I love my wheel, but I lost almost 20,000DR in the few weeks after I had it. It's not an instant fix or a cure-all.

Yep, I dropped from DR A to C after permanently switching. Before that, I switched back and forth. I regret that. Once you switch, keep at it and not fall into the trap of returning to the DS4 because you're faster.

A wheel is one of the best gaming purchases I ever made, no regrets at all.

So another day, another set of race C to have crack at and today in the basement rank is a bit more positive at least. Today's theme seems to be folks forgetting to use mandatory tires for whatever reason. Not that I am complaining I like free places so I hope the trend continues.

One even got me a third place after crossing the line in 5th having started in 12th. That was a decent race apart from one German driver who pit manoeuvred someone in the last corner of lap 11 which slowed him down enough for me to overtake on the outside but he turned into me and put me into the barrier. He shot into the pits with a 4 second penalty I lost a place but managed to fight back for the 5th on the line (and 3rd overall).

Some people use their wheel more than I do, but I don't regret buying a wheel either. If we're asking when do you hit a limit on the DS4, you hit your limit. I spent over a year on a DS4 & only racked up 15 daily race wins. I thought, "Is this as good as I can drive?" I bought the wheel that I'm still using & in just about 14 months on it I've won 45 races. Not saying that the wheel is the big difference, but I can operate the pedals better under certain circumstances better than the buttons on the DS4. I tried to switch my brain to using the shoulder buttons for throttle/brake, but it never stuck.

Maybe I should get a wheel then... Or maybe this is as fast as I can drive

I feel like a wheel significantly contributes to enjoyment, and smoothness/tyre wear. It's much more rewarding to drive. As we all know, people can be very fast with controller, but I have struggled a lot with it, as it's difficult to get used to and the wheel just feels so much more natural to use.
Bear in mind that @NevilleNobody is probably faster than me on some combos, at least equal to me. It all comes down more to experience and speed.
@Matrix243123 don't worry about it, I've been scrolling back and is this your main question?

If so, beat @GOTMAXPOWER in a straight fight. He's damn fast on a controller, and your QT is faster than mine on a wheel. I believe you think it's a 'problem' because you keep finishing in low places. The fact is, you're probably getting matched with people who are faster than you. What region are you in? I'm about the same pace as you and I regularly compete for podiums and top 5s this week.
The thing with Sport Mode is that you are matched with only a fraction of the population. If you finish 19th in a race, that doesn't mean you are slow. it simply means everyone in the lobby is faster than you.
I suggest you start using the website kudosprime.com, as it gives you a complete breakdown of you statistics as a driver. You are not slow. If your pace is similar to mine, you are in the top 4% of drivers. Remember, there are almost 200,000 active players in Sport Mode.
DM me or @Pigems or @roamingbard13 if you have any questions about kudosprime, we would be happy to help you learn how to use it.

I've never been 1.8s from the top time in my region (canada/us), so I assumed I'd fair well. Not so. Just making sure I'm not missing something that would make it easier. Busted my @$$ practicing and got broken to pieces in the race 1st 4 laps. I think you're correct in that I was lumped in with some top tier drivers all in the 1:29s. Ever since I went from BA back to BS rating. Been on kudo for awhile, lots of specs to it. That's yours? Thanks for the info.

Wheel vs DS4 probably depends most on how conditioned the car driver is to the wheel.

I think it's similar to typing. Qwerty vs thumbs. Some can type novels on a phone. Some are conditioned to need a desk set up. Both get the job done. Probably best to know both as you can probably learn something from the other.

I use a DS4 and just immerse myself in the game, by envisioning how real world racers drive. I've mentioned plenty of times, my limiting factor is blood loss. Seems to depend on circuit. Concentration, adrenaline/grip of the controller, long loaded corners, constant corners one after the other, no acceleration breaks, tyre wear multiplier, comfort zone of the players around me and even the circuits I like or dislike, contribute to my right trigger finger losing blood and tendons feeling sore. A wheel would eliminate that.

Adding to how KiepeYe recoups, at times, I have to shake my hand during straights.

