race which ruined his race, but neither of us actually lost time from the incidents.

The wall contact penalties are also ridiculous. I find them to be very inconsistent as well.
 
I hate myself for continuing to do the a race. My SR is in free fall lol although tbh it was a little higher than it should probably have been after the nord a couple weeks ago, but still.... i am getting dived in t1 or the last turn very consistently this week and on the odd chance that doesn't happen, i make a huge mistake cuse i am to worried about whats going on behind me. I really like this combo, but i am not seeing the folks i usually see and these unfamiliar names are not going on my friends list to say the least lol

The wall penalties are awful. A bounce is ok, even though you screw up the people behind you. Slight contact, ie scraping / getting sucked to the wall will trigger a delayed 5 sec penalty. While getting punted, spun out and stopped dead against a wall, have another 5 second.

I've got the 5 sec wall penalty on a straight for driving too close to the wall lol. So far, still only one clean race bonus. Breathe on the wall and it's gone, yet usually it's an SR Down or multiple in the first lap. Most of the time without anything happening, slight contact in T1 or at the penalty zone, SR Down. It should simply flash SR Down when you click on entry for race C!

Anyway, after Monday, no problem staying at high SR.S while racing from the back, after lap 1 it's always fine. Lap 1 is addictive though, hardly any visibility, cars everywhere, frequent wrecks, dodging wall bouncers, I think I hold my breath from T1 until after the hairpin :lol: Adrenaline rush every time! And then it was raining this morning, very disappointed my car still behaved exactly the same.

Next update snow at Tokyo!

I saw @NosOsH, good driving with you. What an ugly race though. First I get a 4 sec penalty from a car unghosting inside my car after he bounced off the wall. The ghost intersecting apparently counted as contact as after he drove out of me he tapped a wall and I got 4 seconds penalty :banghead:

Then there's this dude that keeps bumping me from behind, bumped me into the wall at T1 with a dive 'pass' and on his 4th SR Down tap delivered me a 5 sec wall penalty. I slowed him down good, he had no chance of bothering you anymore @NosOsH :) Down to SR.A for that, worth it, since he's not there in the SR.A lobby. Only way to get rid of these people.

The McLaren BMW is a serious contender for the Ford GT. Now I've got a handle on it, I got a faster lap in it that with the Ford. It's still a bit less stable but that extra acceleration makes it easier to catch the draft and launch forward. Another fastest lap and second place finish despite this:

PD, just give me a penalty for entering the race, I know you want to.

I understand now how the ranking works better- and B is definitely a good place to be. I didn't realize how much smaller the point margins are in D and C. The racing is sooooo much better in B. I'm still barely in there at about 11,000, but my consistency is better so I'm not losing 2000 points for a bad race anymore. At least, not as often. :lol: It helps that I only have time for a couple races a night.

The mountain with the Huracan is a blast, but I'm spoiled by AWD and have lost my throttle finesse for RWD. Hot lapping in the Aston put my backward a few times. Granted- Panorama is a difficult circuit for RWD anyway, but I'd really like to master it.
