Myself - I am lately getting penalties but its typically when I try to overtake and I am not clearly in front. The problem for me is that if I try to avoid every car all the time ... it ends up not feeling like I am racing. I want to be clean though, so I am paying more attention to my penalties. Having a reasonable qualifying time also helps, because the further to the front you are the lower the probability of something happening.
Also pay heaps of attention to the first corner. Where is the safest place to be?
I try not to pass at the first corner, it's tricky and conducive to contact. Instead i use the Aston, which is a beast on the straights, and focus on getting on the gas as early as i can OUT of the S curves. This allows a pass into Turn 3, the awkward left hander, but you can pass either on the inside or outside at that turn and avoid contact, especially useful on the inside as you can hold the line into the next series of corners.