I don't miss that stress on my hands from long hours of racing. I still use the controller on other games, but the wheel was bought specifically for GT Sport. I use it on PCars2 as well.

And here I am.. I write with a pencil.
Although in technical school I learned to disassemble and reassemble a typewriter!

Thats another factor I forgot to mention. Severe hand strain when the competition gets tight, and can lead to mistakes. Usually gets lighter as the field spreads out but didn't this last race.

Depends on buttons used too. When I used X square my thumb was red and sore, triggers are a little better although you get cramps.

Sorry for taking so long to respond. ;)

<... snip...>

<...snip..> is because I don't want to blow through my DR that I worked hard for.

Any comments?

@Matrix243123,

Good news!
  • Controller is fine.
  • Race pace is fine.
  • QT times are amazing.

I have been able to diagnose the problem... the latin name for it is DR-avoid-itis. It is specific to GTS players and is an irrational ailment that causes one to focus on an unimportant metric at the cost of fun and enjoyment.

On your poor race experience it is just butterflies. You are nervous that's all. I lose DR every Monday... my first races are a wreck. I get better and that is how I get better... by simply *doing*... DR.2000 is my cost of admission. For that I get to have fun. The worst case scenario is that you will get sent down a split and qual in P1 or P2 and actually get to win a race.

Just be glad you do not have the much worse affliction of DR-tank-itis - the purposeful losing of points to achieve undeserved wins amongst lower splits. I don't take those sort of patients any longer... for some there is no hope. :(

Seriously, good luck and let us know how it goes.

EDIT: BTW, I suffer from DR-avoid-itis and fight it every day.

Tbh IMHO the biggest difference between wheel and controller is immersion. And tire preservation through consistency.
@GOTMAXPOWER is on a controller, not many here can best him for speed.
I'm not fast, you must be confusing me with somebody else 👍 The leaderboards are dominated by wheels so there is a small pace advantage there but the very best pad player ( @GT5Power ) can still get top spot on the leaderboards.

The tyre wear is a big difference when the multipliers are high, Womble did a video on it a couple of weeks ago and got 25% more wear:

I get reset and play a few games, get back to about 8K and about 60 and I get a game of bumper cars and get reset again. Didn't quite get reset that time sitting on SR16, but this is just stupid I can't get to S unless I give up DR and once I get to S I'll be playing against As and Bs so getting DR back gets so much harder. I'd be better off trying to keep a C/B rating as that would be fairly simple.

I always get you confused with that @GOTNOBRAKES fella, he’s the fast one. ;)

Is it possible to get a half second penalty and an orange Sr down symbol if you go into the pits at full speed?

This is the first time I've ever done a race with a pit stop online. I've never considered myself good enough to manage it.

In custom races offline I fly into the pits at high speeds because there are no consequences, like there are in PC2.

BTW, thank you guys for your input on getting me prepared for the Interlagos longer race.

My results would not impress any of you but it was a pleasant surprise for me.

Moved up five places this last race and moved up four places the race before. Both were clean and exciting

I suppose it's possible I did graze a wall but didn't feel it.

But, the problem wasn't coming in at full speed, correct?

Is a good point. And is really my only option. I'll have to be the Mr.Rogers of racing and let them go by and wave when I don't have pace.

No not a speed issue, maybe you crossed the lines???

Just had a great race, in a hard race C with 10+ As and Bs and I figured a top 10 would get me back to B. Well start mucks up everyone is reversing and all over the track. I get into 6th, I was lucky I was going the right way, so everyone is driving angry and I need a cleanish race so I defend but not overly aggressive. I got knocked off track 4 times, but managed to stay calm and just drive sensibly. About 3 laps to go I'm 10th and happy, then 9th quits and 12th lap 7 and 8 are fighting I pass them so grab 7th and surprisingly a CRB. How you could call it clean when at least 10 players hit me? I also did tap a guy, but that was fine too.

@Norrin Radd That sounds like a race I'd love to see!

You were rewarded for your patience and for being consistent. I'm impressed you held it together after being pushed off road 4 times.

Do you recall if the offenders were penalized?

You don't happen to have that replay, do you?
