All this talk and personal experiences on track about the Gr4 M4 finally made me decide to buy one and see for myself how it did at Suzuka.
The first surprise was that I was doing short shifting practice in qualifying and just like that, ran just under 2:08. When it came to race it, had the usual intense pressure while leading but the competition eventually peeled off to pit. That victory was, as Mika Hakkinen would put it, "Oh yeah, it was so easy. I can't believe it."
I could've just sat there and piled up a boatload of wins all day but instead, I stuck with my Gulf Vantage because that wouldn't be fair. Of course, that didn't stop others from trying. One last race, I did the unthinkable and was catching up to a fuel miser on the final lap approaching 130R. I had to plan the move right because the rate of speed was great. Well, I timed it wrong, bumped the guy on the exit and spun myself out. At least I knew you it could be done under the right circumstances.
A bit of a side note but also on that last race, I switched my view from bumper to hood as an experiment relating to the throttle matter. I never could get the handle of hood view in prior Gran Turismos but strangely, I was able to match my best times in qualifying and maintained my usual pace in race trim. Dare I say I was even a little more consistent hitting my marks overall. I need to try this with other cars and events.
